Jeffery’s POV
I walked over to Cindy the next day in school, she looks okay and I knew by her expression that the emergency that had made her leave my house was resolved. “Cindy,” I called out and she turned to me.
“Oh Jeffery, good to see you, I left my phone at your place yesterday, did you happen to see it?” I nod to her question and hands it over to her, she smiles and thanked me, but I just stare at her intensely.
“Cindy, I happened to go through your pictures,” I said honestly and she looked up at me. “The man with you in that picture, who is he?” I asked her and a part of me wishes she would say it is someone else and not her father, a part of me want it to be someone she is not related to.
“Oh, that’s my father.” She said with a smile on her lips. “Marcus White, he is very handsome isn’t he?” She showed me another picture of him, but I couldn’t return the smile.
My heart was torn into pieces at this moment, I looked down at her phone, at the man who I had met, the man who my mother loves and I had accepted him to be her husband since I also want her to be happy.
“Is he the one remarrying?” I asked her and my question even made me laugh, he was the man I met and no magic could change that.
“Yes.” Cindy beams.
She must be so happy to know her father is getting married, she had longed for a mother and she had said all she wishes to do when she finally has one.
I exhaled sharply and nod my head, it was sad to know that this was all the truth, to wake up in this reality, I want my mother to be happy and Cindy also has to be happy, my mother love Cindy’s father and Cindy loves my mother to be her stepmother.
“I will be in class.” My mood was not so good anymore and I didn’t want to continue this conversation, I also don’t want Cindy to see the sadness in my expression, I turned to leave but she held my wrist.
“I will meet your mother today.” Her voice was low and I know she was not too glad that she ran off without meeting her, now my heartfelt crushed.
What would have been their expression that night? I had told my mother that I was waiting with my girlfriend at home, how sad will the two of them be.
I closed my eyes momentarily to stop the tears that were lingering, I knew this all wouldn’t go down well, I was worn out from all the thinking and also didn’t want Cindy to see me this way.
I looked at her after making sure I put on a smiling face. “She is very busy today, you probably won’t meet her.”
“Oh, I wish things haven’t gone that way last night.” She muttered and I was glad that things had happened that way. “Umm… maybe you can show me a picture of her.” Her eyes were filled with a glint as she looked at me.
I am so sorry Cindy.
I apologize in my head, she was too happy for me to act this way, now it seems there is a lot of things that don’t want us to be together, still, I want to hold on to her.
“I don’t have a picture of her on my phone.” Cindy looked at me sceptically and I know she must think of me as a liar, but I don’t want to ruin her happy mood, not now. “My mother is very busy, and you can’t meet her.”
Saying this I watched Cindy’s expression changed, but I couldn’t tell her the truth, I walked away before she could say any other thing, my heart was aching, I only had to speak with my mother, if I can’t convince her, then I will have no other choice…
I was disoriented all through the day that I lost focus on lectures, when I got home, my mother was already back so I walked over to her, sat on the chair opposite her and stare at her face.
She was going through so file on her laptop and she was looking so happy and her skin seems to glow recently, could be because of her newfound lover.
"Why are you staring at me that way Jeffery?" My mother asked and I was snapped out of my trance. "Is there something on my face?" She touched her face and I shook my head.
"Then what is wrong?" She put her laptop aside, seeing that my expression was a sad one.
I exhaled softly, not knowing how to put the words, my heart was sore and the weight seems unbearable, but I know I still need to say something.
I sat up straight and looked at my mother's curious face. "Mom, must you love that man?"
She raised her brown and her eyes seem to stare at me intensely. "What are you saying, Jeffrey?"
"Why must it be Marcus, out of all men out there?" I was too said that I had to speak before I think.
"That is because I love him and he makes me smile." She responds, but she looks puzzled that I would ask such questions.
"Mom, can't you stop it now." I bite down my lips, trying hard not to show my tears, but they still roll down my cheeks. I knew saying this would hurt my mother, but I was hurting more, if my mother goes to Marcus, I will have to lose Condy and she is the only girl I have loved.
"Jeffery," She looks at my face with a puzzled expression. "I don't know why you are like this, but my heart can't stop." She looked at me with a sad expression too. "Jeffery, you had accepted him too." Her voice was hoarse.
I closed my eyes and I could feel my lips tremble, accepting him was a mistake. "I have done that without knowing what I have to lose." I rub my hands on my forehead and look at my mother.
"Jeffrey, I don't understand you..." My mother's voice came out like a whisper.
I pressed down my lips, one thing I didn't want to do was make my mother sad, and right now am doing it, she had suffered a lot in the past and accepting a man that loves her and makes her happy should be the gift I give to her.
I sniffle and wipe off my tears. "If he makes you happy and if you love him so much, then go to him, if you won't let go, then I have no choice but to." I forced a smile and left the house.
I called Cindy out and gave her the address, she arrived immediately since she was close.
"Jeffery!" She called out and waved ate as she walked close to the table I sat, she was beaming and her face glow, just a few days we had started dating and now...
"One, two, three, four..." I counted as she sat down and looked at me confused to see me counting.
"Jeffery, what is wrong?" She raised her brow and her eyes bored into mine.
"Nine, ten..." I look at her face and my lips moved. "Let's break up Cindy."
