Shen Heyu quietly looked at Pei Yansi for three seconds before finally saying just one sentence, "Let’s wait for Zhao Jin to arrive and hear what he has to say."
Pei Yansi furrowed his brow and stood up, looking seriously at Shen Heyu’s face, he asked, "Don’t you trust me?"
"I only trust evidence."
"Then tell me, the evidence that you came here today to question me about, the incident when I went to that abandoned factory to rescue you, do you have any evidence to suggest it was all staged by me?" Pei Yansi had never done such a thing, and he wanted to see what evidence the real perpetrator could fabricate to slander him.
Shen Heyu took out the two files that Lu Yi had sent to her, and after Pei Yansi looked at them, he just scoffed.
"So on the strength of these, you come to doubt me, Shen Heyu—I didn’t expect to be held in such a low regard in your heart."
Pei Yansi was truly hurt. Shen Heyu didn’t seem to be someone without brains; fabricating such evidence would be too easy, requiring no effort at all.
"These pieces of evidence don’t have any real persuasive power. The real reason you doubt me is that Lu Yi told you about this, right? Do you trust him that much?"
Pei Yansi felt as if an arrow had struck his knee. He loved Shen Heyu so much, more than his own life, but in the end, he weighed less in her heart than a man who had been by her side for just a few months.
"That’s right, I do trust him. Are you satisfied with that answer?" Shen Heyu looked Pei Yansi in the eyes as she answered straightforwardly, his hands clenching involuntarily at his sides.
Pei Yansi mocked himself with a twist of his mouth, tossing his phone onto the bed, and he looked at Shen Heyu with no confidence.
"Do you think I’m the kind of person who would joke with your life just to keep you by my side?"
Pei Yansi would indeed go to any length to keep Shen Heyu by his side, but he would not stoop to such despicable, lowly tactics or gamble with her life.
Shen Heyu didn’t answer.
Her silence made Pei Yansi feel even worse. He felt as if he was suffocating, like he was in a vacuum.
"It seems you really think that way, but let me tell you, even if Zhao Jin hasn’t arrived yet to clear things up, I didn’t do this, and I would never make a joke out of your life."
Pei Yansi enunciated every word very clearly, and Shen Heyu’s eyes flickered slightly.
Actually, she also believed Pei Yansi was not such a despicable and shameless person, but Lu Yi’s words had indeed shaken her.
"I do want to go to any length to keep you by my side, but I would never gamble with your life. You just need to remember that. I don’t know where Lu Yi got that evidence, but I think the person you should be questioning is not me, but him."
Pei Yansi had never considered Lu Yi a rival, dismissing him as nothing more than a forgettable background to Shen Heyu, but today’s incident had served as a wake-up call; Lu Yi’s reaction was very off. It seemed he would have to keep a closer eye on him in the future.
"Why should I suspect Lu Yi? He has treated me well, and I’m quite clear on what kind of person he is. Don’t try to turn the tables on him here."
Shen Heyu had indeed never doubted Lu Yi. Even if she didn’t believe the words he said, she merely questioned the reliability of the evidence he presented.
"Heyu, your blind trust in others will one day kill you, corner you into a dead end," Yansi coldly warned Heyu not to trust someone so easily, especially a man who had circled around her for so long.
Heyu’s eyes suddenly turned colder, "Rest assured, I’ll remember what you’ve said today."
Zhao Jin’s timing couldn’t have been worse; just as he knocked and pushed the door open, he discovered Heyu and Yansi in the midst of an argument, with Yansi’s brows tightly furrowed in anger.
His heart leapt to his throat, not knowing whether to enter or retreat.
He had wanted to keep as low a profile as possible, but at the very moment he opened the door, Yansi and Heyu turned their heads to look at him as if by some unspoken understanding.
His heart felt anxious under their gazes, and even his breathing became hesitant and guarded.
"You’re here," Yansi said coldly, breaking the tension. Zhao Jin felt a prickling sensation on his scalp as he lowered his head and entered the hospital room.
Cautiously, he glanced at Heyu’s displeased expression, greeted her gently, and then got to the matter at hand, "President, I’ve investigated the matter you asked me about."
"Well, what are you waiting for? Tell Heyu the truth right now."
Yansi shot an impatient look at him, making Zhao Jin feel as though he had been metaphorically slashed.
Zhao Jin turned back to Heyu and with a respectful nod and smile, "Miss Shen, I’ve thoroughly looked into your kidnapping from a few days ago, but before I reveal the findings, please prepare yourself mentally."
Hearing his friendly warning, Heyu couldn’t help but frown, "What do you mean by that?"
Heyu quickly understood what Zhao Jin implied.
He glanced back at Yansi, whose irritation seemed to deepen with that look.
"What are you looking at me for? Hurry up and tell her what you found," Yansi snapped.
After taking a deep breath and carefully considering his words, Zhao Jin finally spoke, "Miss Shen, the result of my investigation is that behind the scenes of your abduction at the abandoned factory was Lu Yi."
When Zhao Jin had reminded her to brace herself, a flurry of scenarios had raced through Heyu’s mind, but she had never imagined that the name he would reveal was Lu Yi.
"That’s impossible, there’s absolutely no way Lu Yi did this," Heyu retorted emotionally, just a second after hearing Zhao Jin’s words.
Upon hearing Heyu’s rebuttal, Yansi raised an eyebrow disapprovingly, took a step closer to Heyu, and challenged her with a cold voice, "You’d rather believe that I orchestrated this whole thing than think that Lu Yi did it and is framing me?"
"I’ve just told you, I know what kind of person Lu Yi is. He would never do something , stop slinging mud at him, I’m so naive to have stood here waiting idiotically for you to tell me the truth."
Heyu showed an expression of disillusionment as she looked at Yansi.
She turned to leave, but Yansi grabbed her wrist in one quick move.
"So in your heart, his credibility is higher than mine?"
