Shen Heyu indeed had that intention.
However, she didn’t plan to explain the purpose of her visit to Pei Yansi so soon. She was worried that Pei Yansi’s emotional outbursts could exacerbate his injury.
Shen Heyu had seen the wound on Pei Yansi’s abdomen with her own eyes. It was deep, and if it tore open again, it could easily become inflamed. So Shen Heyu had to be careful.
"The doctor said you might have to stay in the hospital for a month or two. Do you find it hard to suddenly have so much idle time, being the busy person that you are?" Shen Heyu took a small sip of soda water and looked up into Pei Yansi’s eyes.
From the moment Shen Heyu walked into the ward, Pei Yansi’s gaze had been fixed on her.
"It is indeed unpleasant to suddenly have nothing to do. However, if you’re willing to visit me in the hospital more often, I guess I wouldn’t mind," said Pei Yansi.
Shen Heyu lightly set down the cup in her hand.
"But if you’re unwilling, I won’t force you."
Pei Yansi could tell that Shen Heyu was preoccupied with something, though he didn’t yet know what it was. However, he didn’t ask directly.
"Pei Yansi," Shen Heyu called his name with a heavy voice, her brow furrowing slightly.
Yet Pei Yansi responded quite naturally, "What’s wrong? I’ve been staying in the hospital these past few days. Surely I haven’t had the opportunity to anger you, have I?"
Shen Heyu took a deep breath. She didn’t want to agitate a patient, but the words Lu Yi said echoed incessantly by her ear, like a devil’s whisper.
"Do you still remember that Lu Yi and I are already married? We’ve made our situation very clear and agreed to act like strangers from now on. But today, you make me feel as if none of that ever happened."
Lu Yi had told Shen Heyu that Pei Yansi’s previous solitary venture to the abandoned factory to save her was entirely staged—a claim Shen Heyu did not believe.
But then Lu Yi presented Shen Heyu with something she couldn’t refute: he claimed that Pei Yansi was the kind of man who would stop at nothing to get her.
Take, for instance, the recent event. Pei Yansi had already promised to distance himself from her and make a clean break. Logically, they should have proceeded as strangers to each other thereafter.
However, things did not unfold as planned. Pei Yansi continued to appear in Shen Heyu’s life just as before.
Despite having spoken such definitive and cutting words, leaving no room for sentiment, Pei Yansi’s demeanor towards Shen Heyu was as if they were the same as before any of it happened—as if those harsh words were merely bubbles.
Shen Heyu didn’t want to believe the evidence Lu Yi presented. Yet, when he brought up this matter, she found herself at a loss for words.
She couldn’t believe that Pei Yansi would act so crazily, staging such a drama to keep her tied to him.
But what if Pei Yansi had been spurred by something and, in hopes of keeping her by his side, had committed such an insane act?
It didn’t seem completely far-fetched.
Thus, Shen Heyu didn’t continue to argue with Lu Yi and instead sought out Pei Yansi. She wanted to hear the truth about that day from him.
When Shen Heyu brought up the matter to remind Pei Yansi, his expression indeed changed subtly.
"Did you come today to remind me of this matter?"
"Yes. But even if I remind you, will you take it seriously? Will you truly fulfill the promises you made to me?" Shen Heyu’s hand, resting on her knee, involuntarily clenched into a fist.
"No," Pei Yansi flatly denied.
Shen Heyu’s heart finally sank to the bottom.
"Why? Haven’t you promised me? Why do you go back on your word over and over again? Have you ever truly honored your promise to me?" Shen Heyu’s eyes trembled fiercely.
She couldn’t believe Pei Yansi was that kind of person, but at this moment, her heart actually began to waver.
She closed her eyes in disappointment, and when she opened them again, she met Pei Yansi’s excessively sharp gaze.
"Because I love you, I simply can’t bear the consequences of losing you, so I will never let anyone take you away," Pei Yansi said seriously as he looked at Shen Heyu.
"In order to keep me by your side, you would resort to any means and pay any price, right?" Shen Heyu’s heart started trembling with panic, fearing she would hear the answer she dreaded.
Shen Heyu’s nails dug into the palm of her hand in an instant; her mind was exceptionally clear at this moment. The words Lu Yi had said were like a tightening curse, giving her a headache.
"Pei Yansi, you can’t do this!"
"You tell me what I can’t do. As long as I can keep you by my side, what does it matter if I do something outrageous?"
Pei Yansi counterquestioned Shen Heyu. The love he had for Shen Heyu was obsessive and firm; no one could become a stumbling block between him and his Shen Heyu.
Shen Heyu’s breath hitched, "In order to keep me by your side, to change my mind, you went so far as to stage an entire play, even betting both my life and your own?"
Pei Yansi couldn’t understand what Shen Heyu was saying.
"What are you talking about?"
"I’m talking about the incident a few days ago, the one at the abandoned factory where you came to rescue me. What’s the truth behind that? I hope you can tell me the truth today," Shen Heyu clenched her fists.
She silently swore in her heart that if even one word Pei Yansi told her today was false, she would never be soft-hearted toward Pei Yansi again.
"The incident a few days ago where I went to the plane factory to save you, don’t you know everything already? Why are you asking me?" Pei Yansi felt that today’s Shen Heyu was very strange.
"Do I know the whole truth?" Shen Heyu still doubted Pei Yansi.
Pei Yansi’s brows furrowed with caution, "What do you mean by that? There’s more to your abduction, and you suspect me?"
"I didn’t say I suspect you. I’m just asking if you know something that I don’t," Shen Heyu did not admit it.
Pei Yansi looked into Shen Heyu’s eyes and called Zhao Jin in front of her, "I had already asked you to investigate Shen Heyu’s abduction two days ago. How come there’s been no news from your side after two days?"
"President, I’ve already investigated everything clearly, but the doctor said you must maintain a stable mood these past few days. I was worried that hearing about this would upset you, so I didn’t immediately report it."
"Who told you to decide not to report? Come to my ward now and clarify everything face to face."
Pei Yansi hung up the phone after finishing speaking and looked up at Shen Heyu’s eyes which wavered slightly.
"I don’t know if you’ve heard some rumors, but these past two days I’ve been recovering and indeed have not yet heard the details of your abduction."
