Olivia's pov:
After failing to get Jack's attention with the loud clearing of my throat, I got a bit intrigued by his focus to his own thoughts. His head was raised up into the sky with his eyes scanning the twinkling stars.
I really wanted to know what was going through his mind. It was killing me! Was he thinking about me or something totally random? I gave a tap on his shoulder to which he reacted, and I was finally able to get his attention.
He slowly turned his eyes towards me. They glistened under the moonlight.
"Is everything alright?" I asked while trying to adjust my hair as it was blowing along with the wind blowing from the sea.
"Yeah, it is..." he answered my simple question straight to the point.
I was hoping for a super detailed response but unlucky me of course could not get one that easily. I guess I would have to work for it.
I sighed and looked at the night sky which was filled with twinkling stars. My entire self was sucked into the beauty of it. A few minutes later, I remembered my curiosity for Jack's thoughts about me.
"Life's so weird right?" I questioned with a smile while adjusting my hair again.
He partially turned his face towards me, narrowing his eyebrows while he sighed.
I continued after a pause, "One day, you are the happiest person in the world but then the next, you are turn out to be the most miserable person on the planet!"
"That's the exact thing that's happening to me, unfortunately! I came to LA with a happy and enthusiastic attitude, thinking I was going to have the time of my life! Meet new amazing people and just live the LA dream! But after a few days, everything started to fall apart! It became a full nightmare for me!"
"I don't know what went wrong or what I did wrong, but I started witnessing the dark side of life all at once with the snap of a finger! I still am not able to process all of that!"
I looked at Jack who was listening to me carefully. I wanted to mention my family's murder, but I could not bring myself to do so for some reason.
I was quite emotional, and something was holding me back from mentioning it, so I gave up on that. I also did not know how to convey such a disturbing news to anyone anymore! It only caused me more pain than ever.
Jack looked extremely confused and obviously did not know what dark phases I was talking about.
"Ok so, I will get straight to the point!"
I hesitated for some time, but I wanted to know! I wanted to know if Jack despises me, the same way Sam and Jessica do! I could not take the wait any longer! It was killing me from within.
My lungs were desperate for air, my heart was racing, and blood was gushing through my veins. I felt so stressed that I could feel the adrenaline pumping in me.
I inhaled some air to calm me down. Mini meditations always help you clear your mind! That was what my mother used to teach me.
Her way of life was simple! Whenever any bad situation would arise, she would always sit down, take a deep breath and process the entire situation to come up with a solution.
I got inspired by my mom's teachings, so I decided to take a deep breath and ask Jack the question once and for all.
"Jack do you-" I was suddenly cut short by Jack's ringing phone.
"Olivia, hold on, let me take this call! I will be back." he said before walking away towards his room.
I felt devastated. I wanted to know how he felt about me so bad and god knows who called him and interrupted me.
Ah! Why nothing was going right with me? Was I destined for failure? I never understood what the universe wanted from me. I was tired of facing a problem and never ending up with a solution.
Filled with anger and emotion, I hugged myself as I remembered the past situations again. It was as if they will haunt me for life! I felt as if I would never escape them. They tied me up in chains and would never let me go.
It felt like they were stuck within me like a poison that was slowly killing me.
Just then, I heard a few sandy footsteps approaching me. I was expecting to see Jack returning from his phone call but when I titled me head up, I got shocked to see Sam wearing plain black shirt and grey sweatpants, approaching the rock I was sitting on.
But what was he doing here?
I gulped at the sight of him. I was hoping that he did not see me with Jack earlier or else some new problem would have arisen.
I decided to ignore him and continue to stare at the dark void far at sea. The wind blew the loose strands of my hair and provided a cool feel to my body.
I got super tensed though when Sam walked past me and took a seat on Jack's spot on the rock. I shifted a little towards the opposite end to avoid touching him.
"What are you doing here? Sitting all alone on a rock at the beach?" he asked with his deep voice.
"None of your business!" I gave a snarky reply.
I could not take it anymore!! I was very uncomfortable to be around him. I knew he did not care one bit about me, but he always seemed to find his way near me.
It was as if I was a magnet attracting him. He just would not stop!
He lowered his head and after collecting himself, he opened his mouth to say something completely unexpected! The word "Sorry!" came out of his mouth which made my jaw drop to the sand!
I squinted and immediately turned towards him, looking at a neutral expression on his face.
"Sorry? For what?" I questioned firmly with a teary eye.
"For annoying you earlier when we were stuck at that place." he responded with no emotions whatsoever.
I was taken aback by his response. He really had the audacity to say that. Did he forget about everything else? Did he not want to apologize for all the stuff he put me through?
I got so angry and annoyed! I wanted to say something so bad. I felt choked whenever I tried to suppress what I wanted to say.
But at that point, I knew I could not hold back then. I knew I had to say what I had to say. It would make me feel a little bit calm and relaxed!
With that being said, for my piece of mind, I got up from the cold hard rock and stood in front of Sam.
I collected myself and began speaking, making myself as clear as I could to get my message across.
"So, you won't apologize for the other things you did to me? For the things you did to me in LA?"
He raised his head and looked at me with a guilty look on his face, but he said absolutely nothing!
I continued despite his silence, "Do you even realize how badly you hurt me? Sam?"
"Of course, you would not! Why would you? I'm nothing to you right?" I began to get a bit hysterical.
I could tell he was uneasy when I was questioning him, but he did not utter a single word and instead kept on listening.
"You know, the day you asked me to come to meet you, I was the happiest girl in the world! In fact, I was over the moon to finally get the opportunity to meet you! The person who I admired for years! Never in my wildest dreams did I think you would betray me, the way you did!"
"The worst part of it all was that you gave no reasoning for your behavior! Do you even know how suffocated I felt when you and Jessica cut ties with me for no reason? But I know there is something up!"
"I know there must be something that you are hiding from me!"
When I said that, Sam sprang from the rock and stood in front of me, silent. As the waves of the sea began to subside, an eerie silence filled the air. I looked at him in his eyes in silence.
"Tell me the reason!" I demanded while trying to stop the tears from flowing out of my eyes.
Sam began to fidget with his hands. This confirmed that something went wrong. He was hiding something from me! If he only would come clean and let me know. It would have made my life easier.
Even after pouring my heart out, Sam decided to stay as quiet as possible. He refused to open his sealed mouth!
As I stood silently before him crying, he finally came up to me and whispered, "Goodnight!" and left the beach.
I could not help but break down. I could not fathom how heartless he was.
I sat on the rock, feeling lonely and continued to sob.
I remembered my dad's words of how the world was unfair. Even the closest people who you love and admire the most are capable of betraying you.
I never paid heed to that statement as I never experienced such a thing before in life.
And now that I finally did, I had to experience it alone, without the comfort of my family.
Just then, I noticed Jack had returned after attending his phone call. He looked worried to see my face covered in tear stains.
Usually, I would have stopped and suppressed my tears but this time, I could not! I kept on crying in front of Jack!
He came up to me and did the most unexpected thing!
He gave me a hug!
I was very confused but one thing for sure was that Jack was unlike Sam.
He was more caring and understanding. I guess! I hope I was not wrong. I hope I did not mistake him to be a friend like Sam. I did not want to make the same mistake as before!
A few minutes later, Jack dropped me off to my room. It was a silent walk back. All we could hear were the crickets.
I realized that Jack did not even get the chance to hear my question! Was it destined that he should not know? I really did not know what was going on.
I threw my body on the bed and closed my eyes shut.
