Dark Deception Chapter 19

Inspector Gaikwad's pov: I was sitting in my office underneath my fan that was rotating ever so screechy. My head was in knots as I was flipping through file after file trying to get more information on this murderer. I knew it was not going to be easy to catch him! It was a professional killer. I got up from my chair feeling very frustrated. I went up to the coffee machine to get a cup of coffee to fuel me up as I didn't get that much sleep the previous night while studying this case. I couldn't waste any time at all in this case. As I was sipping my coffee, I massaged my forehead with my other hand to loosen up the tension belt on it. My mind could not take it as I was sitting down with the files for long hours straight. I realized that I could not work with so much stress and frustration, so I thought to just sit down with my coffee and calm down. I needed to unwind for a bit. As I was down to my last sip of my dark black coffee, I got up and went towards the evidence room to try and see what I could find. The room was so silent as I was the only one there. My footsteps filled the eerie silence of the room. The hollowness of the room intensified them. I took the box that contained the ring of the murderer. I narrowed my eyes, trying to examine the ring more. The ring felt cold and a strange sense to it. I think it was due to the fact that it belonged to someone who took away so many lives. As I was looking super closely at the ring, I found a tiny writing at the bottom of the ring. I was very curious to know what that was! Maybe it could help with the investigation. I quickly put on my light blue gloves to avoid getting fingerprints on the ring and carefully lifted it out of the box. My hands were shaking as I tried to hold it carefully and not drop it on the floor. The diamond on the top sparkled when I put it in front of the bright white light. It looked very beautiful and expensive. That guy must have spent a fortune on this only to lose it. I squinted at the tiny writing, trying to understand what was written there. The writing was in a cursive writing which made it even more difficult to look at plain sight. After a few minutes of straining my eyes at it, I was finally able to read the writing while my eyes started hurting a bit. "LA jewellers" that's all that was engraved in Melanie font on the gold band. I sighed and was very relieved to have found something. This name was extremely crucial, and it was the only lead I got. Right then, I closed my eyes for a bit as they were still aching from squinting a lot. With my eyes still closed, I suddenly heard some faint footsteps replacing the heavy silence of the room. With every second, the footsteps grew louder and louder. Someone was here. My heart started pounding in a flash, who could be here? I gulped the saliva that collected in my mouth and slowly opened my eyes. As I opened my eyes, I saw a man covered in a black mask, wearing a black jacket, a pair of black pants and black boots. The light from the light bulb fell on him, illuminating him and he had a gun pointed to my face with his finger close to the trigger. My eyes popped out at the glance of the gun to my face. I was in a horrible position! I did not expect such an encounter, so I did not have my own gun at hand as I left at my office desk. Slowly I turned my face towards him and his gun. He gave a gesture for me to place my hands in the air slowly. The way he motioned his hands felt eerie. After a moment of hesitation, I complied out of helplessness. No one was present in this area of the station, so it was useless to scream or resist. It would only lead me into more and more problems. The intruder had his finger which was covered in black leather gloves, straight on the trigger and he did not look hesitant to pull it. His eyes were soulless. "Now slowly put the ring on the table" he ordered me in his deep dense voice. I obeyed and kept the ring on the table as carefully as I could. As soon as I put the ring down, he grabbed it and continued to hold me at gun point. In my mind, I knew I could not let him get away with the only piece of evidence we had left to find the murderer of Olivia's family. But my face looked completely blank. Drops of sweat covering my forehead fell on my nose. He placed a pair of handcuffs that he pulled out from his pocket and kept it on the table in a calm manner. "Cuff yourself! Slowly!" he ordered and this time in a harsher manner. I complied and cuffed my hands at the front. I felt completely useless at this point. But I was still determined to devise a plan to get me out of this situation. He started moving backwards but with his face and gun still pointed at my face. As soon as he got towards the door of the room, the next thing I heard was a silent gunshot. It lasted for a quick second. I felt a sharp pain! I gasped and lowered my head towards my stomach, to find my white shirt soaked in blood. Blood! The intruder left the room while shutting the door behind me, leaving me all alone, wounded! I fell on the floor and the blood continued to pour out of my body onto the marbled floor. I knew I was shot but I could not give up that easily. Luckily the wound was not too bad that I would die instantly. But I knew that I needed help! With my body still on the floor, I slowly pushed myself towards the table that contained my phone at the edge. Each time I pushed my body towards the table, the pain in my abdomen area intensified but I still kept on going even though my body wanted to quit. As I reached the table, I started kicking it with my feet in attempt to get the phone on the floor where I was. After making many attempts of kicking the leg of the table, the phone finally fell of the floor with a thud near my hands. Luckily, except for a slight crack on the screen, it did not break to the point where I could not use it. With my hands still cuffed, I slowly started to dial the emergency number. My heart was still racing as I did so. I was grunting as my fingers were struggling to press the numbers on the number pad. "112 how may I help you?" I heard a lady on the line after successfully entering the three-digit number. "MB police station, evidence room, I w-was shot! H-help me!" I struggled to speak but luckily, I got my message across. "Don't worry sir, help is on the way!" I heard when the line cut off immediately. I felt relieved knowing that help was on the way. I was patiently waiting in pain on the floor, trying my best to stay alive for this investigation. In case I did not make it, I thought to call Olivia and inform her about what I knew so far. I groaned as I slowly typed in Olivia's number. After a few seconds of dialing, Olivia finally answered the call. "Hello?" I barely heard as my heavy breathing filled up my ears.
