HIS MOUTHED open, stare at me with wide eyes. He quickly leaned back in his chair, and smacked his palm against his forehead.
"How did it happen?" he asked suspiciously.
"I hired an investigator a year ago. I gave him all the information I could to find Zekiah. And only in recent months have I received information about him."
"Are you sure about that? Maybe that investigator is just fooling you because of the big reward in return?"
"I'm with him at home." I'm sure I said.
"No, you can't be serious, Emory!" he raised his eye brows, clench hand over his head.
"I'm dead serious, Ellwood! He's alive, he's alive... and I already talked to him." I quickly response. It was too late for me to retract what I said because his eyebrows seemed to rise even higher at the last thing I said.
"Isn't that the ghost you say you can talk to?" he said, crinkle his eyes and nose.
"Ellie!" I shut him a look, and muttered some curses.
"Alright, I believe so, so where is he? Why didn't you include him here?" His smiled that seemed to reach both of his ears, still not losing the doubt in his eyes.
I suddenly said nothing, I felt like I would die if he found out the truth. Elwood is my childhood bestfriend, he is always with me in all my trials in life. We grow up together, with same course and a latin honors. I really feel that he is my constant competitor to everyone even with my Dad, he is one of his favorite when it comes to my friends. He is probably the one I can call friends with benefits not including sexual pleasure. I can't hurt him for me, because I know when to get angry and that's what I don't want to do.
But I can't help but tell him the truth. I know he will surely understand everything. Especially the presence of Hezekiah that had amnesia.
"He is suffering from what?!" His pitch voice increased, unable to even paint his face on me.
"He got an amnesia," I uttererd, bowed my head to my lap.
"Tss... That's impossible! He's been missing for almost three years and hasn't he even looked for a relative or even complained to the police?!" He didn't seem to hold back the anger.
"Elie, calm down," I said softly, I don't want to surprise him with what I say next.
"How can I calm down? Your husband is such a jerk! Maybe he's not using his small head for not finding his real family or finding out what happened to him!" he grumble, and slammed his hand at the table as if we were the only people inside the coffee shop.
"Elie..." I said, bowing my head in shame. My both cheeks turn red, how tightly I wrap my two hands on my thighs.
"I'm sorry, but I don't know what I can do when we meet, and I will surely punch his face to make that idiot aware!" He continues to say.
"He married... another woman," I calmly said but two hands digging into a fist.
He didn't speak immediately. I saw the shock registered on his face and a blank with confusion, but suddenly he burst out laughing... A giggles rolled out of him making his shoulder shake.
I bit my lower lip hard, I also wanted to laugh at what I said but I couldn't.
"It's some kind of a joke or what?" The smile is still on his lips.
I didn't answer, I have nothing to say. I know It's almost like a disease, this lover coursing through my veins and it's going to destroy me.
His smiles immediately faded and she suddenly stood up. I was also immediately enveloped in nervousness because of the intensity of his look at me.
"You are wasting my time here, Meredith," he said before leaving me without a second thought.
I got up quickly to signal the waiter. "Please, keep the change," I said to the waiter and follow him outside.
I reached him riding in his car. "Elie, wait!" I restrained his arm.
He turned his face to me with much darker look.
"Please, let me explain everything..." I begged.
He stared at me for a long minute, before calmly facing me. "Tell me everything, because I'm not going to just stand here and do nothing." His voice is threatening, eyes almost flushed with anger.
"That fucking bastard!" He made a loud bang on his car door. I nervously put my hand on my mouthed, full of fear that I resisted him to further attempt at punching his car. After I tell him everything.
"Please, Elie calm down!" I said
"Tell me, how can I calm down now?!" He turned to me with angry eyes.
"Please..." I whispered, I didn't have the strength to let him go and wiped my mouth to stop crying but I just broke down, as much as I tried to hold it in, the pain came out like an uproar from my throat in the form of a silent scream.
Immediately the expression on his face changed to mine and he quickly turned to hug me. "Sssh, I'm sorry," he whispered back.
I sobbed into his chest unceasingly, clutching at his T-shirt. I want to cry, when there are no tears left in my eyes so that there is no more pain in my heart. We were like that for a few more minutes before I let go of it and wiped away the tears.
"I want to see him." He interrupted the silence we both had.
I immediately looked up at him and then shook one after another. "No, you can't. You won't say anything to him." I grab his shirt again and there take strength for him to stop whatever he plans to do.
"He needs to know everything, you're the legal wife. You should fight for the spot." he added, with his softer tone.
"I know, but it's not that easy to do. He still doesn't remember anything and I'm not sure if he'll believe me."
Again a heavy sighed he released between us. "So, what are you planning to do? Don't tell me, you want to play the roll of a mistress?" He accused.
I didn't answer, I lowered my head down. It's funny to think that's what I plan to do, but how am I going to do that if I'm the real wife?
"You can't be serious about it, Meredith." He laugh at that.
"If only that was the only way for him to come back to me. Maybe he'll remember everything," I said, with more serious tone.
"I can't believe this is happening," he sounded very disappointed.
"We have another problem..." I cut him off.
He glared at me with his rebel eyes.
"They invited Mom for their house blessing this coming Sunday." I murmured.
"Elie, they shouldn't meet. I'm not ready to let Mommy know everything yet, you know what she can do. I can't bear to lose him again, Elie!" pleading I said.
He sighed at that, two hands inside his pocket, "I'll try, what I can do about it."
