Nicole waited patiently for it to get to her turn, she was anxious, she still didn't believe the result of the test she did at home was accurate and didn't want to get her hopes up, that she might truly be pregnant, it took a while for it to get to her turn as there were a lot of people in the laboratory she had to choose to use. when it got to her turn, she handed her bag over to Grace and went with the phlebotomist to get her sample taken after which she had to wait again for the result to be ready while waiting for the result, she was torn between praying for it to be true and wondering what she will do if it indeed turns out she was pregnant, how was she going to handle taking care of her child alone or would Rafael want to have anything to do with their child? Would he want her back if it turns out that she is pregnant and will she go back to him just for her child? The thoughts were running through her head that she didn't know when the nurse called her name and told her she was the next?
"Nicole, it's your turn,"
Grace said tapping her, she stood up for a moment not knowing what to do until the nurse called her name again.
"Mrs. Nicole Salvador,"
She didn't even realize she had told the woman Rafael's surname instead of her own and didn't have time to dwell on that as she walked into the doctor's office with shaking hands.
"Good day, ma'am, "
She greeted the elderly-looking woman she met there she smiled brightly and asked her to sit down which she did with her hands still shaking her mind running in different directions.
"When last did you get your period?"
The woman asked, she had a nice smoothen voice that made Nicole calm down just a little.
"Last month, at the beginning of last month,"
"And you are supposed to see it already this month? Have you?"
"No, my period has always been irregular,"
She revealed wishing the woman will just go straight to the point instead of making her go through this but she knew this was the norm and she had to go with it and answer her questions.
"And you were last sexually active when?"
"Last month too,"
She replied and the woman nodded in understanding.
"Well, I am guessing you are married since you have a Mrs. to your name,"
Nicole didn't need to tell her she was divorced so she nodded.
"Well, then it's good news, congratulations,"
Her heart skipped a beat, wait, not just a beat, a hell lots of beat, she stood up and sat back down trying to process what just happened.
"Are you sure ma'am? Not that I doubt the results, you see I have done it before and I was thinking I made a mistake, how is this possible doc?"
She asked still not ready to believe it, it was Impossible, the doctors told her she had a very low chance, how can she be pregnant?"
"There is no doubt that you are pregnant Mrs. Salvador,"
"But I can't be pregnant,"
She let out.
"And why if I may ask? Were you not sexually active or what?"
"No, I was, it's not that, you see the doc, I recently had a miscarriage,"
She said and paused.
"And? A miscarriage doesn't mean you can't get pregnant again my dear,"
The doctor replied, Nicole, shook her head.
"You are not getting it, ma'am, I fell from the stairs, lost my baby, spent a few days in a coma and after that, I was told my chances of getting pregnant again were pretty much zero, I did a series of tests before I was discharged, so how am I already pregnant again barely four months later? That's not possible,"
She explained. The doctor smiled.
"My dear, the body has a way of fixing itself, yes, maybe at that time, you had a very low chance due to the impact of the fall, but a lot of things can change with a short time and the human body is one of the most constant change, did you go back again to check?"
The doctor asked, Nicole hadn't thought it necessary when the doctor had told her she might never carry a child in her womb again, it had been hard on her and she didn't want to get her hoped up for nothing so she had stayed away, now she wishes she did, maybe she would have known.
"I didn't go back,"
"Well, seeing that you are pregnant, your body most likely fixed itself and you can conceive and give birth like every other woman,"
The doctor said with a smile, Nicole still couldn't believe it.
"What do I do now?"
She said more to herself, she hadn't planned for a baby and this was the last thing she had in mind, the shock was still there.
"Do what's best for you but my advice is for you to share the news with your husband first, I am sure he will be happy with the news, it's good news and you are one lucky woman,"
The doctor said, it was true that she was lucky, this doesn't happen to everyone, she had googled her condition when she had still been trapped in a wheelchair and the were only a few cases of the women getting pregnant again, this was a miracle, she just didn't know what to do with it, she couldn't even tell Rafael, what would he think of her he won't believe her, she was damn too sure of that.
Nicole thanked the doctor and walked out of her office to where Grace was seated waiting for her.
"How did it go?"
Grace asked as soon as she got to where she was.
"Let's talk at home Grace,"
She said weakly. She was still in shock and was still finding it hard to believe...
