Chapter Thirty-Nine

Rose, who recently married Alfonso, was still the talk of the country in Italy. With their wedding bells still ringing in their ears and their newly founded family and friends, they were eager to see exactly where life was taking them. Little did Rose know that her relationship would soon be tested by an unexpected revelation involving her mother-in-law's friend, Martha.
Rose had heard her mother-in-law mention Martha's name in passing over the months. Mrs. Tommaso and Martha had been friends for ages, sharing stories and laughter. Though Rose had never met Martha in person, she trusted her mother-in-law's good judgment and didn't think much about their friendship.
One evening, while Rose was clearing the room her mother-in-law had stayed in while she came visiting, she inadvertently stumbled upon a photograph tucked away in an old album. Flipping through the pages, she froze as she saw a picture of Martha with Alfonso, her husband. It looked innocent enough, but something about Martha's expression ignited a pang of unease within Rose.
Unable to shake off her suspicions, Rose mustered up the courage to ask her mother-in-law about the photograph. She approached the topic delicately, explaining her concerns and seeking clarity.
Mrs. Tommaso, taken aback by the unexpected questions, assured Rose that it was all a misunderstanding and that Martha was nothing more than a dear friend.
Despite her reassurances, Rose couldn't shake off her uneasiness. She decided to investigate further, hoping to find peace of mind. Through discreet inquiries and conversations with mutual acquaintances, Rose discovered that Martha had indeed harbored intentions beyond friendship for her daughter with Alfonso.
She knew she was not one to be easily deceived; she had seen Martha and her daughter in almost all Alfonso pictures, and if her guess was correct, then Nicole was Martha's daughter.
"Gosh, why does trouble like me so much?" She asked herself, nervous about her newly acquired piece of information.
She just wanted to have some quiet revenge and live on with her life, but ever since she got her life entangled with Alfonso, everything kept getting interesting.

Selena had always found Alfonso, Rose's husband, incredibly charming and intriguing. She couldn't deny the pull she felt toward him, but she never intended for things to escalate beyond a harmless crush after her last plan failed. Selena knew she needed to keep her feelings at bay, yet deep down, she yearned for him to notice her.
Mrs. Tommaso, Rose's mother-in-law, had been a distant business partner and friend of Selena's family for years. Selena found solace in Mrs. Tommaso's presence. She admired the way Mrs. Tommaso carried herself—confident, caring, and full of wisdom. Selena saw her as a role model and hoped that by impressing Mrs. Tommaso, she might also catch Alfonso's attention.
Fueled by her infatuation, Selena concocted a plan to win over Mrs. Tommaso. She eagerly studied her likes and interests, hoping to find common ground. Selena believed that if she could form a strong bond with Mrs. Tommaso, it might indirectly influence Alfonso's opinion of her.
Selena began by considering Mrs. Tommaso's favorite activities and hobbies. She'd bring her books, cook meals, and initiate conversations centered around Mrs. Tommaso's passions. Selena genuinely enjoyed spending time with Mrs. Tommaso, but her motivations were tinged with ulterior motives.
As Selena's efforts persisted, she uncovered unexpected aspects of Mrs. Tommaso's life. She learned about Mrs. Tommaso's love for gardening and the joy she found in nurturing plants. Unbeknownst to Selena, her genuine interest in Mrs. Tommaso's life began to exceed her initial intentions.
Alfonso noticed Selena's growing friendship with his mother and immediately got furious. One thing he was trying to avoid was getting his mother involved in the game they were playing.
She had been through a lot, and the last thing he wanted was for her to get caught up in their web of lies and get heartbroken again.
He observed their blossoming bond from afar and was annoyed by Selena's attentiveness towards his family.
He looked at Rose,loving every single thing about her, from the way she talked to the respect she had for everyone around her. It made him confused, as he found himself questioning his feelings towards her, wondering if there was more to their connection than he initially realized.
One day, while chatting with Mrs. Tommaso, Selena unintentionally let slip her true feelings towards Alfonso. Shocked and disappointed, Mrs. Tommaso immediately halted their conversation and asked Selena to address her feelings directly with Alfonso and Rose.
Selena realized the enormity of her mistake and the pain she had caused. She mustered up the courage to have an honest conversation with Alfonso and Rose, taking responsibility for her actions and expressing her deepest regrets. It was a painful revelation that sparked heartache and confusion among all parties involved.
Selena understood the importance of making amends. She sought therapy and counseling, determined to gain clarity and address her own emotional well-being. She apologized to Rose, Alfonso, and Mrs. Tommaso, vowing to respect their boundaries and work on rebuilding trust.
Rose couldn't keep up with the girls games anymore, wondering about her sanity. She wondered how she had the heart to play anyone around her.
She crossed a limit this time by taking an innocent woman into her web of games, which she could forgive.
She saw Mrs. Tommaso as a mother and had great respect for her, so she was ready to do anything to save her from heartbreak if she could.
Alfonso had told her about his past relationship with Nicole and how it had affected his mother a great deal, so she was trying her best not to let history repeat itself again, even though they all knew it was going to be hard, as she was going to eventually find out the truth later on.
As for Selena, she maintained a respectful distance from the family, allowing them to heal and move forward. With newfound wisdom, Selena vowed to learn from her mistakes and be mindful of her own emotions. That we all know were lies.
