Cursed System Chapter 52

RAGNA POV... Even though we were her grandchildren, my Grandma—Midwife Maida—showed no favoritism whatsoever. Of course, no one in the village knew about our relationship. To the public, older sister was just another patient, which meant she had to wait her turn like everyone else. Honestly... my head was a mess. The terrifying midwife everyone feared was somehow my grandmother. And yet, ever since we arrived, after that brief moment of familial warmth, she and Mother had gone back to acting like complete strangers. But that wasn’t even my biggest problem. My real issue was the barrage of glowing notifications burning into my vision. My head throbbed as the words hovered there, unmoving. My eyes narrowed so much that, if not for the cloth covering my face, the expression I was making would have scared the living hell out of everyone. > [Does host desire to spread his seeds to relatives?] [Yes] — [No] When it was finally Oge’s turn, my mind was still drowning in chaos. I barely paid attention to what my Grandma was doing. I stood beside her, staring blankly at her hands as they moved—methodical, precise. Mother watched me instead, guilt etched deep into her face. Even now, she couldn’t tell me the truth. Couldn’t explain why things were the way they were. Grandma made several hand gestures, then gently rubbed Oge’s back, moving down along her waist. After a long moment, she stopped. She sighed. "I have good news and bad news," she said. "The good news is that her condition hasn’t worsened. There’s no degeneration—for now." Everyone leaned in. "The bad news," she continued, "is that it isn’t improving either. I’m afraid she will remain like this... permanently. As she grows, the chances of her body recovering on its own will only decrease." The room went silent. A lifelong illness... was barely any better than a death sentence. I hadn’t been paying attention until then, but those final words smashed straight through my thoughts. I stood there, dazed, staring at my sister. The world meant nothing to me if I couldn’t share it with the few people who trusted and loved me unconditionally. We left the clinic in silence. No one spoke on the way home. Not a single word. When we arrived, I had originally planned to confront my parents—ask them why I had never been told about our relatives. But the moment I stepped inside, all those motivation and thoughts vanished. I retreated to a corner and stayed there. Elina told John the news. She collapsed into his arms, sobbing. One by one, the rest of the family broke down, clinging to each other in search of comfort. Everyone... except me. And Gustav. For me, no tears came out. It felt like the moisture in my eyes had completely dried up. I just stared blankly ahead, numb. Life once again refused to show me any mercy. As for Gustav... This was progress. A huge step closer to his goal. And that was all that mattered to him. If every member of this useless family died tomorrow, he wouldn’t shed a single tear. If it were up to him, even his so-called father wouldn’t still be alive, crying like a baby. What’s the point of having a system... If I’m still useless to the people who matter most to me? Why does life keep reminding me that without oxygen, I’m nothing but a corpse? Is this just bad luck... or a curse for being a cursed child? For the next few days, I shoved the notification message to the back of my mind. I questioned every decision I had ever made, until I finally accepted something painful. I couldn’t change the past. But I could change the future. Oge hadn’t always been sick. Her illness started after my reincarnation—and more importantly, after Gustav arrived. The realization burned. If I had taken my chance and eliminated that bastard earlier, my sister wouldn’t be standing at death’s door. The anger nearly consumed me. The next day, I made a decision. I would prove myself—to everyone. More importantly, I made a promise to myself. No one will ever hurt my family again. The best way to do that? Become the perfect son. The perfect butler. With my abilities, skills, and techniques, I was certain Gustav wouldn’t be able to do a damn thing to my sister—or anyone else. The next morning, the entire house woke up in shock. It gleamed. Every surface shone with a pristine luster. At first, everyone looked at my mother, but the confusion on her face made it clear she was just as surprised. Even Gustav clutched his head, frowning deeply. If his suspicion was right, then that four-eyed imp was far more abnormal than he had imagined. Slowly, everyone noticed me stepping out of the dining room with a broom in hand. I gently set it aside and walked over to Mother. She couldn’t stop grinning. From that day on, I kept proving myself. I handled every household chore, relieving Mother and Oge of their burdens. With my speed and stamina, sweeping the entire house took barely a minute. Even in the dead of night, nothing escaped my sight. I paid close attention to how my body reacted. Nothing seemed to affect me—not fatigue, not strain. No sluggishness, no backlash. The only change... My skin faintly glowed under the sun. After some thought, I concluded it was likely a side effect of my meditation technique—or perhaps one of its sub-techniques. Either way... This was only the beginning.
