Cursed System Chapter 49

RAGNA POV... Elina immediately felt dejected. She was proud of me and hated the idea of hiding her child, but the situation was forcing her hand. It felt like they might even attack me if given the chance. As the atmosphere in the end shifted, I felt it before I fully understood it. Low gasps rippled through the room, followed by scornful gazes sharp enough to scrape the skin. The waiting hall tightened, as though the air itself had grown wary of us. Families subtly edged away, creating distance as if proximity alone might curse them. Some women pulled their blankets closer around their children, hiding little faces and averting their eyes, as though I carried an unseen plague. The murmur of the room grew louder—clattering whispers layered with judgment. Elina walked forward stiffly, her steps measured. I felt Oge shiver beside me, but soon calmed down when Elina tightened her grip on our hands. None of us spoke. None of us dared move. Every eye in the room tracked us, watchful and sharp, as if we were beasts waiting to bare our fangs. Was this how much they hate Cursed Children? The answer was written plainly on their faces. Those who weren’t openly hostile refused to meet our eyes at all. I had no doubt that if this weren’t a clinic—if there weren’t rules, laws, and the looming authority of the Holy Shrine—we would already be bleeding on the floor. According to my parents, attacking Cursed Children was forbidden, punishable by severe judgment from the village head. But hatred didn’t disappear just because it was outlawed. It only learned to whisper. With my heightened senses, I heard everything. Low mutters. Snorts of disdain. Hateful curses flung in our direction without restraint. Some went further—cursing my family, our bloodline, even children yet unborn. Then a voice rose above the rest, dripping with mockery. "First she gives birth to a cursed boy. Then again, another cursed one. Tsk. I wonder if her womb is filled with curses and demonic spawn." Laughter followed—thin, cruel, satisfied. Elina sat down slowly. Her shoulders sagged, and the warmth she always carried seemed to drain from her body. I saw her eyes glisten, tears pooling at the corners no matter how hard she tried to hold them back. It made something inside me twist. The woman who always smiled—the one who laughed even when she was tired—looked like she might break. I had never seen this side of her before, and I hated it. Rage coiled tight in my chest, burning hotter with every whispered insult. If not for my family, I would have already activated one of my abilities, and could have silenced this entire room. But the venom hadn’t finished spilling. A group of women leaned forward, hands twitching as if itching to throw something. "What’s she frowning for?" one sneered. "Who knows what she did in her miserable life to be cursed with children like that!" Idiots. How could humans be so consistently cruel? Even with laws, with order, there were always those who slipped through—protected by status, wealth, or loopholes. No one cared what you endured. They only cared to speak poison about it. I clenched my fists. If they want a Cursed Child... I’ll show them one. I was about to stand, already weighing which skill to use, when a sharp, aged voice cut through the noise like a blade. "What a bunch of idiots, how about you shut your dumb asses up!" The words hit me harder than any insult. I froze. "What is the meaning of this?" The voice continued, thick with fury. "Is this how you treat a fellow woman? If any of you hoes were in her place, would you dare open your damn mouths?" The room went still. An elderly woman stood near the curtain, her eyes blazing as she glared at the so-called mature women who now shrank under her gaze. When she had first arrived, she must have intended to ignore the commotion. But she had reached her limit—especially when it involved someone dear to her. This was her clinic. And she wouldn’t tolerate this farce. Some women tried to retort, but her glare silenced them instantly. Others muttered under their breath, eyes lowered. Elina quickly stood, bowing slightly. "I’m sorry," she said softly. "For causing trouble—" "There’s no need to apologize, Elina, dear," The woman interrupted, her tone softening instantly. "I only wanted to wake a few naive idiots from their slumber. And—oh? Is this our little CB?" She guided us toward a corner of the room, ignoring the hateful stares that followed. She gestured for us to sit, but my mother hesitated. Instead, she turned to me, eyes pleading. Before I could make sense of it, she spoke. "Ragna... why haven’t you greeted your grandma?" I stared at her, stunned. Grandma? I looked back at the old woman, confusion knotting my thoughts. Isn’t she the midwife? Or is this some out-of-world courtesy? The woman chuckled. "Even though it’s been quite some time, is this how you little imps greet your lovely grandma?" My eyes widened. The old hag—no, the old woman—smiled, her face creasing deeply as she ruffled older ssister’s hair. Oge smiled back without hesitation. Then, as if that wasn’t enough, she bent down until her eyes met mine. She stared straight into me, unblinking. And in that moment, I knew—this woman was anything but ordinary.
