Cursed System Chapter 38

They were born like normal children, but their defining traits were unmistakable: two to three pairs of eyes and an ouroboros-shaped demon mark hidden somewhere within their bodies. When I first learned this, I was stunned. For several seconds, I had no reaction at all. No one knew what I was thinking—perhaps not even me. No matter how much I tried to make sense of my situation, it remained difficult to understand. Still, John and Elina had clearly decided they could no longer delay. And so, on that particular morning...... [Ragna pov] After John sent Gustav to manage the farm ranch, my father decided it was finally time—unfortunately—to let us know the reason behind our harsh and absurd reality. This decision didn’t come easily. After countless nights of long, heavy discussions, my parents agreed that we deserved to know the truth. We were growing too fast, already standing at the edge of adulthood, and more importantly, their plan to escape this hellhole of a village depended on it. Even then, they felt the timing was wrong. But no matter how much they tried to delay it, they couldn’t postpone it any longer. This wasn’t just about their own lives anymore. It was about us—about their children—who were already in danger. That day, they also decided to tell us the truth about their first son, the one who had "mysteriously" passed away. After explaining what truly happened to him, and why I was labeled a Cursed Child, they finally moved on to the origin of it all. They told us the true tale—the myth, the legend—of how Cursed Children came to exist. Beings said to be the spawns of demons, and sons of the devil. According to them, this was not just another folklore. It was a real and deeply buried secret about the first appearance of a Cursed Child. Many believed the first Cursed Child was born naturally from a woman’s womb, but they said that belief was nothing more than rumor and carefully crafted lies. The truth, they said, was far more unbelievable, and so, they told us the story. The Tale of a Cursed Child (as it was passed down) [The first cursed child POV] I remember looking up at the sky that night, my heart pounding with excitement. "Didn’t Papa say that a meteor shower signifies the fall of a powerful treasure...?" I said to myself, a childish grin spreading across my face as the stars streaked across the darkness. "I don’t really know what it means, or even if it’s real," I muttered, "but Papa once said it brings good fortune. If that’s true, then an opportunity like this won’t come again anytime soon!" I clenched my fists, excitement bubbling over. "I bet this place will be swarming with people soon—merchants, gold men, maybe even nobles. I have to be the first to get the good stuff. Who knows? I might even walk the path of a merchant one day, become a respected noble... then my family would finally be proud of me." From everything Papa had told me, if I hesitated even a little, the traveling merchants—the ones who passed through our village once in a while with massive cargo wagons—would surely discover this place first. They were rich beyond belief... and greedy. Even the knights nearby were no small matter. "What if it’s a legendary artifact...?" My eyes sparkled with reflected starlight, and before I realized it, saliva slipped from the corner of my mouth. "If I remember right, the wandering soldiers always talk about things like this in their stories. When heroes are young, they stumble upon a treasure by chance and walk the path of destiny. That’s so damn cool..." The more I thought about it, the more my excitement grew. My admiration for heroes and knights burned fiercely in my chest. I couldn’t hold myself back anymore. After only a few seconds of thought, I gathered all my courage and stepped into the dense forest, searching for the fallen meteor—what I believed was a treasure. The forest was thick with towering trees. A cold breeze brushed past, pushing aside patches of dried yellow grass. Beneath them, half-buried in a damp tropical soil, lay a broken sword—rusted, mottled, and ancient, as though it had slept there for years. Strangely, faint threads of dark red light flickered along the blade, illuminating its maroon-stained edges. The forest rustled. My hurried footsteps broke the silence as I pushed through tall grass and tangled branches. My curly black hair clung to my forehead with sweat. The linen clothes I wore were tattered and repeatedly mended, a clear sign of my family’s poverty—but I didn’t care. I was chasing destiny. Unseen by me, high within the shadows of the trees and the forest, something watched. Perched atop an enormous tree, several meters above the ground, a dark figure hid silently. The overlapping shadows of the forest concealed its presence so completely that even if the entire forest were flattened, its silhouette would remain unseen. Its eyes glowed with an eerie, blood-red light as it gazed down at me. "Oh? I’ve caught a prey," the figure whispered softly. "My, my... judging by his appearance, he seems to be the first to have sensed that thing. A child from a nearby village, perhaps." The red glow in its eyes intensified. "Oh... I could make use of him. It wouldn’t be so bad to gather children from the lowest levels of society—understanding their structure, their hierarchy. If His Majesty’s experiment succeeds..." The voice faded into silence, unanswered. [Ragna POV] And that, my parents said, was how it all began.
