The recent incident had left Shen Heyu greatly shaken. After leaving the presidential suite, she felt her heart beating faster and faster, as if it was about to leap out of her chest.
She walked to the elevator and pressed the button, her mind drifting back to what had just happened. Just then, the elevator doors slowly opened, and Pei Yansi walked out.
Pei Yansi, seeing Shen Heyu’s distraught appearance, worriedly grabbed her shoulders. After thoroughly checking, he found that Shen Heyu was not injured.
"What happened, Shen Heyu?"
Hearing her name called jolted Shen Heyu back to reality. She looked up at Pei Yansi, who was looking at her with concern.
"Pei Yansi," Shen Heyu called out his name faintly.
"At the hotel, a woman fell to her death. She jumped from the presidential suite where Lu Yi was staying." When Pei Yansi first heard that a woman had jumped from the presidential suite booked by Lu Yi, he thought it was Shen Heyu, and he almost blacked out.
"You look like you need to rest. Let me take you home to rest," Pei Yansi said, seeing the paleness of Shen Heyu’s face; his heart felt as if it was being tightly clenched.
Shen Heyu nodded again. Just as she was about to step into the elevator with Pei Yansi, everything went dark before her eyes, and she felt the world spinning around her.
Shen Heyu passed out, and Pei Yansi caught her in one arm, seeing her weak state. He felt as if the air in his chest was being sucked out, leaving him breathless.
He gently brushed away the hair from her forehead, then bent down and lifted her in a princess carry.
Carrying Shen Heyu through the chaos and noisy disorder, he got into the car and returned to the love nest they once shared.
When Shen Heyu awoke, she barely opened her eyes to a slit and through the blurry vision, she saw the familiar setting of the bedroom.
She was back in the bridal room she once shared with Pei Yansi.
Shen Heyu did not know how long she had slept. All she knew was that when she woke up, her head felt as heavy as if it was filled with stones.
She turned her head and glanced outside; the night was deep.
Looking down, Shen Heyu checked her phone on the bedside table. It was already two in the morning—she had been unconscious for almost half a day.
Drawing a sharp breath, Shen Heyu looked around and did not see Pei Yansi anywhere. She got out of bed and had just reached the door when she heard voices from the living room downstairs.
"Shen Heyu would never kill anyone. I vouch for that," the voice was Pei Yansi’s, cold and resolute.
Hearing his voice made Shen Heyu feel as if she had stepped from walking on clouds to solid ground, no longer needing to live in fear.
"President Pei, but the evidence now clearly links Shen Heyu with the Crown Hotel suicide case. We must take her in for routine questioning."
Shen Heyu furrowed her brows as she approached the stairwell step by step. At the bottom, in the living room, sat several police officers while Pei Yansi was parked across from them on the couch, dressed in a sharp suit.
The chandelier’s lights shone on Pei Yansi, making him dazzle brilliantly. Seeing him felt like clutching at her last straw of hope for Shen Heyu.
Pei Yansi sneered, "Based on my investigation, that woman jumped from the building on her own accord. This has nothing to do with Shen Heyu."
"President Pei, however, according to eyewitness accounts, it was when Shen Heyu discovered her husband’s infidelity that she drove that woman to jump to her death. Moreover, the incident was recorded and spread online. Even if it is just to alleviate public pressure, we owe the public an explanation, and I hope you can understand."
"Who said these things?"
"Shen Heyu’s legal husband, Lu Yi, pointed it out. He said it was because Shen Heyu found him in bed, disheveled with that woman, and in a fit of rage, accidentally caused the woman’s death."
Standing upstairs, Shen Heyu almost collapsed upon hearing this.
Shen Heyu smiled weakly, unable to believe what she just heard. Lu Yi claimed it was she who had caused that woman’s death. How could that be?
Shen Heyu felt her spine had been inexplicably ripped out, her body weakened, and a heavy hand slapped onto the railing for support. The noise attracted attention from the living room below.
Pei Yansi looked up to see Shen Heyu’s fragile state, quickly stood up, and strode toward her. He reached out just in time to support her delicate form as she almost collapsed.
"Your body is very weak; why didn’t you just rest well in the room? Have you slept so long that you’re hungry? I could have the kitchen prepare your favorite dishes," Pei Yansi said tenderly, lifting her gaze to him as Shen Heyu shook her head.
"Even if you’re not hungry, going without food or drink for so long is detrimental. You should eat something; I’ll have the kitchen prepare some dishes you used to love."
Pei Yansi looked worriedly at Shen Heyu, her face void of any color, making Pei Yansi unconsciously tighten his grip on her hand.
"There’s no need for that," Shen Heyu said, smiling weakly. "Even if the food is brought in front of me, I don’t have an appetite right now." Pei Yansi frowned, knowing she was weighed down with heavy thoughts.
Just then, the police, who had been waiting downstairs, came up. They addressed Shen Heyu with a professional tone, "Miss Shen, you are currently a suspect in the Crown Hotel suicide case. Please come with us to make a statement."
"What suspect? This matter has nothing to do with her; she is the victim. As for the truth of this matter, I will thoroughly investigate and provide an explanation. But until then, I won’t allow anyone to trouble her."
Pei Yansi stood protectively in front of Shen Heyu, determined not to let anyone take her away.
Hearing Pei Yansi’s words, Shen Heyu felt a sense of security, but she smiled softly and then slowly pushed away Pei Yansi’s supporting hand.
"Since I am innocent, going with them to make a statement is no big deal; I will be back soon."
"I’m coming with you," Pei Yansi insisted, concerned for Shen Heyu, who seemed as vulnerable as a butterfly in a storm.
"No need..." Shen Heyu still refused.
"Shen Heyu, listen to me, if you won’t let me accompany you, I absolutely won’t allow anyone to take you away," Pei Yansi stated firmly.
