I sat on the jet feeling somewhat uncomfortable. I was scared of flying, I always had been.
I wasn't sure what started the fear, but I was scared to fly for as long as I could remember.
Wyatt was sitting opposite me, staring at me.
"What?" I asked.
"Why do you look so uncomfortable?"
"Probably because I am? I don't like flying. You know this."
{PAST}
I toyed with the hem of my white blouse.
"Baby, is that what you're wearing?" Caleb asked me.
I looked down at my attire; a white button-up shirt and a pair of blue jeans teamed with high-heeled ankle boots.
"What's wrong with what I'm wearing?"
"We're supposed to fly out to Paris."
I blinked at him in confusion, "Yeah? And? What's wrong with what I'm wearing?"
Caleb sighed heavily, "Baby, we're going with a lot of influential people. Can you maybe wear something a little more fitting?"
"I told you I'm not going."
"Caleb-" Wyatt paused as he walked in, "Am I interrupting?"
I crossed my arms over my chest, "No. Caleb forgot that I wasn't going to Paris."
"You aren't joining us?" Wyatt asked.
I shook my head, "No. I don't like flying."
Wyatt frowned, "Why not?"
I shrugged, "I don't know. Maybe because if God intended for us to fly, He would have given us wings?"
Wyatt chuckled, "Bubbles, you can't be serious. You're scared of flying?"
I nodded, "Yes, and Caleb knows this." I shot Caleb a pointed look.
"Dad, what is it going to look like if my girlfriend isn't with us?"
Wyatt looked at him with a frown, "Cancel the trip then."
"Dad, I can't. You know how important this is."
Caleb had arranged this trip to go away with all the big names in the business.
I walked out of the house.
"Kenz."
I turned to Wyatt as he followed behind me.
"I'm not getting on that jet, Mr. Grimes."
"I don't expect you to. I'm not here to try and change your mind or to make you do something that you don't want to do. I came out here to check on you because my son is being an ass again."
I sighed, "It's okay. This means a lot to him, I can't expect him to cancel just because I'm scared of planes."
"Kenzie, you are his girlfriend. You are meant to be the most important thing to him, not some trip."
"It's okay, really it is."
Wyatt sat down on the bench.
"What are you doing? Aren't you going to be late for the flight if you don't leave?" Just as I asked him, Caleb came out of the house with his luggage.
"Kenzie, baby, last chance. Please come with me."
I shook my head, "I can't. You have fun though."
He kissed me hastily on the cheek and walked toward the car, glancing back, "Dad? Come on."
Wyatt waved a hand, "You go ahead. I'm going to stay at home." He smiled at me.
"You're kidding me? Dad?"
"Go. You don't want to be late."
"Mr. Grimes, you don't have to stay behind because of me."
He patted the bench beside him, "Come, sit."
I took a seat beside him, "I'm serious. You should go." I watched as the car pulled away, Caleb didn't even seem phased by this as he drove away.
"Kenzie, I'm not going to leave you behind. What do you feel like doing today?"
I sighed, "Nothing. I have no plans."
He got to his feet and held out a hand to me, "How about we change that?"
I stared at his hand for a moment before taking it and getting to my feet, "You don't have to do this."
"I know that. I want to."
I smiled at him. Although my emotions were a little messed up I was starting to feel better.
I got into the car with Wyatt.
"Where are we going?"
"I have no idea. I was thinking of the ice rink?"
My eyes widened, "You skate?" Of all the activities I could imagine Wyatt doing, ice skating was not one of them.
"No. But I recall Caleb saying you liked it."
I laughed, "It's fun but I'm terrible at it."
"Hmm, amusement park?"
"Okay?" I giggled, "I can't imagine you enjoying an amusement park."
"Why not? I'm not all business all the time."
{PRESENT}
I found myself smiling at the memory.
"You're thinking about the amusement park, aren't you?" Wyatt asked.
I nodded, "I am. I had a good day."
"That's all I wanted. I just wanted you to have a good time."
I kept my head down, not wanting to catch any glimpses of the outside knowing it would start up my fear again.
"Kenzie, why are you so scared of flying?"
I shrugged, "I have no idea. All I know is that it terrifies me so much."
He got out of his seat and came over to me, crouching in front of me and taking my hands in his, "Look at me."
I raised my head enough to look at him, "Wyatt, I don't need you to try some bullshit right now. I'm scared of flying, and I'm really trying to hold it together right now."
He sighed, "Trust me, alright?"
"Fine."
He stood up, positioning himself next to me with his hands on my shoulders, "Look out the window."
"What? Are you crazy?!"
"Just trust me."
I sighed and forced myself to look out the window.
I immediately began shaking.
"Don't focus on the fear. Focus on my voice. Only my voice." He continued speaking and at first it was hard, but I found myself calming a little bit.
I was still scared, but it was manageable.
I turned to him, "I think that's enough for today."
He returned to his seat with a smile on his face, "You don't need to be scared, Kenz."
I found myself annoyed with the fact that he was able to calm me. I preferred to deal with things in my own way, and not rely on someone else.
Especially not Wyatt Grimes.
