I was sitting on my sofa with Toby on my lap when there was a loud knock on the door.
I shot a glare at the door, hoping the person would go away.
"It's Paul."
I rolled my eyes but got to my feet to open the door.
"How many times are you going to come back here before you realize that I don't want to see anyone? I just want to be alone."
He pushed his way in, "Kenzie, what happened?"
I raised a brow, "I walked into the office and found Wyatt with one of the girls from a club," I shrugged, "Honestly, I'm not even mad at him. I'm mad at myself for thinking that there was any sort of chance for us. I know what he is."
Paul sighed heavily, "Kenz, speak to him. He's messed up. But he cares for you."
I scoffed, "Paul, I appreciate you trying to help, but this is a mess I'm not willing to try and fix. Wyatt is not capable of a relationship. He never has been. It's just one of those things."
"When you left, I saw a broken man. I know because I've been there."
"It's for the best. He will get over it, and so will I. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go visit my mom."
He nodded and stepped aside, but I could see in his eyes that he was upset with me.
I paused at the door, "Paul, I know that you care about me. But please leave this thing with Wyatt alone."
When I arrived at the hospital I let out an annoyed breath when I saw Wyatt sitting in one of the chairs.
"What are you doing here?"
"Your mother has taken a turn for the worst. I'm here because I brought one of my doctors in."
"What? What happened?"
"She's slipped into a coma. But don't worry, my doctor is the best money can buy."
My heart dropped at his words. How could she be in a coma?
"He is hopeful she will pull through, so there's nothing to worry about."
"Thank you for the help. Now leave."
He frowned, "I don't think so. We need to talk."
I shook my head, "Not now."
"Tonight?"
"No, Wyatt. I have my mother to worry about."
He got to his feet, "There is nothing you can do, Kenzie. She is in the best hands."
"Even so. I don't have anything to say to you." I held my ground, refusing to back down and allow him to take me for a fool again.
"Well, I have things to say to you. So, how about you just listen."
"I'm not interested." I turned to find a doctor.
"Kenzie," he grabbed hold of my arm.
"Let go of me, Wyatt. I'm sure you don't want to be dragged out of here by the security."
He clenched his jaw but let go of my arm.
I walked away to find a doctor, only to be told that I couldn't see my mother yet. Walking out, I found Wyatt waiting outside of the hospital.
"Wyatt, please, I don't want to do this with you."
"That's the problem, Kenzie. You don't want to do this with me. You never want to do this with me. You sleep with me to get back at Caleb, and then you disappear. Now you sleep with me and tell me it's nothing more, it can never be anything more. But then you get pissed off when I listen to you. What do you want from me?"
"Nothing, Wyatt. I want nothing from you."
"So why are you pissed at me?"
I sighed, "I'm not. I just realized that we need to keep a professional relationship. Now, please leave me alone."
Even though I was adamant about holding my ground, my subconscious was killing me.
Tell him the truth. Tell him you love him.
"Kenzie-"
"Wyatt, stop. Or I swear to God, I will tell Caleb."
"Tell him. I don't care. It's you who wanted to keep this a secret, not me."
"Wyatt, go find one of the girls from the club and leave me alone. I'm serious."
He stepped aside, "Fine. I'll do that."
I sighed and walked away with an ache in my chest. How could I have let this go so badly?
I knew it was a terrible idea to admit my feelings for him, but here I was.
When I got home, I found Caleb at my door.
"Not now, Caleb." I groaned.
"Kenzie, I need a friend. I don't know what to do anymore."
I leaned against the wall beside my door, "What did you do?"
"Nothing yet. But I miss you. And I know that I fucked it all up, but I think I still love you. I don't think I've ever stopped loving you. I was just so young and stupid that I didn't realize it."
I sighed, "Caleb, you and I will never be together. I care for you deeply but as a friend and nothing more. I'm sorry."
He nodded, "I know. But I needed to tell you."
"You should tell your fiance. This isn't right."
"I did. I spoke to Selma about everything. I love her too, and she understands it."
I was surprised to hear that.
"We're still getting married, we're going to work through it. I just wanted to tell you how I feel so that I can face it."
"Okay. Now, can you leave?"
He looked down, hesitating, "I need to speak to you about something else."
"What now?"
"What's going on with you and my father?"
"What do you mean?" My heart raced, worried he had figured out I slept with Wyatt.
"Is he trying to sleep with you?"
"No, of course not. How can you even ask me that?"
Caleb shrugged, "I don't know. You know my father, he must conquer every woman he can. And you're the one woman he can't. I saw the two of you arguing outside the offices today."
"That was about his annoying bossiness. You don't have to worry about me, Caleb."
He nodded, "I hope not. I know how charming he can be."
"Well, you don't have to worry about me. I'm pretty good at fending off his charm."
"I'll see you this weekend?"
I frowned, "Why? What's happening this weekend?"
"Dinner at my grandfathers. We're discussing the wedding and Selma wants you there."
"I don't know. I'll see."
He nodded and walked away, leaving me wondering what Selma was up to. I couldn't understand why she would want me there after he told her how he felt about me.
