Demon Hunter and His Cabin Chapter 90

Chapter 92: Chapter 092 Clues Roger flipped through the documents in his hand. “You didn’t say that before.” Danielle rolled her eyes indifferently, “Then how do you want me to say it?” “Tell them that Judd died of a cramp while he was doing that thing with me?” “That would bring me a lot of trouble.” Roger’s eyes narrowed slightly. “But now you’re telling the truth.” In fact, he couldn’t even tell if the words of the girl in front of him were true or false. “You’re different from them.” A perfectly timed hint of something strange flashed in Danielle’s eyes. “Those guys just want to wrap up the case quickly. I know what they want to hear, but you’re different. If I lied, it would probably make you suspicious.” “I don’t want to cause any trouble.” “Judd’s death was an accident, and I’m sorry.” Roger hadn’t seen any sign of remorse in the girl for what had just happened in the room. After carefully inquiring about the specific time and details and confirming there were no omissions, Roger took down Danielle’s contact information then turned and left. Before he had gone far, sounds of intense fighting once again came from the room. Roger frowned, feeling that something was off, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it. “Judd’s death was an accident, that Allen was either drunk or on something, mostly an accident too, and as for the fourth victim, Jonathan.” “Though his death seems the closest to a supernatural event, that legend about Crystal Lake is full of holes. The most abnormal-looking cases are often the most normal.” Roger drove away from Danielle’s house, not returning to town, but heading deep into the swamp. Among the four victims, information about Travis, the second victim, was the scarcest. He was an African American, living in a predominantly black area far from the town center. When the town center police detectives went to investigate, Travis’s family was completely uncooperative. They seemed to have little reaction to Travis’s death. After several unsuccessful negotiations, Travis’s death was deemed accidental. Once his family signed the documents, the case was hastily closed. Roger was now heading to Travis’s house. Truth be told, he was also troubled by such small, extremely insular communities, and he wasn’t even sure if his credentials would be of any use there. The weather in Swamp Town today was fairly good, the sky was overcast with heavy clouds, but at least the sun was visible. Roger’s car entered the black community area. He drove slowly, and along the way, he could clearly feel the residents’ scrutiny of his outsider vehicle. After parking the car, Roger pressed the doorbell. Footsteps were heard inside the room, and soon a middle-aged woman’s indifferent voice came through. “We don’t welcome people like you around here!” Roger took out his credentials, following procedure and identifying himself. It took a while before the door finally opened. A slightly overweight middle-aged woman stood at the doorway, scrutinizing Roger with a measured gaze. After confirming multiple times, she finally let Roger into the house. “I’ve already said all I can say. What else do you want to ask?” The woman’s attitude couldn’t be described as merely indifferent anymore. It was as if Roger’s arrival had disrupted some kind of calm. His eyes quickly scanned the room. Roger managed a smile, “No need to be , think of this as a conversation between friends.” “Friends?” The middle-aged woman’s face remained taut. “My colleague’s daughter is very good friends with a girl who lives here. Just over a week ago, she came here for a visit.” Roger had heard bits and pieces from Amanda and knew that Betty lived here. Now, without any other options, he could only try to establish a connection. “That red-haired girl?” The middle-aged woman paused, her expression easing slightly. There were rarely any outsiders here, and even fewer were white. Betty had once taken Amanda around the area, her distinctive red hair leaving an impression on many people. Roger’s eyes brightened. “Her friend is named Betty, do you know her?” Upon hearing this name, the expression on the middle-aged woman’s face changed drastically, the frost on her face instantly disintegrating. “Are you her friends?” The woman’s attitude changed greatly after hearing Roger call out Betty’s name. “So, I said this is just a conversation among friends.” Roger followed up adroitly. “As for Travis, there is nothing left to investigate. The Prophet has given me a revelation; Travis has returned to the embrace of the Lord.” “This is the best destiny for him.” Speaking of her son’s death, the middle-aged woman actually smiled gently. This strange state alarmed Roger. Near the living room wall hung a photo. Roger took it and exclaimed, “He was a handsome young man.” The woman nodded, “Travis was always outstanding, both in academics and other aspects. That’s why he was chosen.” There was not a trace of sadness in her tone, leaving Roger unsure how to continue the conversation. “Looking back now, before Travis died, he must have received some sort of revelation. He seemed very excited for a while, with a bit of nervousness.” The middle-aged woman suddenly mentioned. “When was that?” Roger asked. “It’s been a while, just before he died. I thought then it was because he had a girlfriend.” The woman laughed at herself, “Looking back, it was shallow thinking. He must have been Summoned.” “He had a girlfriend at that time?” The middle-aged woman nodded. “A girl named Danielle.” “I found out by secretly looking through his phone.” Roger was slightly startled. The middle-aged woman looked puzzled. “A month ago, maybe.” Roger quickly calculated the time. “At that time, Judd was still alive; if it’s not a common name, then this Danielle was playing two sides at once!” Roger had a headache. “Could this truly be a common accident, or a crime of passion?” But looking at the eerie expression on the woman’s face across from him, Roger couldn’t even tell if she was mentally unstable or genuinely indifferent about her son’s death. “This Danielle is indeed suspicious.” Having reached this point in the investigation, Roger didn’t even know if he should continue; he remembered what Henrik had once told him. “We are Demon Hunters, not police officers.” He rubbed his forehead. “Continue the investigation, maybe there is an unknown truth hidden within.” Roger sighed. If he ended things hastily now, the mission from the Hunters Guild would probably remain unaccomplished.
