You're That Girl Chapter 28

I smile to myself when I see men/boys underestimating the power of women/girls. Wish they know their signing their own death warrants. –Cinmisola. To be totally honest to God and myself, I didn't think Chidi's suggestion was all that bad, I mean who was I kidding? I sure didn't want to go to the damned birthday alone. But what i didn't fancy was how happy, Lara began to look after the suggestion. I'm like, "what's wrong with our girls these days, why do they drop all their guards at the feet of guys they just met? What happened to waiting for a year before catching feels?" Something inside me was calling me an hypocrite, but I didn't know why, maybe I knew why, but I sure wasn't all over March at first sight! In fact, I am proud to say I'm still not all over him, I just don't find the idea of the both of us as dates bad, and which girl, (especially in Nigeria) doesn't want a fine bobo to be interested in her? I gave Lara a look that I was sure she didn't care enough to get; she was too smitten by Chidi. "So what do you think, Remi?" Chidi asked, passing March a knowing look. March on the other hand was clearly interested in the topic even if he had less to say. He just kept flaunting his dimples. "I'm cool with it if March is." I heard myself say. "I'm sure he can never be un-cool with it even if he tried" the quiet girl sneered. "So did anyone bring a present for the birthday girl?" the annoying girl asked and just before anyone could reply, Sin Su announced our arrival with a funny but exotic accent The first two words that came into my mind at the decorations of the exterior part of the building was "red carpet" Whoever decorated and organized the birthday definitely had Oscar awards in mind. The only thing missing was the heavy paparazzi lot, although you could see more than 5 different photographers lurking the exterior part of the building. "Isn't this just too much?" the annoying girl asked and I couldn't agree more with her. "Someone clearly forgot that this is Nigeria and not some Korean cliché movie" I said. "Let's just enjoy their waste of financial resources. She sure killed the Cinderella ball theme" March said and grabbed my hands as we both walked the blood red carpet that led to the entrance. Emem surely went all out for this party, I mean, you could see good looking men and women dressed in uniforms with glasses of champagne balanced on a hand from the see through gate. A man asked for our invites and we all produced it. He raised a brow at March's female friends but still let us in. "I thought he wasn't going to let you both in" Chidi joked as we got in. From the look of things, Emem got more than a Cinderella ball, this one looked grander. If I thought the exterior decoration was everything, I sure was crazy because as the waiter or whatever, ushered us into main building, I felt numb at the sight of wealth. I could hardly recognize most of my school mate, everyone went all out for this party and by the way they jumped and bumped to Wizkid, you could just jump to the conclusion that Jax's death was long forgotten......how annoying. By the time I turned my back, I found Chidi and Lara joining the crowd, the other two girls were nowhere to be found. For a moment, I hoped Lara and Tomison hadn't forgotten our original motive for attending "you want to dance?" March whispered into my ears. Whats wrong with these people? This isn't an American movie? Here in NAIJA, we just dance. You don't have to ask. But I nodded anyway and started hitting my shaku shaku to Wizkid's Soco. At first it was weird dancing with my heavy dress and four inch heel, but you never know what the power of music can do to you. Before I knew it, March was behind me, wrapping his hands around my waist. At first it felt good, then I remembered where and who I was and immediately broke the dance with another dance step. If he knew what I did, he didn't show it, he just danced to the rhythm with me. I couldn't help but admire how free and happy he looked when he was dancing. We stopped to grab something to eat and it was then that I realized how careless I'd been, dancing and losing track of time. To think I judged everyone "Hey, I have to go find my brother and Tomison" "Your brother is here, Again?" What does he mean by 'Again?' "What do you mean by 'Again'?" "Wasn't he with you at the other party?" Oh, yeah. I smiled. "Let's just say that's his way of looking out for me" "lemme guess, another big bro that thinks his sis is still a small girl?" March teased. I gave his an "I know right" look. "Then I'll go with you, it's not like I've got anything to do around here" "Are you sure? You've been with me for a while now, what about your friends?" "Trust me, they don't care. Let's go." He said and pulled my hands. I wasn't going to deny the fact that I liked that he offered to help me search for Rotimi and Tomison. I couldn't imagine searching everywhere and nowhere for people that didn't want to be found. As we moved from doors to pillars I couldn't help but wonder why whoever did the decoration liked the color red. Almost everything had red on it. We sighted Emem and I insisted that we say 'happy birthday to her. She was putting on a beautiful red and white outfit that looked more of a valentine outfit than a party outfit. But it was beautiful anyway. After wishing her a happy birthday and giving her a quick weird hug, I heard a familiar girly voice sing, "well, well, well. Look who came after all." Aisha.
