The call came that afternoon and it took everything in Van to muster up the courage to hold back from running to his bedside.
"How is he?"
"He's doing okay now, he managed to get out of the accident with minimal injuries."
"Thank God." relief flooded her as she clasped her Rella's hand.
They were at the hospital's reception area along with his friends. Jake had gotten himself into an accident after he left her place that morning, she'd been beside herself with worry and guilt that maybe she drove him to it with her harsh words but Rella had insisted that it wasn't her fault at all , her friend was equally furious with him after learning the truth.
Van was bouncing on her heels restlessly holding back because she knew that if she saw Jake in the current condition he's in, she'd be tempted to stay by his side even though she wouldn't be able to forgive him for what he's done which would be unfair to them both.
The wound was still fresh and she couldn't risk having it cut deeper so she made a decision for the both of them.
Van took off her wedding ring and handed it to Rella with tears in her eyes.
"Please give it him when he wakes up."
"Are you sure about this?" Rella asked. Van knew that wouldn't change the fact that they were married to each other she simply needed to think and decide whether she wants her future to include Jake Calloway.
"I'm sure."
"This must be really hard for you. I can't believe that he would so such a thing to someone as kindhearted as you."
" I just need some moment apart to be able to piece back my shattered heart. I'm leaving the city. "
" What? Where will you go.. I mean this so sudden. "
" I know someone who owes me a favour." Van said simply. " I'll just call you when I've settled down."
"I'm going to miss you. " Rella sniffed and pulled her friend in a tight embrace.
When Van informed Karl of her plans he didn't have any objections.
"Whatever you think is best for you right now is what we'll do." He told her.
The next day, Stefan and Rella brought a town car and a driver to take Van and Karl wherever they were going and once they were all set saying goodbye was the hardest part.
"You could come visit, as soon we find a place of course." Van tried to smile through her tears.
"You know that would not be the same as seeing you everyday." Van nodded in underding.
The two friends held onto each other and cried their goodbyes. When they pulled apart Stefan was immediately at his wife's side holding her affectionately as she cried.
Van envied that. That was something she wished he had.
"If you need anything, and I mean anything at all don't hesitate to call okay?" Stefan said.
Karl was the one who nodded and shook hands with Stefan. "Thanks."
Van kept her eyes glued to the rear view mirror at the couple who were obviously in love as they wrapped their arms around each other, she was glad and jealous at the same time that Rella seemed to have found her happily ever after.
