Switch in Chapter 75

…Dickinson pov… Emile and I approached the old Chinese man pulling the cart, I couldn't help but feel nervous. What if my guess was wrong? What if I sounded stupid? I smiled awkwardly, hoping that my apprehension wouldn't show. "Good morning, sir," I said, trying to sound confident. The old man looked at us both and then smiled widely. I was puzzled by his smile. Did he understand what I was trying to say? Or was he simply amused by my attempt at speaking his language? "You can leave it to us," Emily said, her voice more assured than mine. The old man nodded and handed over the cart to us. I noticed his broad smile and the crinkles at the corners of his eyes. He had a friendly face, with prominent cheekbones and a thick mop of gray hair. His skin was tanned and weathered, suggesting that he had spent a lot of time outside. "You two came back," the man laughed and shook his head as he reached into his pockets for the key. I felt a sense of relief that we had found the right person. "Sir," I began, my mind racing with questions. "You want to switch back?" the man said, interrupting my thoughts as he pushed open the door. I nodded, feeling grateful that he understood what we needed. Emily and I followed him into the restaurant. Emily and I exchanged a quick glance as the old Chinese man gestured for us to follow him. Emily took the handle of the cart and began to pull it behind her as we followed the man inside. The tables were set with red tablecloths and each had a vase filled with small flowers. The air was filled with the aroma of incense and the man put on music and the sound of traditional Chinese music playing softly in the background. Despite the restaurant's small size, the interior was cozy and welcoming. The man settled into a chair and looked at us expectantly. I felt a sense of apprehension as I wondered what he wanted from us. Was he going to ask for money? Or did he need help with something? "Can I help you with something, sir?" I asked politely, trying to gauge his intentions. The man smiled at me kindly and shook his head. "No, no. I just wanted to share some food with you," he said, motioning towards the cart. I felt a sense of relief wash over me as he gestured towards the supplies in the cart. I had been worried that he might be in need of something more serious. "Thank you, sir," Emily said, smiling gratefully. The man nodded and began to unpack the supplies, handing us each a piece of fruit and a small package of nutsI looked at the old Chinese man, feeling a sense of confusion. "The paper...this is what it meant by 'I wish I was you'?" I asked, trying to make sense of the situation. The man nodded, his kind smile still firmly in place. "Yes, that's what it means. When I saw you both, I knew immediately that's what happened." I felt a sense of awe wash over me. How could he have known just by looking at us? It all seemed so surreal. "But the thing is," the man continued, "even without meeting me, when you two are able to understand yourselves, you will be able to switch back." I glanced over at Emily, who looked just as puzzled as I felt. "Understand?" she muttered, her brow furrowed in confusion. "What?" I asked, turning back to the old Chinese man. He leaned forward, his eyes twinkling with a wisdom that seemed to transcend language barriers. "To understand yourselves. To truly know who you are and what you want in life. When you are able to do that, you will be able to switch back." I felt a sense of enlightenment wash over me. It made sense. Perhaps our desire to switch bodies was a reflection of our inner turmoil and confusion. If we could learn to understand ourselves, we might be able to find our way back to our own bodies Emily suddenly spoke up, her voice hesitant. "Dickinson, can we talk?"I turned to face her, feeling a sense of apprehension. We had been avoiding talking about our situation for fear of making things worse. But maybe it was time to face the truth. "Sure," I said, my voice low. Emily took a deep breath before continuing. "I have been able to understand some things about you, Dickinson," she said, her voice gentle. "This whole thing is not your fault. You didn't necessarily mean to get me by all means, and you were trapped in a loveless situation. I misjudged you." I felt a wave of emotion wash over me as I listened to her words. It was true. I had never meant for any of this to happen. But still, the guilt of my actions weighed heavily on me. "I'm sorry," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I never meant for any of this to happen." Emily reached out and took my hand, her touch gentle and reassuring. "I know," she said softly. "And I forgive you." I felt a sense of relief wash over me as I looked into her kind eyes. For the first time since this whole ordeal had started Emile and I hugged each other tightly, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. It was like a heavy burden had been lifted off my shoulders, and I could finally breathe again. "I can't wait," I said, my voice filled with excitement. Emile chuckled, tears at the corner of her eyes. "Me too," she said, leaning in to kiss me. I stared at Emile as I wiped her eyes. "I had also been too forceful and wanted you to accept this and be the carrier of my child and now I have seen it is not how easy it seems to me. I need your genuine consent". I looked down at my stomach, still feeling a bit uneasy about being in someone else's body. But I knew that it was a small price to pay for the chance to return to my own life. "Are you sure about this?" I asked Emile, needing to hear her answer before we proceeded. She chuckled softly, tears glistening in the corners of her eyes. "Yes," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I accept carrying your baby, no regrets. Tears trickled down her eyes. "I want to switch back. I miss my own life, my own body." She said, I nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude for having Emile as my partner in this strange journey. We hugged and kissed each other. It was weird since we were kissing our bodies, but I could feel a sense of closeness and understanding between. We were interrupted by a cough from the old Chinese man. "What next now?" I asked, turning to face him. "Just like before," he said, his voice calm. "You both go home, and the next morning, you will be back. You have to be asleep by 12am, both of you." "Thank you very much, sir," Emile and I chorused. "You are welcome," the old man said with a small smile. Emile turned to me, her eyes shining. "Dickinson," she said softly. "I know this whole thing has been difficult, but I just want you to know that I am here for you. No matter what happens." I felt a lump form in my throat as I looked into her kind eyes. "Thank you," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. Emile spoke up again. "You know," she said, her voice playful. "I never thought I would be living someone else's life. It's kind of exciting, don't you think?" I chuckled, feeling a sense of lightness fill me. "Yeah, it is," I said, my voice filled with amusement. I looked at Emile, I couldn't help but feel a sense of relief wash over me. It was comforting to know that we were on the same page and that we both wanted to switch back. As we made our way back to our respective homes, I felt a sense of anticipation build within me. I couldn't wait to see what the next day would bring. As I lay on the bed, I couldn't help but feel a sense of restlessness. My mind was filled with all sorts of thoughts and anxieties, and try as I might, I couldn't seem to calm myself down. I turned to look at the clock, and my heart skipped a beat when I saw that it was already 11 pm. I knew I had to be asleep by 12 am if I wanted to switch back with Emile, but sleep seemed like an impossible task at the moment. I rolled over on the bed, pulling the bedspread tightly around me. I couldn't deny that this body was comfortable and familiar, and it was hard to imagine going back to my own. But I knew that I had to do it. I couldn't stay trapped in someone else's body forever. I had to find a way to switch back and reclaim my own life. Taking one last look at the body I was currently occupying, I closed my eyes and willed myself to sleep. It was the only way to make sure that I could switch back and continue living my life. This experience was heart wrenching as well as intriguing. As I woke up, groggy and disoriented, I felt a wave of relief wash over me. I had made it back to my own body. I sat up and looked around, taking in my surroundings. It felt so good to be home. I got up and went over to the mirror, smiling at my reflection. "I missed you, buddy," I said, feeling a sense of gratitude for my own body. But my joy was short-lived. When I tried to call Emile, the number wasn't going through. I tried again, but still got the same result. Panic started to set in as I wondered what was going on. My mind raced with possibilities. Has something happened to Emile? Was she okay? Or was it something else entirely? I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. I decided to try again later, hoping that it was just a temporary issue. But as I went about my day, I couldn't shake the feeling of unease that lingered within me. All I could do was wait and hope that everything was okay.
