Agatha’s POV
I was on my way home after renewing my driver’s license. But on my way back, I stumbled upon Mr. Adam.
And now… I AM RUNNING.
‘Damn it.’
I was caught in a fight and had no choice but to run with Mr. Adam. Unfortunately, I was the slowest runner of us, and so Adam and I fell behind.
"Hey! Run as fast as possible if you want to live!" Adam chuckled, tightening his grip on my hand.
He’s laughing?
How can he laugh even at this moment?
"I really wanted to!" I replied while doing my best to catch up with his speed. "But my legs are fucking shorter than y… Ahh!”
'Sh*t! I stumbled and left a pair of my shoes behind!'
"My shoe!"
I was about to go back but it was too late. The chasers were a few meters away so getting my shoe wasn't the option anymore.
"Forget about it! Let's go!" Adam held me again and pulled me until we reached near the police station.
When the pursuers saw where we stopped, they didn’t chase us anymore.
Adam and I were catching our breaths as we looked at them with heavy sweat. I even had to bend down and lean my weight on my knees because I was so exhausted. Heat rushed to my skin and my heart was pounding non-stop.
“What is this all about?” a police officer asked.
“Nothing, Sir!” the chaser replied. “We’re going now.”
Before they left, they warned Adam with a thumb slashing on neck.
As an answer, Adam sent them a middle finger.
‘They look like high school students who love to fight. Geez.’
Of course, knowing how Adam’s business works, I have no doubts that this is a serious and life-threatening case.
‘I survived again.’
"You can't go back and get your shoes," Adam, who's still breathing so hard, said.
That was him, saying that I had to walk barefoot on the way to the condominium.
I looked back at my feet and wondered how to walk with only one shoe.
‘Should I call for a taxi?’
‘But taxi fare is expensive.’
“It was my fault that you had to lose your shoe,” Adam said.
I glared back at him. “If I need to elaborate on how I ended here, I should say it was your fault that I had to run away from those mobsters.”
Adam laughed.
‘What’s funny?!’
“Yeah. Yeah. But you must admit that I save your life.”
“Which part? If you didn’t call me to that alley, I didn’t need to experience that.”
Adam showed me his index finger and waved it left and right.
“You’re wrong, Monica.”
Monica?
Whom is he calling Moni…
Ahhh. I remembered. He helped me last time by pretending as my boyfriend and calling me “Monica.”
“I am a loan shark owner,” Mr. Adam said before he knelt in front of me.
Stunned, I stepped back but Adam firmly held my feet.
“But those guys are real mobsters. If they see a lady like you walking alone, they might make fun of you,” he added, removing my remaining shoe.
Adam took off his shoes and placed them near my feet.
He stood up and met my gaze.
“So, you are indebted to me once again. For the candy and for today.” He reached out his hand as if asking me to pay him. “How much will you pay?”
I stared at his palm.
I really hate to think that I am indebted to Mr. Adam again and that I don’t know how to repay him.
‘In the beginning, I never asked him to help me.’
Looking back at him, I said what’s on my mind.
“How much do you…”
But I couldn’t finish what I was about to ask because Mr. Adam suddenly leaned closer and pecked my forehead.
“…”
“…”
The part where he kissed felt so hot, I brought my cold hand upward to caress my forehead.
What the hell!
Did he just kiss my forehead?
“That is for the candy,” he said, smiling.
As he smiled, his dimples showed. Oddly, I never saw him smiling sincerely, not until today.
“I will get the payment for saving your life next time. Be prepared, Ms. Agatha.”
He turned around, shoving one hand inside his pocket and the other one holding my remaining shoe. Mr. Adam walked away barefooted.
“Wear my shoes on your way home! See you!”
He waved his hand and disappeared from my sight.
Slowly, I looked down and stared at the shoes he left for me.
I wanted to believe that Mr. Adam has a good heart deep within him. But when I recalled the time he kissed my forehead, I eradicated all useless thoughts.
