Chapter 519: Chapter 519: Sincerity Wasted on a Dog
Lu Yi sneered coldly at Pei Yansi, then his smile faded as he yanked Lu Yi’s hand away and straightened his crumpled collar.
Upon close observation, Pei Yansi noticed that Lu Yi seemed like a different person entirely, with his manner of speaking, expressions, and tone all so alien, so far removed from the cultured and gentle Pei Yansi of the past.
“What right do you have to hurt Shen Heyu, huh? Don’t tell me you think that meaningless marriage certificate gives you the legal right to harm her?” Pei Yansi glared at Lu Yi, eyes blazing as though they would reduce him to ashes.
“Just as you said, we are legally married, and no matter what disputes we have, they’re family matters. You, an outsider, have no right to interfere. I’d advise you to keep out of it, and stay where it’s cool—don’t get in the way here.”
Lu Yi glared back at Pei Yansi dissatisfied, and as their gazes locked, it was almost as if you could hear the crackling sparks flying between them. Standing to the side, Shen Heyu involuntarily held her breath, feeling her hands and feet turn icy cold.
“You bastard, what did you just say? You’re asking for a beating! Go on, say that again. As long as I’m alive, and as long as I breathe, I’ll never let anyone harm a single hair on Shen Heyu’s head.”
Pei Yansi’s rage manifested in a clenched fist, ready to fly towards Lu Yi. Lu Yi made no move to dodge, simply standing there and smiling at Pei Yansi. That smile struck a nerve, and Pei Yansi’s punch didn’t hold back, sending Lu Yi tumbling to the ground.
It was a fierce punch indeed; Lu Yi’s corner of the mouth split and blood began to flow, the coppery taste spreading through his mouth.
But Lu Yi just lightly lifted a hand to wipe the blood from his mouth and stood up again. Before he could find his footing, Pei Yansi charged at him once more, ready to knock him to the ground with another punch.
This time, Lu Yi did not simply take the punch. Instead, he looked coldly into Pei Yansi’s eyes, “If you don’t want Shen Heyu to suffer, I’d advise against laying a hand on me.”
As he spoke, Pei Yansi’s swinging fist stopped just one centimeter away from Lu Yi’s nose.
He furrowed his brows deeply, “What did you just say? You dare to threaten me with Shen Heyu’s safety? Lu Yi, you really aren’t human. When you were so passionately pursuing Shen Heyu, I thought you were genuine, but it turns out it was just a show all along, just for appearances.”
Lu Yi knew as long as Shen Heyu was within his grasp, Pei Yansi wouldn’t dare hurt her.
He raised his hand and pushed away Pei Yansi’s fist that loomed before his nose, clearing the obstacle blocking his view straight into Pei Yansi’s eyes.
“How do you know I wasn’t sincere with Shen Heyu back then? I would’ve dug out my heart to offer it to Shen Heyu if I could, but what about her? She would’ve sooner fed my heart to dogs.”
Lu Yi’s eyes blazed with a fiery rage as he spoke of this affair, and recalling the time he spent by Shen Heyu’s side, he now wished he could strangle his former self.
Shen Heyu stood rooted to the spot, trembling with disbelief as she denied, “Lu Yi, I never once betrayed your sincerity in the past. I was seriously considering our relationship. If you hadn’t done those outrageous things later on, perhaps by now we would have already achieved a happy ending. Have you ever thought about that?”
Shen Heyu thought her words would calm Lu Yi’s emotions, but instead, they ignited an even fiercer response. He roared loudly at Shen Heyu.
“At this point, do you think I’d still fall for your deception? How good was I to both you and your daughter Yuexue? Didn’t you see it all? But how did you treat me? I repeatedly risked my life for both of you, but what did I get in return?”
“What I received was your disdain and neglect. No matter how good I was to you and Yuexue, no matter how earnestly and wholeheartedly I treated you, you never looked up to me. You never even had a place for me in your heart because you couldn’t forget that person who repeatedly hurt you.”
Lu Yi, fuming with anger, raised his hand and pointed at Pei Yansi’s nose, though his gaze was fixed firmly on Shen Heyu.
Even if he had allied with Chen Wenzhou and done many things against his initial intentions, he still harbored hope for Shen Heyu, wishing that one day she would warm to the things he did for her.
But Shen Heyu’s heart was like stone and couldn’t be warmed, at least not by him. At night, when Shen Heyu had nightmares, it was Pei Yansi’s name she called out. In her dreams, she pleaded with Pei Yansi not to leave her time and again.
In her heart and subconscious, no matter what Lu Yi did or how much he gave, she never noticed. If that was so, why should Lu Yi keep foolishly following her as he used to?
The way he used to try pleasing Shen Heyu and win her affection was useless; she would never accept him or willingly stay by his side.
It was Lu Yi’s collaboration with Chen Wenzhou, through coercion and enticement, that could make Shen Heyu walk away from Pei Yansi’s side and step by step come towards him. That was the Lu Yi that Lu Yi wanted. Once Lu Yi tasted a bit of sweetness, he would become unstoppable.
“Lu Yi, do you even realize what you’re saying? Have you been drinking tonight?” Upon hearing Lu Yi’s words, Shen Heyu gasped for air. If Pei Yansi heard this and insisted on pestering her, refusing to marry Chen Lingmeng, what would she do? Yuexue was still in the hospital, waiting for the lifesaving antidote.
Shen Heyu’s gaze was severe and icy as she stared at Lu Yi. Of course, Lu Yi knew he had let something slip, but he carelessly tugged at the corner of his mouth. He wanted to laugh, yet it came out as a ludicrous smile.
The words had struck home in Pei Yansi. Pei Yansi turned his head and gazed deeply at Shen Heyu, “Heyu, is what he said true? Have you always had a place for me in your heart, and you never forgot me, right?”
“Don’t fool yourself. Shen Heyu has never loved you. She just wants to escape from you, to get as far away from you as possible. The words I just said were nothing but spoken in anger!” Lu Yi yelled loudly at Pei Yansi.
