Cursed System Chapter 91

OGE POV... I called out to my little brother, asking if we could just walk for a while, because the fear of secrets, death, and a future without the people I loved had become too much to bear, and as I stared into the darkness where he stood, six crimson points slowly emerged, expanding until they became his glowing eyes, watching over me in silence. "Little brother... can we just walk for now?" I asked softly into the darkness, my voice trembling despite how hard I tried to steady it, because everything I had heard—about being a Banshee, about secrets that could kill, about futures where I might never grow old with the man I loved or watch my own children grow—had piled up inside my chest until breathing itself felt painful, and standing alone in that subtle, unfamiliar darkness without anyone close enough to reach made the loneliness claw at me even harder. For a moment, the forest didn’t answer me—then six faint crimson dots appeared ahead, hovering like distant stars swallowed by night, slowly expanding until they became my brother’s eyes, glowing vividly as he stepped forward, and as I watched him approach, I could somehow feel that he understood, at least a little, how shattered I felt inside, how I was desperately trying to accept that I would never again be the same girl I had been just days ago, and even though his steps never faltered, I knew this was a battle he couldn’t fight for me. "Sure, sister," he said gently, careful with his tone, as if afraid even his voice might break me, "but we can’t stray too far from here." We began walking through the forest together, and as we moved, I noticed the faint orange glow around my own pupils reflected in the shadows, flickering like fireflies, while the crimson in his three pairs of eyes felt sharp and dangerous in comparison, and when I glanced at him, the absurd contrast between us struck me so suddenly that laughter burst out of my chest before I could stop it. He turned toward me, confused. "What’s wrong with my face?" "Oh, nothing," I said between quiet breaths, trying to suppress my laughter. "I was just thinking about how terrifying your eyes are... you could scare anyone sh*tless with just one glare." After that, silence fell again, thick and awkward, filled only with the sound of rustling leaves and distant birds, and I could almost feel my brother’s discomfort growing beside me, the quiet stretching longer than either of us expected, until I realized just how heavy my thoughts still were, how they refused to loosen their grip no matter how far my feet carried me. "Little brother..." I finally asked, turning to look at him, "are we still humans—or are we just monsters now?" He answered without hesitation, his voice firm despite the strain beneath it. "Of course we’re still humans. Being human isn’t about how you look—it’s about what you do, about your heart." His answer helped, but only a little, because confusion still churned inside me, and I found myself asking again, more helplessly this time, "I don’t know what to do anymore... what do you think I should do now?" "I don’t really know either," he admitted hoarsely, and somehow that honesty hurt more than false reassurance ever could. As we slowed our steps, another question escaped me, darker and heavier than the last. "Is it really right... to kill someone just because they learn a secret?" "No," he said after a sigh, "but some situations are bigger than what normal humans can handle," and then he told me the truth of his own past, of how he never had a choice, of how power and pain had reshaped him together, and how even a good-hearted stranger wasn’t worth risking the lives of our family, not when the price could be everyone we loved turning to ash for the sake of someone who might never even understand the sacrifice. When I asked him whether longevity or power was better, my voice shook, because the thought of living long only to be alone terrified me more than death itself, and as I spoke, I felt tears gathering behind my eyes, ready to fall, only for him to look at me with a resolve so strong it almost burned. "I don’t know about the future," he said, "but I do know this—I’ll protect our family. No matter what. I won’t let any of you face this alone." Those words stayed with me. Days passed after that, blending together as my brother patiently taught me the basics of my abilities, guiding me whenever confusion threatened to overwhelm me again, helping me understand how skills responded to intent and words, how power flowed even when my attributes lagged behind, and though there were limits, he never seemed worried, already planning ways to strengthen me when the time came. A month slipped by almost unnoticed, and little by little, I began to grasp what it meant to be a Banshee, while my brother grew busier, stronger, even celebrating his fifth birthday amid all this chaos, his strange life moving forward as if danger were just another part of routine, and as night finally settled over the world once more, I realized that even though fear still lingered in my heart, I was no longer facing it alone.
