The Remaining Days Chapter 7

~A week later~ "But she was fine yesterday!" I yelled at the doctor. "Miss, please let me explain," the doctor tried to cut in but I wasn't done with my rampage. Aunt Amy's soft sobs and cries were faint compared to my loud and panicked yells. "Yes, explain to me how in the world can one fall into a coma and is in the brink of death when she was talking yesterday. Explain to me how you can let this happen. Explain to me how you could live with yourself while you know that whilst you missed a detail during a treatment, you might have brought a whole family grief beyond measure?!" I yelled once more, in the brink of tears. "You can't loose her. You can't-" My words were swallowed by my sobs and I felt arms on me and bring me to a chest. I buried my face in the warm chest, "Irene.. They can't loose her." "I am deeply sorry ma'am. But there is nothing we can do. It all lies on Irene now," was the doctor simple reply and I turned to glare at him. "Of course she has to fight this battle alone! If it weren't for you, she would wake up every day and we could've helped her!" I shouted. I was making a scene in the hall but can you blame me though? I walked in the hospital this morning, expecting to meet my best friend's cheery smile and hearing fandom jokes but faced a doctor filled with remorse telling me that he missed something during the therapy he did on her and it has been spreading without his knowledge and now, she's in a coma. I've spent an hour yelling myself hoarse and Zac and Julian has tried everything to console me. "I'm deeply sorry ma'am but it is not of my ability to help her in this state," he tried to speak calmly. Usually, I would've felt bad of making someone feel so guilty and putting the blame on them but I couldn't afford to think about it when my best friend could be seconds away from death. I turned and walked to Irene's room, away from everyone. I pushed the door open and it feels so weird now that she's not greeting me like she always does. I walked silently to the stool beside the bed and sat there, holding her pale hand. I stared at her face, her eyes were closed and there is that small nagging voice in the back of my mind that one day, I wouldn't be able to see those light brown orbs that seem to twinkle with mischief ever again. I stuffed my mouth with my knuckles to contain the sobs at the back of my throat as tears started to stream down my cheeks and I start to cry silently. The door opened to reveal Julian. "Hey," he greeted but his voice seemed to contain no joy like it used to and in that second, it seemed like Irene's fall has taken a toll on all of us. "Shh, she'll make it. She's a tough one and she won't leave you without a goodbye." He tried to calm the tears but his words made more tears pour from my eyes and soon it was freaking niagara falls. "But she did." I whispered softly between my sobs and sniffles. "What?" He asked, bending forward to hear me clearer. I looked at her unconscious form. "She did say goodbye. When we were thirteen, our school invited these people and they asked us to make eulogies and after the event, we made eulogies for each other. She did say goodbye, years ago." I explained softly as I tried to stop my tears. I could feel him hugging me, "Shh, she won't want you to cry over this though." He scolded me weakly but I nodded. He was right. Irene kept on saying that she wouldn't want me to cry if she pass and she wanted me to live my life to the fullest. But she isn't gone yet. She's still here. Just unconscious. It was wishful thinking but with that thought in mind, I wiped my tears dry and hugged Ju-ju back. "Thanks, Ju-ju." I told him, smiling weakly and he returned a similar one as I looked at Irene's form once more before exiting the room and walking to the lounge where the others were. "Let's get something to eat," I announced and they all stood up except for Irene's parents. "You go, dear. We'll stay here in case she wakes up anytime soon." Aunt Amy forced a smile. I frowned at that, "Are you sure, Auntie? Do you want me to get you anything?" I offered but she smiled and shook her head, "Well if you say so.." I trailed off. "Don't worry Kylie, take a break. We'll call you if anything happens." Uncle Sean soothed and I could only nod. "Alright then.." I trailed off. The guys and I all filed into the car with Zac driving, "That reminds me, hey Zac?" I asked from the backseat, playing with Benny. "Yea?" "Where are your parents?" I asked with a frown. They were there that night when Irene fainted and they visited Irene yesterday but other than that, they're not around much. "They're business people so they aren't around that much. I take care of Benny with the help of these goof balls." He replied while Benny jumped onto my lap, playing with my fingers and making train noises. I smiled at him and ruffled his hair gaining a frown from him before he patted his hair. I awed silently, they grow up so fast. We drove to the mall to eat in the foodcourt and just take a break from everything but somehow, I can't help but feel that something is missing. I rarely do something without Irene. I sighed. Please Irene, get better. I don't know what I'd do without that girl.
