Chapter 92
His phone started ringing again before he could say anything more as he leaned closer to me and grinned gratefully against my lips.
With a moan, he placed his forehead into mine, lifted his hand from my waist, and cast a frustrated glance down at his watch.
I nodded to myself, "I have to take this," as I started to move away from him and felt the heat of his body leave my body.
When he stood up from his chair and crossed the room once more, grabbing his phone from his desk and taking the call, he appeared irate.
I watched him from the couch while feeling increasingly guilty. My thoughts were a jumble of disconnected, poorly thought-out lines, and my instincts were contradicting each other. I knew that telling him the truth about me would break him, but since he was going to find out eventually, it would be best if I told him straight.
No matter the price, no matter the outcome…
He was speaking with an unidentified accent to another alpha from a pack.
With all that was being revealed to me, I couldn't help but feel as though I was overlooking a crucial piece of knowledge that was there in front of my nose.
I got off his sofa and started to walk around his office, feeling his eyes following me at all times. I touched the bookshelves with my fingers, took a moment to stand by his side and gaze out the arched window together, and then I went to his desk.
Everything had been removed from it except for the map that was placed on top of it; it had been drawn on and had several information marks on it. Some sections had very little ink, while others had so much ink that the paper underneath was completely destroyed.
I made an effort to understand it, but it didn't help as I didn't understand the meaning of the markings. I was concentrating so much on the map on the paper that I didn't notice he was done talking until he was behind me. My fingers skimmed over the surface.
I gasped as his body pressed against mine.
"I've been tracking the appearances of the feral rogues as best as I can over the past couple of weeks, trying to see if I could figure out a pattern—except there's no fucking pattern, so I've wasted my time." He pressed his body against mine, trapping me between the edge of his desk and him, and my fingers ran over the markings once more.
Although this map appeared chaotic to the naked eye, I was able to understand its basic structure when I repeatedly ran my fingertips over the paper, feeling as though someone were whispering its meaning to me.
It couldn't be a coincidence that the rogues were turning feral.
I was filled with irritation even though the solution was right in front of me; it was like a word on the tip of my tongue.
"Seems like they're searching for something," I said, running my fingertips over an area of writing that was dense. "They gather their numbers in one place, and then they seem to disperse." I made a motion with my fingertips, something that seemed right in my gut, but what could they possibly be searching for?
Derrick's hands moved to curl over the edge of the table on each side of me as his head leaned up against my shoulder. He was mentally mulling over my notion and considering its viability. I felt tense from the weight of his body against mine, yet I wanted to lean on him because of how close we were.
"This is why you are my queen." I smiled at his foolish remarks as he whispered in wonder. "Morgan and I have been looking at this for weeks, and you come and solve it all with your genius little brain." His words of pride didn't feel right, especially considering that I was about to ruin his admiration for me with just three fateful words.
His lips were pressing against the side of my neck, creating a line of kisses against my skin while I mumbled, "Stop it," under my breath. I leaned forward and flattened my hands on the map, attempting to regain my balance.
"We just need to figure out what they're looking for." In between his displays of adoration for me, he remarked. I was unable to concentrate as he made temporary indentations into my flesh while sucking.
He struck a lovely spot, and I gasped.
I had promised him that I would not give in to him until I had told him everything that needed to be said.
I gritted my teeth and steadied myself, fighting against the increasing desire that was inside of me.
I gasped violently as his tongue traced a line down my throat: "You said that—" "Derrick—you said that you found a solution to turn the feral wolves back to normal; if you could use that and get to the wolves first before they cause any more damage, it would fix all of this."
His body tensed, and mine filled with fear as he froze.
He moved his body away from mine, releasing his grip on my neck, and then he spun me around so I was facing him. His deep, deadly, and dark look betrayed an emptiness of emotions that he had long suppressed.
"Did I say something wrong?" He gave a headshake.
"I want to taste you from the source this time." Ignoring everything I'd previously said to him, he said the words without hesitation. He dropped to his knees in front of me, his hands tracing down my hips, and I scowled at him.
While sliding my underwear down my thighs and tugging at them, he concealed his hands beneath my dress in the hope that I would forget about it.
I paused his hand with mine, waiting for him to look up into my eyes.
"Derrick." I spoke his name in a way that was both irritated and incredulous, and he sighed as we locked eyes.
His eyes were dark with the presence of his wolf, and his jaw was clenched.
"Gabriel says we need a witch blood wolf to tame the feral wolves." My hands moved from his desk to grip onto his shoulders as my heart fell from my neck into my stomach.
My heart was pounding in my chest as I processed his disclosure.
He had been in need of a witch blood wolf for a long time, and now he had one in front of him that would stop at nothing to help him.
"You don't sound pleased with that information?" My remarks came out as a confused mixture of hope and despair.
"They murdered my parents in cold blood; I'd sooner kill them all before I ever took their help."
After saying those turbulent words, he shoved my hands away from his and pulled my pants down to my ankles. As I struggled to make sense of the jumble of words he was saying, he pulled my legs apart. Perhaps he might reconsider if I told him right away, or perhaps he would demonstrate to me the true nature of an alpha monarch.
