Resisting Xavier Chapter 92

Maya smiled at Xavier as he opened the door for her to enter the car. It was her first day at work and she would be a big liar if she said she wasn't excited about finally going back to the workforce and real life. Xavier had insisted on dropping her at work before heading to his, something she regarded as him trying to assure her he fully consented to her working with Tyler. The morning was off to a beautiful start and though they had started off a routine like they were a couple which bothered her, she couldn't say she didn't enjoy him waking her up because she had overslept a bit. Then they had both been in their respective rooms showering and following through with their morning routine. She had made breakfast without thought, falling back into the pattern of cooking since she was the one who did all the cooking for the girls. They had eaten in companionable silence, making small talks occasionally and now as he drove her to work, she couldn't help but admit she liked it. He had dismissed the driver when he had stood up and Maya couldn't even complain because she did like the way his arms flexed when he was behind the wheels. "Feeling nervous?" He asked softly. "I don't know," she paused, giving him a worried glance, "I should right?" He gave her a little smile, "It is normal to feel nervous on your first day at work but if you don't, you are welcome." She looked at him confused even as he smirked smugly, "I think my self-confidence has started reflecting on you or you finally see how efficient you are and how they should be damn lucky you considered their asses." She shook her head, "I should just strut into the building and expect them to fall and worship me, what do you think huh?" She mumbled with a smile as she sat up. "You should absolutely do that," Xavier replied with a straight face. She nodded thoughtfully then their gaze met, they both looked away but Maya already saw the little smile lingering on his face. "I just want you to know that I'll always be by your side and be there for you regardless of where you choose to work. Trust me." She glanced at him. His eyes were fixated on the road. And at that moment she realized that she did trust him, have always trusted him even when she had met him for the first time. Because ordinarily, she'll never follow a mere stranger in his car to a strange location. She had tried to place that unruly character of hers on the alcohol but now she knew better than believing that lie. His expressionless eyes, his intimidating gait, the mysterious air he possessed yet she had not hesitated to throw herself into his arm and let him take her wherever he pleased. For crying out loud, she had even suggested he took her to his house! He could have been a serial killer, a delusional person. So she did trust him... A lot, so much that it frightened her too. Inhaling, she leaned on her seat, closing her eyes, a smile on her face as she wished she would continue feeling the way she did at the moment for as long as long was possible. *** "This is your office, you could do a bit of personal designing," Tyler shrugged even as Maya walked slowly into the room, not believing that this was happening. Grey walls, a palette with her name engraved on it. A laptop, bookcases, and an empty picture frame attached to the table which suggested she could put a picture there, laid on her table. She smiled, noting that the ceiling to floor window also granted her the opportunity to gawk at the cityscape. Tyler smiled as she met his glance, a big grin on her face. "This is.." she swallowed hard, "Massive." He nodded, "For someone that came highly recommended by my brother who is a pain literally of course you only deserve the best." Her eyes widened, "Recommended how?" "Of course, the douchebag won't tell you," he had an amused smile on his face, "He did call me to tell me that he was sending me the best gift ever and I better treat you right but if I don't, it is my loss anyway because he'll have you back," Maya couldn't help the bust of delight that swelled as she heard Tyler. She should be upset right? But for what? The thought that Xavier had bothered to even call Tyler, a man he didn't seem to like much just because of her made her feel so big, so important, so essential. She couldn't breathe. "When is the wedding?" He was peering at the big rock on her finger she had gotten comfortable wearing. "What wedding?" she blurted now twiddling the ring idly, a mannerism she adopted of recent involuntarily. "You and Xavier's?" He eyed her, "I think that's the real essence of getting engaged right?" She gave him a huge smile, "Right. Of course." She chuckled a bit, rubbing her forehead, "I'm just out of sorts, you know the excitement and all." He nodded in understanding and she resisted the urge to fist bump herself for that nice save. He did believe her. "With everything that happened, me trying to get on my two feet and try to get some sort of stability. I and Xavier are just taking it slow you know getting used to the results, the incidents of the past had incurred." She whispered, partly borrowing the lie Xavier had fed her friends. He nodded, "Of course." "So I'll give you time to get used to your space and get yourself settled. Jessica your assistant will get you anything you need, and if you need clarification don't hesitate to call me or Jared" He added. Jared Gregor was a co-owner of Playit company and his best friend since their high school days. She had read a lot about the company a week after meeting him. They had both built their first game in high school just for fun and they had only kept it within themselves. Jared's sister used his laptop and being intrigued with the game she normally sees her brother playing, she gave it a try and coaxed him later to share it with friends stating that it was amazing. Tyler had bought the idea casually, and that's how Playit was borne and now they both were worth billions of dollars. As a result of more successful apps that followed and the empire, they'd managed to build. "Welcome to Playit," he whispered even as he gave her a little smile, and then taking a step back, he left.
