Half an hour later, Wayne put down his fountain pen and looked up toward the office door.
Someone was opening the door.
But it wasn’t a thief; by the scent of it, it was the Magician Girl who seemed to be drawn to the stench of the Tentacle Monster.
Veronica put away her keys, double-locked the entrance to the Detective Agency, pushed open the door to the office, and leaned on the door frame with her arms crossed: “I knew it was you, I knew you had come back.”
“How did you know, did the Butler tell you?”
Wayne inwardly admitted his mistake; he had promised his teacher not to reveal his whereabouts, yet he had still been exposed.
However, he couldn’t blame Philark.
Veronica was the Lando Family’s young lady; it made no sense for a servant to lie to his master for an outsider.
Wayne was slightly disappointed; after all, he wasn’t Philark’s master, and his status in Philark’s heart was not as high as Veronica’s.
He stood up and walked towards Veronica, arms outstretched to give her a hug for the long-awaited reunion, which was, quite expectedly, rejected by Veronica.
Veronica quickly walked over to the desk and sat down, flipping through Wayne’s diary with interest.
As someone keen on following up on updates, she was very intrigued by Wayne’s endless stream of lies and was curious about how many more fabrications he could come up with.
“A righteous and benevolent young man of society…”
Veronica was amused by the joke in the diary.
As a female university student, she was glad that she had encountered social trash and had been taken advantage of; these experiences helped her deeply understand the double nature of humans.
Those lessons had been taught by the teachers at school as well, who often reiterated them, but the knowledge gained from personal experience was much clearer and more vivid than the abstract teachings of the classroom.
“What about the rest?

Wayne closed the diary.
A diary is sacred personal privacy; enough was enough, and there was no sense in subjecting it to public execution time and again.
Veronica looked disappointed; she wanted to see more of society’s dark side.
Wayne changed the subject: “You still haven’t said, how did you know I had returned to Lundan, did the Butler tell you?”
“Philark didn’t say, I guessed it myself,” replied Veronica.
Veronica called the villa’s main house to reassure Wayne to wait a bit longer, and incidentally mentioned Chris’s 7th birthday, for which she had prepared a gift on behalf of Wayne.
The Butler, Philark, answered the call, indicating that Wayne was currently unavailable and would call back when he had the chance.
Veronica didn’t think much of it at the time, but when she called the next day and Wayne was still busy, she immediately realized that Philark was hiding something.
She went to the Detective Agency to confirm Wayne’s whereabouts and found out Philark really was lying.
Veronica looked at Wayne suspiciously, curious about what kind of skills this guy had to have managed to turn the Lando Family’s Butler into lying to his mistress.
Could it be that Philark had also read the diary?
Impossible, Philark was no fool.
On Wayne’s side, hearing Veronica’s response, he was greatly relieved.
The Butler was truly loyal; if only Veronica weren’t so clever, this ruse would have passed unnoticed.
