Married by Mistake Chapter 37

Brody's POV I climbed down the stairs looking for Karen, it was totally right for me to tell her how I really felt about her. Helen came towards me as I scanned through the guests for her. "Hey, you look worried." She noticed. I faked a smile trying to ease my tired face. "I'm absolutely okay." I replied, still scanning through the guests for Karen. Where was she? "Looking for someone?" Helen asked with a smirk. Scratching my cheeks, I replied. "Yeah, where's huh... Karen?" She chucked. "I knew you wanted to see her, I saw her with Sarah a few minutes ago. Where were you?" She asked. "I was with Jake." I answered and noticed Sarah walking towards me. "I'll leave you guys to talk." My sister murmured and went to meet my mom. Sarah looked at me with a grin on her face as she stood in front of me, folding her arms. "Are you happy that I'm getting married to your brother?" She asked. That was definitely a stupid question but I was really excited, I didn't want her to make Karen's life miserable. "Yes, I'm really happy that you're getting married to my brother." "Well, I'm leaving for California tomorrow and I've told your mother that I can't marry Jake, I don't feel any connection." I raised an eyebrow in surprise. "A whore is not supposed to feel connections." I told her. She chucked. "I'm not a whore, I'm just a lady who wants love." I nodded. A nice definition of herself that was totally wrong. "That's absolutely great!" "Yeah, I guess so." She replied. I looked around the parlor for Karen but she was not there. "Where's Karen?" She chucked. "Do I look like her maid or nanny? I won't tolerate you asking me questions about your wife." What was she saying? "Helen saw the both of you together a few minutes ago." I said. Her eyes widened. "Alright, Karen's left you." The words came as a shock to me, I felt my legs wobbly with fear. "I don't understand you." I murmured, loud enough for her to hear me. "Karen couldn't cope, she told me about the contract and I told her to leave the country and go to any country that she loves." "You asshole! Where's she going?" I asked, angrily. Surprised by her behavior, I realized that it was wrong to have brought Karen back to the house. "If you truly love her, you'll find it out yourself." She replied and walked out of the door. Outside, the wind howled around the edges of the building, making the leaves on the trees rustle and flex as they sensed the oncoming storm. The house felt much smaller than usual. Like there was something outside pressing against the windows, aching to come in. Maybe it was the noise. It was probably the noise. Tap. Tap. Tap. A thousand, million taps at once. The language of water. I quickly rushed to close the windows as everyone scurried towards a corner. "Rain? Didn't y'all check the weather reports?' Mom asked with a loud voice annoyed. Lightning flashed across the sky. "But I checked the weather forecast and did not notice any warnings of a storm approaching." Helen answered. Suddenly I heard another deafening crack of thunder. This one was so powerful that the whole house trembled under the force of the storm. Like a child, I climbed the stairs and ran into Jake's room. Breathing heavily, I sank to the floor when I saw Jake wrapping himself with a blanket, scared. It suddenly felt like fun to me and I stood up quietly and tiptoed to the bed. I tickled him and he screamed, throwing the blanket to the floor. Laughing at him, he frowned in anger. "That was no joke!" I chuckled. "At least, I laughed so it was funny for me. I had fun." He shrugged and picked the blanket from the floor, neatly arranging it. He opened the window and smiled. The rain had stopped and everywhere was back to normal. "I'm scared of lightning and rain." He revealed. "Everyone is," I said and he looked at me with a smirk. "I didn't see Karen. It seems Sarah told her something and made her leave Texas. I don't know where to find her." He sat down on the bed and smiled at me. I was really confused. There was absolutely nobody except her parents in Los Angeles. "She might go to her parents but that's impossible because I don't think she could afford a plane ticket." I shook my head. He was definitely right but Sarah was not to be trusted. She could do anything to get back at me. "What if she helped her?" He looked at me, his eyes widened with surprise. "Didn't know my elder brother was brilliant." He joked and I slanted him a worried look. "The contract is supposed to end today." I told him. He smiled at me. "I don't know what to think. This is your fault, you should have told her the truth. You should have told her that you loved her." I frowned. "It's not that easy, I didn't know what to do. It was just a contract and not even supposed to be a marriage contract." "She's your wife and the only thing to do is to find her." He advised. I scoffed. "Are you kidding? Find her in which country? India? Canada? Britain?" He chuckled and winked at me. "Where does her parents live?" He asked. "Huh, New York, probably Los Angeles." I answered. "Bingo, Karen's in Los Angeles." I chuckled. Did he really think I was joking? Was it that easy to guess? "Are you normal? This is not a joke! I'm totally in love with my wife and I can't do without her." "Find her!" "Alright, Los Angeles! I'll leave for Los Angeles early tomorrow morning," I replied and walked downstairs. Mom walked towards me with a smile. "I haven't seen Karen, where's she?" I shrugged. I couldn't tell her the truth, she would be angry. "Huh, Karen's gone back home, she had a headache." I answered. Was that a perfect lie? Did she believe? She stared at me in a confused state. "Is she pregnant?" Mom asked and my eyes widened.
