RUBY.
Yasmin's loud moans could be heard throughout the house, I was almost sure she was screaming this loudly for my benefit. I barely slept through the night because of them and now I was having a rotten morning. I burnt my finger, spilt milk on the kitchen floor and broke an egg while making myself breakfast this morning. I was running late but I was determined not to go to work without eating the breakfast I had painstakingly made this morning. So I sat on the kitchen island eating my breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausage and pancakes with a large cup of herbal tea, which I've been craving.
I had just cut up a large piece of pancake and stuck it into my mouth when Yasmin walked into the room with a large smile on her face. She was wearing a short transparent night dress, her nipples and the g-string panties underneath clearly visible and the sight of Toby behind her clogged my throat in disappointment. I swallowed past the lump in my throat and took a large gulp of tea to wash it down.
"Any breakfast for us, fattie? All that sex works up quite an appetite right babe?." She said.
The sight of them and the thought of them having sex makes me nauseous so I pushed my plate in front of me, picked up my bag and head for work without a single glance behind me.
At work, I went to report to my supervisor first because he asked to see me first.
"I can see your ankle is all healed up." He said after we exchanged pleasantries.
"Yea, thanks."
"I'd like a detailed report of the time you spent with HR on my desk before lunchtime because you have a new assignment. You will be working as an assistant to Mrs Daniels starting today at a photo shoot this afternoon." He said, just my luck I thought, a bad day was about to become horrible.
"You don't look too happy."
"I'm okay, it's just one of those days."
"You can talk to me. I would love to be a shoulder you can cry on."
"Thank you," I said, thinking no thank you. "I'll keep that in mind, let me go work on those reports," I said, rushing away. He was staring at me expectantly like I was supposed to spill out my guts to him.
"Okay, here are the details of the shoot." He said handing me a file.
I typed the morning away in my little corner of the HR office and by lunchtime it was ready. I dropped it off at my supervisor's desk feeling grateful that he was absent. The man's stares at me gave me the creeps. A car is waiting for me in front of the building when I step out. The drive there was short and scenic, I spent most of it looking out the window and it put me in a far better mood than I had been in all day.
The location for the shoot was an exquisite park that looked like something out of a Jane Austen novel. Antique benches, fountains and ponds. My driver said the park only catered to a few select members when I asked why I did not know such a gorgeous place existed. I was dropped at the entrance and then followed the directions that were given to me by my supervisor that morning I went in search of the crew for the shoot. It seemed like the park was closed for the shoot because the only people I saw were the crew for the shoot. It seemed like the shoot was in full swing as I approached them, Yasmin was in a long layered white shirt dress that had puffy sleeves posing dramatically with a horse beside her.
"What are you doing here?" Clara Daniels asked loudly, drawing all the attention from Yasmin and to me.
"I'm an intern, I was sent as an assistant," I answered timidly.
"You are late! I like my assistant to at least be fashionable, to contribute to the work we are doing." She said, eyeing me from head to toe.
"I'm sorry," I mumbled. Whether I was apologising for being late or unfashionable, I didn't know. I gauged my appearance again, the corporate pants I paired with a basic white shirt and some sensible flat shoes seemed fashionable enough for work.
"You'll work with Yasmin, get her anything she needs between shoots." She said after she seemed to have contemplated for a moment. Just my luck every time things seem to be looking up they come spiralling down. At this point, I should be expecting the worst.
"What is everyone staring at? Back to work!" She yelled, startling everyone and the whole place came to life again, photographers giving instructions and people moving around with food, clothes, makeup boxes and accessories.
"I said low-fat Greek yoghurt, what is this rubbish?" Yasmin cried out spitting out the carrot sticks dipped in the offending cup of greek yoghurt, "unlike you, some of us take great pride in our appearance and put in a lot of work to maintain it." She said, pieces of chewed-up carrots flying out her mouth at every word. I take a few steps back to avoid being hit.
"It was an honest mistake, I'll get another one."
"After I've consumed half the cup." She said in outrage and I shrugged. I just couldn't see the big deal. She asked me to get her a cup of greek yoghurt and carrot stick as a snack, I did as she asked end halfway through she asked me if it was low fat. I said I didn't know so she checked and it caused so much outrage.
"Just get me a bottle of sparkling lemon water. No mistakes this time, understood." She said and I groaned. I had barely gotten a chance to eat my lunch because I have been too busy catering to her needs since I arrived. It's been, "Ruby, get a hankie and dab my brows and then hold a fan up to my face." Or "Ruby get me a bottle of raspberry water." I was exhausted from all her errands but I swallowed it up and left her makeshift dressing room in search of her sparkling lemon water.
They didn't have any sparkling lemon water at the refreshment table so I had to walk to the clubhouse to buy her fancy water and walk back to where the shoot was set up.
"Took you long enough." She said as I handed her the bottle. She took a sip and then sprayed it back out, " it's warm." She exclaimed.
"What the hell?" I said as she dumped the entire bottle on my head.
"Shoot be damned, damn the internship and damn it all." I stormed out.
