RUBY.
The first thought that crossed my mind when I woke up was that this was not my room. Who's room could I possibly be in then it hit me. I was in Toby's room and last night, "no, no, no," I muttered, shaking my head as I tried to hide the reality of what happened last night. I lifted the sheets and my naked body confirmed what must have happened last night, I shut my eyes and my body heated up from the memories of last night. Shame washed over me as I thought of how wanton I was, I couldn't even use drunkenness as an excuse because the truth is by the time we reached home I wasn't that drunk. Yasmin's call did me in, I wanted to rub it in her face so that I could get Toby but then what cost? At the cost of my dignity, look at me waking up in bed alone after my first time. It's a good thing Toby left the room before, at least I can escape the scene undetected. I wrapped the sheets around my naked body and hopped down from the bed and pain shot up my leg instantly, more evidence of last night's activities. I hobbled about the room gathering my discarded underwear, and clothes and last minute I grabbed the bloodied sheets and escaped to my room.
Only in the safety of my shower did I burst into tears. My emotions were just all over the place, I Was feeling disappointed in myself, ashamed and lonely. Toby does not care about me. I had just allowed myself to be another notch on his bedpost, this changed nothing about our marriage. What was I going to do? All I could come up with was to avoid Toby at all costs, no matter how sexy or good in bed he was. I always thought he would be a selfish lover but he was the opposite, he made sure I was enjoying myself as much as he was every step of the way, no I was not supposed to be thinking about how attentive he was in bed.
After my crying session, I showered, scrubbing my body thoroughly in a futile effort to scrub away the feel of his hands from my body. After towelling my body, rubbing my favourite lotion and dressing in comfortable clothes my stomach rumbled alerting me about how hungry I was so I ordered pizza and a large coke, I ignored the voice in my head that was judging me. When my food arrived I made a mad dash for the front door so I could be back to the confines of my room as fast as possible and continue avoiding Toby but it was futile because no one was home. The realization made me a little bit sad, maybe I was hoping he would be around.
I spent the entire weekend moping around, Toby was off to who knows where and I was in no mood to go out, leaving me to my thoughts but thankfully the weekend from hell is over and today I would be resuming my internship at Daniels Inc.
I was dressed in a grey skirt and a blue peplum wrap top paired with my black pumps and a sturdy black handbag. Hopefully, looking as professional as possible with my hair in a sensible bun and the simple jewellery set I selected.
"Hi, I'm the new intern and I'm here to see my supervisor," I said to the receptionist trying to sound as confident as possible.
"You're late." She said not looking up from her computer screen.
"No, I'm not. This was the time given to me."
"What's your supervisor's name?"
"Mr James."
"And your name."
"Ruby Daniels."
"Oh, it's you. Take the elevator to the top floor, the first office you see to your right would be Mr James' office." She said as she eyed me from head to toe.
"What the hell, how rude can a person get? And she's at the front desk." I muttered on the way to the elevator.
"Ruby Daniels, it's so nice to meet you, I'm Curt James your supervisor." I was greeted by a middle-aged balding man after I stepped out of the elevator and into the top floor to a reception area.
"Nice to meet you, Mr James," I said.
"Nonsense, please call me curt. Mr James sounds like my father and we would be walking quite closely." He said, smiling sheepishly at me.
I hummed in response, not feeling too comfortable with his familiarity. "This way Ruby." He said ushering me into his office.
"We want you to get a general feel of how the company is run so you would be rotating between different departments within the company and report back to me," I nod in understanding, "This week you'll start with the Human Resource Department, nothing big would be expected of you, all you have to do is carry out some basic administrative tasks and understudy how they work is He continued.
"Okay sir," I said.
"Curt!" He insisted.
"Curt," I repeated after him.
"Let me show you around, give you a little tour and then introduce you to the Head of HR he said," and he did just that, I was tired of walking by the time we were true, but he made sure we walked the entire building and talked my ear off the entire time."This is the break room, that coffee maker works best. This printer is more efficient," and on and on he went till we reached my new boss's office.
"This is Miss Roselyn, Head of HR, Miss Roselyn Ruby Daniels," he said introducing me to a stern-looking woman.
"Nice to meet you, Miss Roselyn," I said with a smile.
All I got was a nod in return, "Our new CEO's wife." She said to Mr James.
He nodded and she continued, "Hope she's a hard worker because I know her type. A hundred people are standing in line for this internship but she is standing here not for her hard work but because of the family she is from and who she is married to and most often these types are lazy and dumb. I can't stand lazy and dumb women." She ranted, it seemed like she had made her assessment of me and it would be hard to prove myself any different but I made up my mind to try.
Avoiding Toby proved to be an easy task because I was barely at home. Miss Roselyn had me running around from department to department from sunup till sundown. I didn't have any time to breathe or think of anything besides work until the end of the week. I had twisted my ankle while I was rushing to retrieve a file for Miss Roselyn so I had to go to the clinic.
I was seating in a chair waiting for the nurse to gather her supplies and come attend to me and right in front of me was a free condom dispenser and a poster advertising safe sex. Why would a clinic in a company be giving out free condoms? I thought.
"Oh oh we didn't use any condoms," I said as the realization hit me like a ton of bricks.
