Sabrina couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction in her role as Kenneth's assistant. The job allowed her to get close to her crush. Actually, it was her main purpose in applying for the job but as the days went by, she developed a genuine enthusiasm for her work.
However, there was one aspect of her job that brought an even greater sense of joy—Kenneth's mother, Lorraine, seemed to genuinely like her. Lorraine's approval meant a lot to Sabrina because it would be advantageous to her in the future once Kenneth would marry her. Yes, that was her plan; to marry Kenneth and make him her husband. On how to do that, she still had to ask her friend for some ideas.
She took pride in the fact that earned Lorraine's respect. Not only did Lorraine's approval boost Sabrina's confidence, but it also created a pleasant and welcoming work environment. Sabrina felt comfortable approaching Lorraine with any questions or concerns, knowing that her opinion would be valued. Lorraine's warm demeanor and genuine interest in Sabrina's well-being made her feel like more than just an employee—she felt like a trusted member of the team. Sabrina knew that having a positive relationship with her boss's mother was a valuable asset in her journey. In summary, she found great fulfillment in her role as Kennneth's assistant. Although it was Kenneth McBride who hired her, she learned that when it came to hiring personnel, Lorraine McBride was known for being exceptionally meticulous.
Lorraine was a doting mother to Kenneth McBride. Well, every mother would dote on a son. After she was hired, Lorraine summoned her for a meeting. Then, a few minutes later, Kenneth came. It turned out that Lorraine wanted to discuss something with them outside the University.
"Mom, why did you ask my assistant to come here?" Kenneth asked and then Lorraine arched her perfectly shaded brows.
"Why not? She works for you so I don't see a reason why I shouldn't invite her," she reasoned.
When Sabrina heard their conversation, she was confused why there was a sudden tension in the air. She glanced at Kenneth to check but she couldn't read his expression. Then, she shifted her gaze toward Lorraine and the woman continuously wore a smile on her lips. Inwardly, she was bewildered.
"Can I call you by your first name, Sabrina? It would be less formal," Lorraine suggested.
Sabrina was taken aback by the informal tone Lorraine used with her. "Yes, Ma'am," she replied.
"Good. Mmmm... don't you find him attractive?" Lorraine asked.
Sabrina assumed that this was part of an ongoing evaluation. Nevertheless, she hoped she wouldn't make any mistakes in front of Kenneth's mom. "He is attractive to every girl in the University, Ma'am."
"Thank you for being honest with me, Sabrina. Actually, he is already engaged to my friend's daughter and I am worried that some girl would try to seduce him at the University. Can you help me watch over him?" Lorraine asked.
"Mom, you don't have to tell her matters that should be kept private to the family," Kenneth said but Lorraine seemed to ignore him.
"Sabrina?"
"You can count on me, Mrs. McBride," she lied.
"Thank you, Sabrina. The secretary before you was also trustworthy, but she had to stop working for my son, Daniel."
Daniel McBride was the first son of Lorraine McBride but before Kenneth took over, Daniel became occupied with his love life. He was busy with the preparations of his wedding with socialite, Isabelle Ortega.
"Don't worry, Mrs. McBride. I will do my best to assist your son," Sabrina declared, but deep down, she couldn't help but wonder how long she could keep her act.
"Good," Lorraine smiled at the young woman. "By the way, I like your guts to get a job in order to support your needs. Your actions are commendable, Sabrina."
"I should be the one to commend Skyline for offering this kind of opportunity for the students, Ma'am," Sabrina responded.
Sabrina sensed that Lorraine had a lot in her head that she wished to talk with, but the waiter already arrived with their order. For a brief moment, Sabrina's attention was consumed by the breakfast spread before her, but it didn't take long for Kenneth to divert her focus once again.
She sensed his piercing gaze, scrutinizing her with a mix of skepticism and doubt. Clearly, he was questioning his mother's judgment in choosing her as his secretary. Sabrina felt a twinge of uncertainty, unsure of how to win over this seemingly difficult boss.
"So, how old are you again, Ms. Hart?" Kenneth's question pierced the air. He hadn't had the opportunity to review her resume himself, as it was his mother who made the final decision. Doubts began to creep into Kenneth's mind, casting a shadow of uncertainty on his mother's ability to accurately assess character.
Sabrina maintained her composure, meeting Kenneth's gaze directly. "I just turned eighteen this year, Mr. McBride," she responded with confidence, revealing her youthful yet determined spirit.
“You must have big dreams, Ms. Heart,” he said.
Sabrina, however, remained steadfast and sincere in her reply. "Big dreams? Of course, sir, that’s why I am doing my best to finish my schooling,” she revealed, her voice tinged with a touch of vulnerability.
After breakfast, Lorraine entrusted Sabrina to Kenneth's care and departed for another engagement, leaving Sabrina feeling slightly apprehensive as she walked alongside him back to the office.

"Do you have something to tell me?" Kenneth's voice cut through the silence as Sabrina entered his office, seeking clarity from his newly appointed secretary.
Sabrina mustered her courage, returning his gaze. "I believe it's vice versa, Mr. McBride. Do you dislike me?" she inquired, hoping to understand the source of his apparent discontent. The last thing she wanted was for him to get mad at her.
