Alpha's Regret Chapter 39

"It's looking in your favor?" Liam asked, his phone closely placed to his ear as he listened to Cole talk about the court case. "What do you think? Of course, it is. I'm going to get my son at all costs, whether she likes it or not. I could see the fear in her eyes yesterday, when the case was adjourned. She doesn't have the slightest idea who she's facing," Cole boasted. "Oh, wow. That's... That's nice to hear," Liam replied. For about ten seconds, there was an awkward silence over the phone. Liam thought Cole still had something to say, and Cole thought the same thing. "Anyways, I'll keep you updated. Later," Cole said. Liam was just about to end the call when he heard Cole call him. "Oh, and one more thing, Liam?" Liam brought the phone back to his ear. "Yeah?" "I just wanted to say thank you," "For what?" Liam was taken aback. "For being a friend. For supporting me through all this. Not too many people would stand by their friends in times like this. You encouraged me to go get my son. You even contacted a doctor that helped us check the DNA of my son. You've been there for me, Tris. What is there not to say thank you for?" "Uhmm... Nothing, I guess," Liam coughed out a nervous laugh. "You've been a good friend, Liam. Thank you so much. I know you said you'd be very swamped this period, but you have to show your support for me in court at the next sitting. I'll see you later," Cole said and Liam quickly ended the call before Cole could say anymore. As silence engulfed his office, the only thing his wolf could feel was guilt. Why didn't he feel like a good friend? Why did he not feel excited for his best friend, now that he was finally getting what he wanted? He hated the fact that he was torn between two sides. Of course, it was a lie that he told to Cole about being swamped with work. He wasn't doing anything his staff couldn't handle, but he couldn't bear to follow Cole to the court and seat at his corner, while Amy would be at the other side, staring at him with dark eyes. He was this close to asking Amy out before all this happened. Why did this drama have to unfold now, of all times? What made things even worse was that, the person he was feelings for, was the mother of his best friend's child... "Oh, my head," Liam groaned. A light knock on the door jolted him out of his thoughts. "Come in," His door opened, and he saw Amy and Kayla walk into his office. "Good morning, sir," they greeted once they reached his desk. As they stood before him, mixed feelings if surprise and awkwardness. He was happy and relieved to see them - Amy, especially - but what was he going to say to them? How was he going to come off as neutral and unbiased - or at least, make it not look like he was on Cole's side? "Good day, Amy and Kayla. How have you been? I'm happy to see that you both are back to work. I know that you're going through a difficult time, so I wouldn't really mond if you needed so more day away from the company. Still, I'm happy to see you - you both, of course. What brings you to my office?" He managed to pin his professional jargons with a sensible question. They both took out white envelopes out of their bags and handed them to Liam. "What's this?" Liam muttered, and he opened one of the envelopes to see a letter. "It's our resignation letter, sir," Kayla replied. At the sound the the word "resignation letter," his body froze to a halt. He looked up at stared at them, hoping they would calm of it with a big laugh and say that it was a joke. But their faces could show any more seriousness than they did, right now. Or was it that he did not hear well? He managed to open the letter to read. They weren't joking. They were resigning for real. "Wh... Why? What went wrong?" He stammered, shock written all over his face. "Fir reasons best known to us, we shall not be able to work for you anymore. If you will, please sign on the line that says EMPLOYER, so we can officially be ex-staffs of this company-" "I'm not signing anything!! What is this?! Why are you both resigning all of a sudden?!" He sprang to his feet in anger. "Like we said before, for reasons best known to us-" "Cut that crap, Kayla. Spare me that bullsh...," He stopped himself from flaring up at her and using unethical words in his office space. "I know, you don't want to work here because of my affiliation with Cole. But that doesn't mean you should resign all of a sudden. I know you're mad, but you can't be mad at me. I didn't do anything. You know I gave you a job here because we're friends. We shouldn't end that friendship because of a complication you have with my friend," He turned to Amy, who had been silent since they both entered his office. "Talk to me, Amy. I understand if some of that aggression will be transferred on me because I'm friends with him, but you can't just quit. You can't do this to me. I... I need you, Amy," he reached for her hands, but she retreated and looked away from him. "Amy-" "That won't be necessary, Liam. All we ask is for you to sign the letter, so we can leave the company. We'll give you some days to think about it, but we trust you're going to sign it. Thank you so much for helping us this far. We really appreciate. We don't take your good deeds for granted, but this is where it ends for us. Thank you, sir," Kayla said and they walked out of the office. "Great. My chances of getting her to be my girlfriend or even seeing her face is blown away" he collapsed to his seat. *** "Kayla, are you sure about this?" Amy questioned in doubt once they left the building. Amy saw Kayla point, but she had Tris to feed. They had bills to pay. The salary they got from Liam Tech Ltd was very convenient for them. She was scared of losing on that and not getting anything good. "I'm sure about it, Amy. We can't be involved with the friend of our enemy. We'll get a better job somewhere else," she said and dragged Amy across the road to the other side, so they could get a bus.
