This Life, I Will Be the Protagonist Chapter 928

The black cat sitting reluctantly in Blood Elf’s lap—because someone had stolen its seat—also looked up in confusion. "Huh?" Blood Elf lowered his head and asked the cat, "Did you know about this?" The cat turned to glare at Lightchaser, who had taken its seat. "When did that happen?" Lightchaser’s expression froze, uncharacteristically blank. She murmured to herself, "Wait, what?!" In the VIP section, Wail pinned down GodDraw77. "Hmm?" GodDraw77 blinked. "Ah?" Maple Syrup’s words had initially sounded like a joke, the kind of ridiculous line a classmate might throw out for shock value. No one believed it, not really. After all, Maple Syrup’s divine gift was deception. How could anyone tell if she wasn’t using it right now? But the problem was, this lie was too absurd to even be useful as a bluff. Then, a sharp scream pierced the air from one corner of the library. "That statement... is actually true!?" The voice came from Lulumi of the Glacial Lake Abyss. If Maple Syrup was known for deceit, then Lulumi was her natural opposite—the one born to expose it. Her divine talent was truth-seeing. Every time she uncovered a lie, she gained attributes. And every student in Arisentna hated that squirrel. After years of Divine Games, everyone knew her ability well. She never stopped at the right time; she’d expose a lie in the middle of a boss raid, in class, or during a funeral. No sense of timing. From a nearby shadow, a crab poked out half its body. "What?!" From a collapsed shelf, NightFury popped her head out. "Huh?!" The plush shark, caught mid-spin after being stabbed by a tree shadow, yelled while twirling in the air, "Are you serious?!" Mistblade, who had been running in the opposite direction, slammed on the brakes and sprinted back with a sharp U-turn. Her stride was composed, her face dead serious—anyone watching would think, there must be a critical emergency, something worthy of a seventh-year class representative of Moonlight Marsh rushing to the teacher’s office. Fat Goose, Pine Bloom, Pomango, Quex, Motor—all of them were converging toward the battlefield. The entire floor of the library froze mid-motion. Every student still alive in the storm of tree shadows, every one capable of surviving the chaos, began to move quietly toward the place where Rita and Maple Syrup were fighting. Even the Librarians crept closer. On the circular balconies of the upper and lower floors, players began appearing one after another, peering down. At the center of the storm, Rita had no time to acknowledge her long-lost classmates. She was too stunned to think. What did she just say? We were classmates in high school! Wait—no, this had to be something her older self had done. But why would her older self do that?! Could it be... that’s how she got her wings? Maple Syrup’s gaze followed Rita’s, landing on the glowing wings hovering between them. Her tone was calm but certain. "Of course. How else did you think you got the owl’s feathers? The form’s a little unusual, sure—mixed blood. That’s rare in the Forest Sea." Mixed blood?! What kind of ancient clan system did Forest Sea even run on? She switched into Hunting Mode, vanishing into the tree shadows and letting Maple Syrup’s oncoming strike smash into her own summoned forest instead. Their battle reignited instantly. But Maple Syrup wasn’t done. Opportunities were rare—young BS-Rita was far less annoying to talk to than the adult one. Her strikes grew sharper, her words darker. "You killed your sister. She had the same Orange-Red Light Wings as you." "...What?" Rita blinked. "I have a sister?" Maple Syrup continued mercilessly. "You also impersonated your aunt once—tried to deceive me." "...I have an aunt? And I impersonated her?!" A fierce strike sent Rita crashing to the ground, sliding across the floor until she stopped right next to Pine Bloom. Lying flat, she looked up and asked, dead serious, "Auntie... is that you?" Pine Bloom froze, eyes as confused and innocent as Rita’s. "I haven’t gotten the memo yet—uh, I mean, she hasn’t told me about that." Confirmed. Pine Bloom had no future memories. She and Maple Syrup were only working together temporarily. Rita rolled to her feet and sprang aside just in time to dodge a shadow strike and Maple Syrup’s plunging spear. Then came Lulumi’s inevitable narration from the corner. "The ’aunt’ part is false. But the part about you trying to deceive her... that’s true." "...Thanks?" Rita muttered between breaths. "You’re welcome," said Lulumi proudly. Rita could already see it in the crowd—the dumb ones were just here for the drama, but the clever ones were starting to piece things together. And in a world like Arisentna, clever people were never in short supply. Even Pine Bloom’s expression had changed—less confusion now, more suspicion. At first everyone thought they were just watching a fight. Now it felt like every sentence was a revelation, each word connecting the dots of some long-forgotten story. If Maple Syrup was telling the truth... then what had been the lie? Maple Syrup clearly didn’t care whether anyone believed her or not. Even if they did suspect something, what could they do? Her regained memory came from a Divine Game reward. And a memory lock given by the Divine Game itself wasn’t something that reason or emotion could break. As the last Riot Time ended, another began seamlessly. Maple Syrup didn’t even need to act anymore. She simply pressured the players until someone broke and destroyed a book, triggering the next wave. Rita scanned the area, searching for Mojie. "Looking for Mojie?" Maple Syrup’s voice came from above. "He’s already out. You really think I’d let him live to the end with that kind of ability?" She opened her cart and activated a skill: [Lucky Number]. Flipping her dagger into a reverse grip, she tapped the blade’s tip. A tiny pumpkin-carved die popped from its hilt, glowing faintly orange. Her boots—stitched with the Moonlight Marsh emblem—hit the ground hard as Maple Syrup dove at her from above. She swung her dagger upward, sending the pumpkin die spinning into the air. The two students, the only ones with flame-like wings, clashed once again midair. Maple Syrup asked, "Why not use that skill you used to send JE away?" Good question. Why not use [Dark Side of the Moon]? The rabbit that had been chasing Maple Syrup and even one of the Librarians both turned to look. Rita’s eyes burned brighter than the light of her wings. "Because sending you away would be the smart move. But facing you with everything I have—that’s the braver one." For the first time, Maple Syrup saw BS-Rita smile with no shadow behind it—brilliant, unburdened. "I’m Lightchaser’s apprentice. I’m GodDraw77’s student. I won’t let them think I’m a coward." The pumpkin die struck the floor and rolled. Her Lucky Number for today was six.
