On the way there is only a long silence, except for the occasional minor comment that Mía makes. He keeps his eyes fixed on the road, while mine does not leave his face. I don't know why I do it, but it's just unavoidable and that makes me even more uneasy. For that reason, I don't expect him to open the door for me when the silhouette of my house is drawn through the window glass. Once the car stops, I open the door myself and get out of it, walking toward the door at a brisk pace. Mia enters seconds later, alone.
Mine: What happened?
May: Nothing, I'm just a little dizzy. Are you staying to sleep today?
He nods, implying that he accepted my invitation.
It is almost eleven o'clock at night, when my father addresses me during dinner, from which this time I cannot escape.
Tomás: And how was your day? (Question, looking at both of us).
Mine: Great (says when noticing that I am not going to answer).
Tomás (sighs): And Samuel?
May (looking up): Who?
Tomás: Samuel, your new ...
May (interrupting): Good, good.
He looks at me strangely, while I am relieved that he did not mention the word "bodyguard". Mia seems not to have caught anything strange and I prefer not to mention my mother or my useless brother, who, as always, never have any idea of anything that happens in this family.
Suddenly I wake up and when I look at the time I find that it is not yet dawn. Mia sleeps as if she's not breathing, yet my eyes seem unable to close again. As much as I try several times, I can't get back to sleep. I get out of bed and go to the mirror that is hanging on one of the bathroom walls, frightening myself. I am disheveled and my face looks similar to that of a living dead. I am surprised by the fact that I woke up like that out of nowhere, since it does not usually happen to me.
I leave the room, trying to produce as little noise as possible and appear in the corridor, with little lighting, due to the small lamp that Luisa always leaves on to produce a minimum degree of illumination in case someone like me wakes up at night.
I hear my brother's intolerable snoring as I pass his door and down the stairs that lead to the lower level. I am convinced that there is no one when a creaking that comes from outside makes me jump with a fright. I approach the door and open it, turning the key discreetly. The first thing I can see are two of my father's cars, parked side by side at a notable distance from where I am standing. I frown, convinced that the noise I thought I heard was just part of my imagination, and I propose to go back inside. And there it sounds again, this time already really startling me. I look at the vehicles again and then I realize it: one of the cars is not there. None of the guards appear in my sight, not even the doorman, whose job it is precisely to guard the entrance.
I lock the door and start to walk around the house. With just a few steps, I see a white light a few meters away. I move closer, which is strange behavior for a girl as skittish as I am, and I recognize my father's third car: the Mercedes in which Samuel follows me everywhere I go. It's that same car and its lights are on. Anyway, I keep walking and I am very close when everything goes dark. I stop when I notice that that constant noise also disappeared. I hear footsteps, feeling someone approach. The idea of running crosses my mind, but I think that at this point in the situation it is useless.
From one second to the next, the sound of footsteps is replaced by heavy breathing that collides with my face. I don't know who he is, I just know that I have him close, very close. The lights reappear and I close my eyes, thinking that their intensity has blinded me. I reopen them. The breath is still there, this time accompanied by a face that is only millimeters from mine. When I finally see clearly and recognize Samuel, it is too late. His lips attack mine and move with unstoppable brutality.
