Zane's eyes fluttered open—not to the cold of stone or the warmth of a bed, but to the weightless stillness of that place again.
The skies above were endless and starless, the horizon nothing but a shifting canvas of black and violet mist. He stood in the middle of the familiar training grounds—though now, it felt... changed. The air thrummed with power. The shadows bowed to him.
A low hum echoed through the emptiness, like the distant roar of some ancient, slumbering beast.
She stood a few meters away, but not how she normally did. Not with her usual sly grin or confident stride. No. She was on one knee, head bowed low, one hand over her heart and the other pressed into the obsidian floor.
"Welcome, my king," she said, her voice reverent and trembling with something that sounded like pride—and fear.
Zane blinked. "What...?"
She raised her eyes to him. In them, galaxies swirled. "You awakened."
Zane looked down at himself. His body still bore faint cracks of violet light, his hands trembled with lingering heat, and faint embers of shadow coiled around him like silk threads. A faint, flickering crown of shadow hovered above his head—just as it had in the battle.
"That wasn't me," Zane muttered. "That thing back there... that wasn't me."
Nyx stood, slow and graceful, her expression unreadable. "It was. It is. The Void does not grant power. It reveals it. You reached deep—and your true self answered."
He took a step back, unease curling in his gut. "Why didn't you say anything? I called for you. You left me."
"I did not leave you," she said softly. "The moment you struck the earth with your blade, I could not reach you. You entered a place even I cannot follow. That darkness... it was yours alone."
Zane clenched his fists. "So what does this mean? Why now? Why me?"
Nyx tilted her head, then gestured. The ground behind her began to part, revealing a long, jagged pathway made of broken stars and fractured time. At its end, a shadowed throne stood—tall, ancient, and pulsing with the same energy that thrummed in his veins.
"Because the Void chose you, Zane. Because you are no longer a pawn of fate. You are the sovereign of entropy. The Monarch of the End."
Zane felt a weight settle on his shoulders—not a burden, but a mantle.
He looked at the throne. For a brief moment, he saw himself sitting on it—older, battle-scarred, crowned and cloaked in living shadow, eyes like dying suns. Around him knelt legions of wraithlike figures. Entire worlds crumbled at his will.
He blinked, and the vision vanished.
"No," he whispered. "That's not what I want."
Nyx stepped closer. "Then shape it. You are not bound to a path. You are the one who breaks them. You are the Void Incarnate."
A low chime rang across the empty sky. The system's voice echoed, distorted, slower than usual:

Then, like fog pulling away from a window, the vision began to fade.
Nyx gave one last bow, whispering as she dissolved into the wind:

Zane's eyes snapped open in the real world.
He was in the infirmary. Alone. Bandaged. Alive.
And yet, his hand instinctively reached toward his forehead—where for a moment, he swore he still felt the weight of a crown.
