The sun scorched the wasteland above, but below, the air was cold, stale, and heavy with silence. As Zane descended the narrow stairway into the catacombs, every sound he made was swallowed. Footsteps? Nothing. Breath? Nothing. His voice, when he tried to mutter, disappeared like smoke.

The masked version laughed — a soundless, chilling laugh — then vanished like smoke.
The mental prison shattered. Zane found himself back in the Hall of Echoes, standing before the Mask once more.
Carefully, he reached out and took it. The cold, weightless artifact settled in his hand as if it had always belonged there.
He slipped the Mask over his face.
