"Mm, I know. Be careful driving back."
Lu Jinghan only turned his steering wheel to drive away after watching Han Xi get into the elevator.
Han Xi entered the hospital and completed the handover with the doctor on duty, immediately changing clothes and heading straight to the operating room.
Despite being young, Han Xi was the best neurosurgeon in Ancheng Hospital, maintaining a record of zero failures in surgeries so far. The patient’s situation was very dangerous, and the doctor on duty was not confident in performing the surgery, which was why the dean called Han Xi.
By the time the surgery ended, it was already past two in the morning. The patient was wheeled into the intensive care unit by a nurse, and Han Xi, exhausted, removed her sterile gown, feeling entirely drained.
"Doctor Han, you should go rest for a bit. I’ll keep an eye on the patient, and if anything happens, I’ll notify you immediately," the young nurse said as she cleaned up the operating table.
Han Xi nodded: "If anything happens, call me immediately."
Back in the office, Han Xi rubbed her sore neck and lay on the sofa. Perhaps due to exhaustion, she fell asleep within a few minutes.
In a daze, she didn’t know how long she had slept, but Han Xi woke up drenched in cold sweat from a nightmare, the suffocating pain sending chills down her spine.
She had just dreamed again of her mother lying covered in blood on the lawn...
Han Xi had grown accustomed to waking up from nightmares daily. She rubbed her temples, glanced at her wristwatch, and got up to check on the patient in the intensive care unit. Once assured there were no issues, she returned to her office.
Her head felt heavy, and she lay back on the sofa, sleepiness overwhelming her, and fell asleep once again.
Chen Zheng had an early shift today, and upon entering the hospital, he heard that Han Xi had been called in for an emergency surgery last night. Knowing she likely hadn’t had breakfast yet, he headed directly to Han Xi’s office with breakfast in hand.
When he pushed the door open, Han Xi was still asleep. Chen Zheng walked over, placed the breakfast on the table, took off his coat, and covered Han Xi with it, his fingertips involuntarily brushing her serene brow, nose, and lips as she slept.
Just then, Lu Jinghan walked in and caught this scene, his deep eyes instantly radiating a piercing coldness. The sound of footsteps made Chen Zheng pull back his hand and turn around.
"Han Xi is my woman, not someone Doctor Chen can covet and touch."
Lu Jinghan’s deep voice carried an imposing threat.
Chen Zheng smirked mockingly: "Your woman? Isn’t Mr. Lu speaking a bit prematurely? You’re neither married nor have a certificate; what right do you have to call her your woman?"
Lu Jinghan set down the breakfast in his hand, suddenly feeling an urge to punch him.
Chen Zheng glanced at the still-sleeping Han Xi, his gaze tightening: "How long have you known Xiao Xi, Mr. Lu? You don’t really know her. There’s a man in her heart that must never be touched; that’s her reverse scale. What makes you think you can replace that man and make Xiao Xi fall in love with you?"
The rage within Lu Jinghan boiled like lava, truly provoked by Chen Zheng’s words, his dark and deep eyes bearing a murderous aura like a Rakshasa in hell.
"What happens between Xiao Xi and me is none of an outsider’s business. Take your coat and get the hell out." Lu Jinghan nearly gritted his teeth as he finished speaking.
Chen Zheng chuckled indifferently, picked up the coat covering Han Xi, and turned to leave.
Lu Jinghan watched the woman lying sideways on the sofa, leaned over to drape a blanket over her, then walked to the window, lit a cigarette from his pocket, and gazed into the distance with eyes as deep as a cold pool.
