“Did you think that Selena would stick with a lowlife like you?” Mr. Harry Delacrioux grinned, enjoying himself, happy that finally, his plans were beginning to work.
He was happy that Selena told him about Chris's mother’s health, it had just suited perfectly for his plans. Everything was falling into place and he would get rid of this boy and his spawn growing in his daughter's womb.
“Get straight to the point Harry, I haven't got all day.'' Chris was in no mood for formality or to massage the ego of this man standing before him. He used to have so much respect for him but so sad that he was an ogre in a suit.
“Why the rush Chris, do you have some plans with a new girl, have you forgotten my daughter so soon.” he watched as the muscles in Chris' neck tightened and his Adam's apples rose and fell. This is going to be interested he chuckled.
“Unlike you, I have self-respect and I respect Selena a lot.”
“Watch your tongue, young man”
“You claim you love your daughter but you are hell-bent on destroying her life.”
“One more word from you and I will gun you down. I have good lawyers that can change my statements to self-defense.”
Chris, unfortunately, believed him, he knew anything is possible in this country, the rich can get away with anything even murder. Putting his hands in his jackets, he remained silent, challenging this monster could be detrimental to him and his mother.
“Take this and look at it carefully.” he handed Chris an envelope
“WWhat'sthis?”
“Open it and see, it's for your viewing pleasure.”
Heart beating fast, afraid the contents would cost him his happiness, curious as to what was in the package, he tore off the seal and brought out the contents.
“Pictures.” he looked at Selena's father, he looked pleased with himself.
Shocked, he looked at the pictures, they were pictures of Selena with another man. Another picture of her rubbing her bump “was she pregnant for someone else, was that why he had not seen her for almost four months now” the last picture broke his heart, it was a wedding picture of Selena and a man, the man looked rich and affluent just what her father would want.
With a broken heart, Chris returned the package, “anything else you want to say” he wouldn't break down in front of this man, never.
“You can keep them.”
“They are not mine.’ rubbing his eyes to push back the tears that were threatening to fall. “you won Mr. Delacriox, congrats. Now may I take my leave.
Selena's father looked at Chris for a second. He felt pity, probably guilty, doubt crept in, was it worth it. Shaking off the feeling, he couldn't stop now, his pride was more important to him “I heard your mother has kidney failure.”
“Don't look shocked, I know everything.”
“None of your business.” he started walking away
“I can help you.”
Chris didn't stop, he was tired and wanted to get away from this man, as far away as possible.
“Your mum needs a transplant, and I know you don't have insurance, you need lots of money to keep her alive.”
Stopping he turned towards Selena's father “are you monitoring me.”
“Let us just say that I know the right people. Forget about my daughter, after all, she is happily married now and expecting a baby.”
He didn't need to be reminded of his loss.
“Take this, a cheque of five million dollars, treat your mum and start a new life. I still don't like you though and even if you reject it, it's your loss, how would you raise the money all by yourself.”
It hurt Chris a lot that what he said was the truth, he needed to keep his mother alive, Selena was obviously no longer his, taking the money is a spite on his ego, but his mother’s life meant more to him. Swallowing hard, damning his ego he spoke. “Thank you”
“Good boy.” he patted his cheeks with both hands and entered into his car “my work here is done, let’s go.”
Chris watched as they sped off. He felt empty and bereft. He lost in more ways than one
