The Nerd Can Fight(#1) Chapter 37

“Don’t shit with me, Adam.” I growled at him while marching past the counter, not even bothering to glance at him. Why was I being a bitch, you might ask? Guess. Yep, it was Monday. I might be known as a nerd but I was not necessarily a school lover. The people hated me and the feeling was mutual. I might hate them even more actually, considering the fact that I wouldn’t be able to punch the living shit out of them for every insult they threw my way. “Oh come on, babe, don’t be like that.” Adam mocked and I made a face at the nickname. I liked the guy — what? The dude’s hot, — but I was not one for couple pet names. Adam chuckled when he caught a glimpse on the ridiculous gagging face. I kept a straight face, scooping up some bacon, eggs and chocolate chip pancakes from the counter. “You do know I made those,” he pointed out and I huffed out an annoyed breath. You do not mess with a girl on a Monday morning. I turned to face him, ready to kick his ass when a loud thump and a pained grunt came from behind me, causing the sirens in my head to go off. I whirled around to face the intruder but relaxed and turned back into a moody bitch once I saw Preston leaning on the door, a hand bracing his body against the frame of the door and the other clutching his head. His eyes were squeezed shut in pain and I watched silently. I didn’t know he was going to be home tonight, he usually ended up staying in his friend’s house after some party, probably passed out from the amount of liquor he downed the night before. If I was notified of his presence, I would’ve stayed at home and didn’t bother staying over but a certain someone didn’t bother telling me. I turned to Adam with an accusing pointed stare but his hands were already raised in mock surrender. I scoffed before swiveling back to Preston who had finally stopped groaning but was still caressing his head like it might break any second. My eyes inspected him and I made a conclusion that for the first time since God knows how long, I wasn’t the only one who looked like a dying hippo. He might even look worse than I did. “Are you hungover?” Adam asked in a curious tone and I cast him an ‘are you blind?’ look over my shoulder. He shrugged and I decided that I was being a big enough bitch to him, deciding to take it out on his dick of a brother instead. A groan of confirmation came out of Preston and I smirked, a sick happy feeling resided in me as I watched him stagger into the kitchen. “Grab me some aspirin, would you?” He asked hoarsely. He reached out to touch me and my hand shot out before he could grab my shoulder. The urge to snap it from his offending comment the last time we were in this kitchen was unbelievably huge. “Don’t touch me,” I snapped at him and he reeled back from me, causing me to let go of his arm. He raised both hands in surrender and I glared at him. You can’t blame me for not liking the guy since he practically insinuated that I was a slut. I kept my hard stare on him and he mumbled to himself, nursing his head while he searched the cabinets for some aspirin. Adam sensed the tension between us and grabbed our plates, maneuvering me to the living room and I instantly felt guilty on the way I acted. I hate my conscience. Mumbling to myself, I ignored Adam’s questioning eyes and trudged back to the kitchen, dragging my legs along and when I was finally by the kitchen door, I stopped short and locked my eyes with Preston’s who was downing a cup of water. Preston slammed the cup back on the counter, never letting go of my gaze. He seemed like he was about to make a smart comment about my presence but I beat him to it, muttering the words that would probably cause me a life-time of teasing. “I’m sorry for being a bitch,” I forced out and turned around in a quick second but before I could go back to where Adam was sitting and eating contently on the couch, my next movements were brought to a halt by Preston. Although I couldn’t see his face, I could hear the evident smirk probably plastered on his face right then. His smugness seeped into his words. “I’m sorry, I didn’t quite get that. Can you repeat it, Cassandra?” I growled under my breath and I tried to ignore the way he mocked me. “Don’t get used to it, Jones.” I snapped. I continued to walk off towards Adam and plopped down onto the couch with a huff, still mumbling to myself and cursing Preston out under my breath. Why should he be such an ass? He’s grating my nerves. “That was something I didn’t expect to happen,” Adam commented in a humored tone and I groaned dreadfully. “Not you too,” I begged and he chuckled. “Don’t worry, I won’t start. Don’t want Ms. Pixie to go all ninja up my ass,” he teased and dropped his voice to a whisper at the last one. It managed to put a smile on my face; a teeny, tiny, brief smile. But Adam caught it and a smile was a smile. His grin literally radiated off light and I cringed slightly at the bright happiness radiating off him in contrast to my gloomy existence. I took my plate off the coffee table and started scarfing down its contents in 5 minutes flat, wiping my mouth with a napkin and racing to the kitchen for a cup of water to relieve the dry Sahara desert that is my throat. Damn, that was delicious. Adam definitely needs to cook more often. Luckily, I didn’t bump into Preston which would’ve been a pain in my ass. I don’t think he’ll ever let that one go. I raised my gaze from the floor to check the time and when I saw that we could actually be on time for once, I rushed back to where Adam was and dragged him all the way to his bike. We arrived with approximately 15 minutes to spare so I decided to take my sweet time to reach my locker, leaving Adam to join his friends. It was simple, really. Go to locker, get the books, head to class, stare out the window and daydream for the remaining minutes but of course fate just had to develop a burning hatred towards me and grace me with Sonia’s presence. There she was, leaning against the locker next to mine, a foot crossed in front of the other, the tip of her right pump touching the tiles, filing her fingernails and looking bored out of her mind. The fury that left me this morning came back with lashing force. Glaring at her being, I decided to remain silent and settle with trying to kill her in my head instead. Two feet away from the lockers, she finally acknowledged my existence and straightened up, eyeing me with a certain look that I couldn’t decipher. Well then... I kept my glare intact and focused on retrieving the thick books from the locker and shoving them in my backpack. It made me wonder how girls like Sonia carry their shits to class. They bring these small purses everywhere they go and sometimes I imagine her purse to be a magical pocket that can fit anything and still weighs like a feather. Man that would be awesome. My clouded thoughts of magic purses were cut off by Sonia’s manicured nails tapping my shoulder. I had to clench my jaw to keep from snapping her manicured fingers off. I hitched my backpack to my shoulder, purposely slinging it to the side, trying to hit her with it without looking like I did it intentionally. She yelped in surprise and I shut my locker shut, causing a few people that were still standing by the corridors to jump in surprise and glare at me. “What?” I failed in trying to sound less agitated and more fearful. It was a crappy morning. First, I had to see Preston’s hungover face and now I had to deal with school drama. Many would say that the three words that were able to make one’s heart race were when someone confessed their love to you but this? This was worst. The three words that spilled out of her mouth made my heart race faster than the times Adam would say sweet things or kiss my forehead during the most random times. “You can fight.”
