I lowered the letter.
It was so far.
"What's going on?" Tommy asked, yawning. Frido was snuggled up against him while he stared at me with his wide eyes. My heart clenched as I tucked him in.
"How about we go to the woods and play in the morning?" I asked to distract him. His eyes shone brighter than the candle on the bedside table.
"Yes!" he shouted and sat up. "I want to go to the rocks!"
"Shh," I replied, glancing at the closed door. His joy dampened and he yawned a second time. "Now we go to sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a long day for us."
There would be war.
"Will you tell me another story?" Tommy asked with tired eyes.
"Which ones would you like to hear?"
"The ones from the primeval wolf and the lycan," he said, staring at me expectantly.
My heart grew heavy. He grew up in this world. He knew nothing but the rule of the wolves. And he would probably never know anything else. A half-hearted smile crept onto my lips.
"But I've told you this hundreds of times," I replied.
"Never mind, again."
I sighed.
"Fine...
At the beginning of the world, before humans existed, the goddess of the moon created the first monster. The primeval wolf, the first beast, arose in her image. But the goddess was dissatisfied with her creation. It was wild, devastated nature and could not be tamed. So she created a second monster."
"The Lycan," Tommy said, smiling, and I nodded.
"He was equally immortal, but not immune to silver and vervain. He should hunt down the primeval wolf and protect the packs of this world. But the primeval wolf went into hiding and the Lycan wanted to go his own way and neglected the task. For this, the goddess cursed him and stole the wolf from him until he would fulfill his destiny."
"But he hasn't done that yet," said Tommy, hugging Frido to his chest.
"This legend is hundreds of years old," I replied, ruffling his auburn hair.
"So they're both still alive?"
"Anyway, they say they're immortal... but it's only their fairy tales that never end. And now it's time to sleep."
I kissed his forehead.
"Good morning Lizzy, I love you."
"Good night," I whispered. "I love you too."
