The Legendary Programming Mage Chapter 16

A soft breath escaped my lips the moment I stepped out of the bathroom. "I can’t get used to this body." My body was perfect, unrealistically so. In my past life, I had encountered many beauties, but all paled in comparison to my current appearance. Slicking my hair back so a few damp strands framed my face, I began scrolling through the tablet. There were countless messages from Quincy asking where I was. It was rather strange that she had waited so long for Allen. "Does she have a crush on me?" It was either that or she owed an immense debt she needed to repay. Either way, I was still planning to meet her. I didn’t need the mana stone anymore, but keeping that relationship would be useful. Besides, I wasn’t certain whether Allen had any family members. Tossing the tablet onto the bed, I dried my hair with the towel draped over my shoulder. "Get some revenge, meet Quincy, train a little, then register with the Hunter Association." My gaze shifted to the white shirt and trousers, now completely soaked. Even drenched, I had still worn them during the awakening. Being too eager to rush into things wasn’t always a good trait. However, my current problem was deciding what to wear. Allen only had two sets of clothes. There was no way someone owned only two outfits. I immediately moved toward the cupboard and began searching through it. From the large compartment where his clothes were stored to the smaller wardrobe. Just as I was about to leave, I noticed a small knob beneath the wardrobe. ’Could something actually be inside there?’ I moved closer and pulled on it, but nothing happened. After three tries with no success, I decided to flip the wardrobe over and the words I saw froze me. Beneath the wardrobe were lines carved by someone, and they read: [To the person who inhabits my body now, your finding this means you have successfully awakened, so thank you. I know you must be confused about many things, but don’t be. It wasn’t some grand god who sent you into this world, but me. From birth, I was weak and worthless and constantly bullied, that was why I needed revenge. It was either that or commit suicide. Since I was going to die either way, I decided to give my body’s successor the gift of this life. Please protect my family and friends too.] That word nearly slipped past my lips, but the shock left me speechless. It was written in English, unlike the strange language of this world that I somehow understood. My eyes quickly dropped to a cabinet beneath the wardrobe, where I spotted another knob. I pulled it open, and inside were a few clean clothes, an encyclopedia covering the terms of this world—spells, mana beasts, and more. And at the bottom lay two final items: a diary and an old black book. Opening the book, I couldn’t help but marvel at the contents. Quantum physics and various theories far beyond Earth. What truly caught my attention was what Allen Vanderbilt had written at the beginning: "I might not be a hunter, but I can hear voices. I can hear the monster." A sheen of cold sweat formed at my temples as I raked a hand through my hair. "What the hell did I even get into?" The book was a journal of revelations whispered to him by someone or something, which he expanded upon with his own knowledge. And at the end of the book, in messy handwriting I could barely grasp, was his final note: "I have found a way to reach the future and touch other universes. Now the monster and I can have our revenge." I swallowed hard, but the saliva refused to go down. No, that wasn’t the real question. Who the hell was Allen Vanderbilt? I exhaled heavily. ’Scientists are always crazy.’ There was no point trying to understand Allen Vanderbilt. If the truth wanted to come out, it would eventually. In fact, it was fortunate that I found this. At least I wouldn’t feel guilty about inhabiting another man’s body. Though I wasn’t planning on being his revenge puppet. Removing the clothes, encyclopedia, and diary, I left the strange book inside the compartment. It was too dangerous to take out. If anyone saw it, not only would they realize that I’m a reincarnator, but they might also assume that Allen Vanderbilt had dabbled in black magic. After setting the wardrobe back in place, I opened the diary. The first thing I noticed was how meticulously detailed the entries were. It was as if he was writing them for... someone. I placed a hand against my lips. Inside the diary were his habits, the things that could change and the things that couldn’t. His favorite food, the small comforts he couldn’t live without. His aunt, who had raised him throughout his childhood, and every detail about her. Quincy Blake, his childhood friend, and Naomi Blake, her older brother who had been like family to him. He had even listed people he admired, those close to him. The guy had never planned on living in the first place. He was exhausted by life and wanted to throw his burdens onto someone else. It wasn’t some profound mystery. This was just a man who had long since accepted his mediocrity and never tried to change. I let out a long breath and slipped the diary back into the wardrobe, covering it with some clothes. From the collection Allen Vanderbilt had left for me, I picked a white hoodie slightly oversized, though not by much. I paired it with joggers and canvas shoes. On the side table was a headset, which I connected to the tablet before slipping it on and leaving the room. ’Stupid news trying to ruin my mood.’ No matter what, I was still content. It was finally time for a face slap. The door shut with a faint click as the breeze brushed softly against my skin. ’Finally.’ ɴᴇᴡ ɴᴏᴠᴇʟ ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀs ᴀʀᴇ ᴘᴜʙʟɪsʜᴇᴅ ᴏɴ novel·fire·net
