The Broken Halo Chapter 49

"That’s enough." The voice that resounded in Simon’s cell was that of a female, and Pellin instantly turned with wide eyes. He immediately went on a knee and greeted. "Veilmaster." The Veilmaster was a fellow Velari, but she was not wearing a robe that covered her entire body. She wore tight-fitted black pants and a tucked in black shirt. On her face was a black-metal mask with a veil hanging beneath it, and at the top of the black metal mask were four red dots. The Velari who was referred to as Veilmaster stared at Simon through her mask, and despite Simon’s present condition, there was only pure indifference in her eyes. Though, there was a hint of respect and approval in her eyes. She shifted her gaze to Pellin, and disgust flashed in her eyes. "We’ve been watching him from the very beginning, and we believe you’ve done enough." Pellin shivered slightly at the cold voice of the Veilmaster, but he didn’t dare to raise his head. "If I’m given more time, I should be able to make him-" "There’s no need." The Veilmaster cut him off, and Pellin saw the flat shoes of the Veilmaster by his left. There was no sound as the Veilmaster walked, and Pellin didn’t perceive any sign of movement either from the wind or the Veilmaster’s demonic energy. Sweat appeared on Pellin’s forehead, and his heartbeat quickened in fear of being killed. The Veilmaster noticed this, but her gaze was utterly indifference. However, the disgust she had for Pellin deepened. "We believe that if he truly knew where the blood essence was, he would have said so by now... Especially after all you’ve done to him." "We’ve made our enquiries about him, and we know that he has not been trained in any way or form to withstand torture and to not reveal secrets even after being tortured." "He’s just a child... a truly unfortunate child." The Veilmaster shook her head, then she turned and walked to the door of the cell. "Bring him to the Hall of the Pallbearers. The Lords want to see him." Pellin trembled the more at the mention of the Lords, then he quickly bowed. "Yes, Veilmaster." He stood and was about to approach Simon, but the Veilmaster spoke. "No. Not you. Send somebody else to bring the child to the Hall. Somebody that’s... clean." Pellin looked down at himself, and when he saw the blood on his apron and body, he instantly understood. "Yes, Veilmaster." He bowed once again. "Oh, and don’t bother to dress his wounds or cover him up. It’ll be better if the Lords saw his present state for what it is." Pellin bowed once again. "Yes, Veilmaster." The Veilmaster was about to leave, but then Pellin quickly spoke. "But permit me to ask a question, Veilmaster." The Veilmaster paused and looked at Pellin from the corner of her eyes. "What is it?" She asked coldly and indifferently. Pellin attempted to put on a smile, but with his pig-like face, he just looked disgusting and horrifying to look at. "Do the Lords plan on killing him or recruiting him?" This was a question Pellin genuinely wanted to know, and for a genuinely good reason. The Veilmaster shifted her gaze to Simon, then back to Pellin. She instantly understood the true purpose of Pellin’s question, and she could no longer hide the disdain in her eyes when she looked at the pig. "The will of the Lords is know only to the Lords themselves and the Master. If they want to kill him, he would die. If they want to recruit him, he would be recruited." Pellin’s expression became grave, and he could not help but sweat in fear and anxiety the more. "But if they plan on recruiting him, then wouldn’t he desire revenge agaisnt me? I have tortured him greatly, and I doubt he won’t resent me for it even if it was just part of my job." The Veilmaster scoffed in disdain and disgust. "You’re more pathetic than I thought if you’re so worried about a child who has not even awakened his demon heart." Pellin was about to speak, but the Veilmaster walked out of the cell. "Enough of this pointless chatter. Do as I say and don’t keep the Lords waiting." The Pellin’s mouth opened and closed, but at the end of the day, he knew that asking any other question or saying something else might cause him to lose his life. "Yes, Veilmaster." The Veilmaster gave no response, and Pellin had no idea if she was still in the prison because he could not sense her in the slightest with his pathetic senses. He looked at Simon, and he could not help but frown deeply with a grave expression. The Veilmaster might have been right that he was pathetic for fearing a demon child who had not even awakened his demon heart or whose bloodline rank was not even known. However, Pellin had a feeling that Simon was not normal, and that if he was allowed to live, he would come for his life the moment he had the opportunity. And this feeling did not just come from anywhere, it came from the fact that despite everything he had done to Simon, the child had not even shown a single sign of fear and he was still alive. How could such a child not turn out to be a terrifying individual in the end? "I might have to take things into my own hands and call on some favours of those that owe me. I can’t let him live." Pellin’s eyes flashed with malice and killing intent. He brought out a white stone with chaos runes on it, and then he whispered into it. A few minutes later, the familiar demon dog who beat up Simon entered the cell. Pellin left the cell without saying a single word, but his expression was grave and solemn. Meanwhile, the demon dog shivered when he saw Simon’s condition, and he could not help but glance at Pellin with fear and disgust in his eyes. Despite his disgust, he dared not to say anything. He picked up Simon and carried him to the Hall of the Pallbearers.
