Jonah heard a soft, repeated beeping. It pulled him from his unconscious state.
His eyelids flipped open. The world was a blurry mess of white. White ceiling, white sheets, and the white uniform of a medic leaning over him, checking the readings on a monitor. The pain was gone, replaced by a deep, body aching tiredness.
"Well, look who decided to join us," the medic said, a cheerful tone in his voice that felt entirely out of place. "Gave us quite a scare, kid. That reaction of yours was… let's say over the top."
Jonah tried to speak, but only a dry croak came out.
"Easy there," the man said, offering him a glass of water. "You're at the Academy's primary infirmary. You've been out for a few hours." He gestured to another man standing near the foot of the bed – a junior instructor with a datapad, whose expression was far less cheerful and far more confused.
"We've never seen a reaction ", the instructor stated, his eyes fixed on Jonah's arm. "The energy surge from the Pillar was fifty times stronger than the normal Awakening. The alarms haven't blared like that in decades."
Jonah followed his gaze. The mark lay clearly on his skin, covering most of his forearm. The nine-headed golden beast. It was no longer blurry. It was a masterpiece of complex golden lines that seemed to shift and coil if he looked at them for too long. It pulsed with a faint inner light, a silent buzz of power that felt both alien and intimately a part of him.
He had never seen anything so beautiful or so terrifying in his life. Without thinking, he tried to cover it. He'd learned this habit from hiding valuables in the Undercroft
The instructor noticed the movement. "Don't bother hiding it. Everyone saw the light show." He tapped on his datapad. "The mark signifies your new class. The problem is, we have no idea what class it is."
He held up a small, handheld scanner and aimed it at Jonah's arm. A thin beam of blue light washed over the golden tattoo. The device whirred for a moment before letting out a sharp, negative beep.
The instructor sighed and showed Jonah the screen. In bold red letters, it read:
Error: Class Unidentified. Energy Signature Legendary.
"Legendary," the medic whistled, impressed. "Haven't seen that designation pop up in my twenty years here."
The instructor just looked annoyed. "Legendary usually means 'unstable' or 'dud.' A big flash with no substance." He looked at Jonah, his expression a mixture of curiosity and clear disbelief. "The pain you experienced isn't normal, either. Most Awakenings are painless. Yours was… violent. We're classifying it as a defective Awakening until we can determine otherwise."
The word hit Jonah like a physical blow. Down in the Undercroft, "defective" meant broken, useless, and destined for the scrap heap. He had gambled everything to escape that fate, only to have it follow him here.
A sharp voice cut through the tense silence. "All newly Awakened, on your feet! Assembly in five minutes!"
The instructor nodded curtly. "Get dressed. An officer will be here to issue your Ranks."
The medic helped Jonah sit up. The exhaustion was still there, but a surge of adrenaline pushed it back. Failure was not an option.

A few minutes later, Jonah stood in a line with about thirty other teenagers, all of them looking dazed and overwhelmed. They were the successful ones from today's ceremony, the cream of the crop.
He looked at their arms. He saw the simple flame marks of the Elementalists, the blade marks of the Manifestors. They were simple and most importantly, *known*.
His complex, nine-headed dragon felt like a brand, marking him as an outsider all over again.
A high ranking officer with a severe face and perfectly pressed uniform stood before them on a small platform.
"Congratulations," the officer began, his voice booming in the sterile hall. "You are the newest generation of Mystic Phoenix Academy. You are the one percent. You are the Awakened."
He paused for effect, letting the words sink in.
"Within these walls, your past life is irrelevant. Your wealth, your family, your origin – none of it matters. Here, you are judged by one thing and one thing only: power. Your journey begins now, at the bottom."
He gestured to a subordinate, who began handing out small, metallic badges.
"The Academy uses a simple ranking system. You will all start as Rank One, the newly Awakened." The officer held up a badge. It was a simple, unadorned pin. "As you grow, you will advance to Rank Two, Super Awakened, and eventually, the honored few will reach Rank Three, Ultra Awakened. Your rank dictates your resources, your authority, and your future. Earn it."
The subordinate reached Jonah and handed him his badge. But as he looked at the file on his datapad, he frowned. Jonah saw the large, red question mark next to his name.
Whispers started to ripple through the line of students.
"That's him. The one who made the alarms go off."
"I heard the Pillar almost shattered."
"An instructor told my cousin it was a half awakening. All flash, no real power."
Half-awakening. Defective.
Jonah tightened his fist. The whispers in this place weren't like the Undercroft's. Not the danger of a hidden knife, but the hurtful judgment of a high class world he didn't get.
He felt a deep sense of unease settle in his gut. Being different had always meant being a target. He had hoped that Awakening would change that. Instead, it seemed to have just painted a much bigger one on his back.
His survival instincts, honed over years of scavenging and hiding, screamed at him. He had to figure out what this power was. He had to control it. He had to prove he wasn't a failure, or this bright new world would chew him up and spit him out just as surely as the old one would have.
As the officer dismissed them to be escorted to their new dorms, Jonah kept his head down, the weight of the nine-headed beast on his arm feeling heavier than ever. It was a symbol of legendary power, but to him, right now, it felt like nothing more than a beautiful, golden cage.
