Seoul Object Story Chapter 65

Hiding on the rooftop of a nearby building, I looked down at the Ghostly Cat and saw that the Gyeyangsan temporary camp was in shambles. It was so sad to see the remnants of what must have been a fun party being scattered everywhere. They could’ve invited me too… I mean, I like parties too!! The overturned grill lay on the floor, spilling its delicious contents all over. Golden, well-cooked chicken skewers rolled around on the dirt, dripping all their slurp juicy goodness. In the vacant lot where the fun party was being held, almost zombie-like people were running around. They weren’t quite human or Object—just something in between. I spotted some familiar faces hiding near the wreckage of the party. Oooh~ The yellow detective was there, casually leaning against a brick wall with a gas lamp in hand. His junior stood beside him, gripping a huuuge hammer, and looking around all nervous. They both had a different vibe than before. Hmm, how do I describe it? It seemed as if they had turned into half-Objects? I mean, can someone who could send people flying like baseballs really be ordinary? I tried to watch the cat’s adventure thinking of it like I was watching a thriller flick, but then something assaulted my senses. Hmm, it was like a loud ‘Bang!’ sound that only I could hear? It felt like a creepy thing had just popped up somewhere in the corner of this camp. What’s more, it was just brimming with extreme malice towards humans. My eyes kept switching back and forth between the far corner of the camp and where the cat was. Hmm, I wanted to keep watching the kitty’s ‘Grand Adventure’… But the cat would probably be safe since the detective and his junior were both pretty capable. And hey, there’s always Watson! Leaving the detective group behind, I ran towards the source of the creepy feeling. I spotted some familiar letters through my monocle near the rooftop. But before I could even finish that thought, they disappeared. Hmm, the last I saw those letters was when I met the Gray Reaper. It must’ve been sneakily watching us before it darted off. The Gray Reaper, here huh? Shouldn’t it be at the Sehee Research Institute? Weird… I know the Gray Reaper gets a bad rep—always blamed for things it didn’t do, but… It’s hard not to be suspicious when it keeps popping up at crime scenes, you know? So why on earth did it show up here? Still, it would’ve been a lot easier to rescue Junior No. 2 with the Gray Reaper’s help, since it was pretty friendly towards humans… Well, now that that option was gone, things were going to be a bit more of a hassle. The three-story building where Junior No. 2 was holed up was tightly surrounded by the camp’s residents. The crowded welcoming party had really come back to bite us, huh? Even though the building was barricaded and the rooftop door locked, holding out wouldn’t be easy. Unlike the zombies seen in movies, these people weren’t your run-of-the-mill, brainless zombies. They were smart and had already tried various ways to get inside, like bringing a ladder or trying to climb the walls. And Junior No. 2 only had three bullets left. Great, just great! There’s no other answer, really… To get Junior No. 2 and our client out of there, we needed to lure the horde of residents away from the building. Fortunately, those zombies still shared some traits with their movie counterparts—whenever they spotted our group, they’d mindlessly instead of using their brains. If they didn’t have that habit, they’d move like a well-organized militia, and escaping would be a nightmare. We’d have been caught as soon as we set foot in the alley if that were the case. “Hoobae, come here,” I said, motioning Junior No. 1 over to brief her on the plan I had in mind. The plan was for Junior No. 1 to take Junior No. 2 and the client to a safe place while I acted as a decoy, luring all those zombies away from the building. The most crucial part of this operation was, surprisingly, the cat. I hoped the cat would guide them to a safe place. As I finished explaining the plan, the cat Object mewed, almost like it understood. Sunbae told me about his half-baked plan before suddenly bolting out into the clearing. Clapping loudly he got all the zombies’ attention. “Ladies and Gentlezombies~! Isn’t it late enough already? Let’s wrap up this welcome party, shall we?”
