I held in my tears until I made it to my civilian car and bawled my way home. Fine, I knew he would sweep this all under the rug, but now I had a grudge. I was going to track down the person who stole from me, even with my future career as a police officer captain at stake. If I could get my gun back, then I might be able to have this entire thing thrown out and my position reinstated. I just needed to figure out who the man was who switched places with the suspect was and I’d have a lead to follow.

I’ve seen far too many cases where a man overreaches and gets murdered in his sleep. I had to implicitly trust everyone I planned to make mine.
