Ji Yan closed his eyes. Over. It was all over. The Second Master was about to spill the truth about his marriage ah!
"Second Master," Ji Yan bent down towards Adrian at rocket speed with the phone in his hand and whispered something in his ear.
The family members, who were awaiting Adrian’s declaration were shell-shocked when the man no longer bothered to grace them with his presence.
Instead, he took the phone from Ji Yan’s hand and answered the call.
Visibly a little annoyed by the background noise, Adrian shot them a cold gaze.
The crowd went silent as they watched their Second Master walking away with the pets in his care.
"Secretary Ji, that..."
"What was the Second Master saying earlier?"
"What about his marriage?"
"Second Master is too busy to think about his marriage right now," Ji Yan answered with a straight face, "In the future, it is better not to bring up these matters."
"But the Old Lady..."
"The Old Lady respects the Second Master’s decisions."
Despite their thoughts and confusion regarding the matter, the members gradually dispersed.
Only when the people were gone did Ji Yan’s expressions change. He pulled out his handkerchief and dabbed it upon his sweaty forehead.
The entire King Family would erupt in chaos if they got to know that their heir was married to an ordinary girl!
"Hello... Hello? Why is it so noisy on your side?" Ella’s voice reverberated in the room the moment Adrian stepped inside and put her on speaker.
"Better now?" Adrian locked the door behind and glanced at his phone with a hint of displeasure.
"I can hear you now... oh, Riri and Lala are there too. Baby, are you in the Main Mansion right now?"
Adrian sat on the bed and glanced at his phone.
’’Oh... You are back... Does that mean your work is done? Do you finally get some rest now?"
As her cheery voice reverberated in his room, it seemed like someone had wrapped him in a cocoon of comfort. Adrian’s heart tingled and his fingers curled around the phone.
"You also need to eat properly..."
Ella continued talking about this and that, and then she summarized the whole event that took place in the university.
From the beginning to the end, Adrian listened to her quietly, with his eyes closed the way a child would hear his favorite lullaby.
Adrian’s eyes opened.
"When I said I want a gift from you, I did not mean it. But you still went ahead...’’
"It was far from a gift,’’ Adrian cut her off, his gaze lowering slightly.
"But if not for you, my answer sheets would have probably turned to ashes by now. I can deal with my problems on my own but thank you for lending a hand..."
As his long lashes cast faint shadows on his cheeks, a complicated, almost incomprehensible look flickered in his eyes.
For her, even the moon and stars at her feet wouldn’t suffice as a gift.
Yet, she was so easily content with things not worth mentioning.
"Did I offend him again?" After the call, Ella’s thoughts lingered on Adrian’s silent response to her appreciation for a moment.
Contrary to popular belief, Ella did not understand Adrian or his thought process all that well.
She merely relied on her instincts to get by most of the time.
The phone in her hand buzzed, snapping her out of her reverie.
When she checked the notification, it was an official notice from the university.
The re-test will be taking place tomorrow. The candidates for the re-test were Jasmine, who occupied the first place currently, Ella and Ruby, whose marks aroused suspicions.
And other than this, there was no additional information about the exams on the notice.
Ella took a shower and did her skincare quietly. While doing her skincare, she took notes of some of the ingredients in her little notepad carefully as she had been doing for quite some time now.
Just as she had gotten up from the chair, the sound of rapid knocks thundered Ella’s room.
When Ella opened the door, a force pushed her back.
Esther pounced on her as she sobbed, ’’Sis, sis, please let me sleep with you for the night...’’
Ella patted her back, "What happened? You don’t look so well."
"Violet’s father is sick so she left to take care of him. I am alone in my room..."
Ella sneered inwardly. Or more like you are worried that by some huge stroke of luck, I would really manage to study through the night and top the exams.
Ella feigned a little hesitation, "But Essie, I have to study...’’
"Sis, I keep having nightmares alone. Please don’t send me away. I beg you..." Esther clung to Ella.
Tucked in Ella’s watermelon printed blanket, Esther stretched, "Sis, can you turn off the lights?"
"Um... those lamps too... I can’t sleep with them..."
"Sis, why are you still sitting there on the chair?"
"Sis, please just come to bed. I can’t sleep alone."
Ella let out a soft sigh, "Alright."
When Ella walked over, Esther flashed the brightest smile and inched towards the wall, giving Ella some space on the side.
Ella turned off all the lights. Moonlight cascaded inside the room through the windows, dimly lighting it up.
As Ella laid on the outer side of the small bed, she spoke up, "This reminds me of the old days."
"Huh? Sis, what are you talking about?"
"When we finally got separate rooms in our early teenage years, I would go to your room because I was constantly afraid of this and that..." Ella’s voice came out slightly weary in the darkness, "And you would always let me sleep with you."
Esther’s closed eyes snapped open, "We were young and foolish, scared of wrong things."
Hearing no response from the girl, Esther tilted her head to the side. Her gaze landed on Ella’s face as she slept.
In the dim light, Esther noticed what she had overlooked before, Ella was changing.
