Alicia could feel somewhat relieved that she didn't have to worry about making an unwanted child in the future. She couldn't even begin to imagine if dozens of women demanded her responsibility by the front door.
She gradually calmed down as she was wrapped in a warm and dry blanket. However, there were no joys in the room.
The midwives believed that the Queen’s newborn baby was cursed by the humans.
“This must be the work of the Holy Church and their Gods!”
The other midwife was weeping, crying her eyes out. “Since the Hero was summoned from another world, the humans took our mountains and rivers, and now, they cursed our last hope.”
Amidst the nonsense mumblings of the illiterates, the queen remained calm, she gently put the crying baby on top of her chest.
With just a word from their queen, the midwives shut their mouths tightly.
Notwithstanding the heterogeneous state of her newborn baby, the queen’s motherly instinct told her that it wasn't a curse, but a blessing that would bring the Demon Race into a greater height.
The queen whispered in baby’s ears. “Listen close, my child. Your mind might not remember this, but my words shall etched in your soul, forever.”
Soon, the queen recites the spell which binds her words into the baby’s soul.
“Hark, ye silent void, and bear witness to mine blood. By the embers of thine oldest ruin, by the breath of flame that speaketh no more—I name thee Alice Nightflame, first of her name, one who shall walk the charred path between mercy and wrath, monarch of the Diablo. Last light beneath the blackened sky.”
For the first time in her life, she felt something that really belonged to her. A real name, given by a mother who gave birth to her new life. Alicia Quinn was just a stage name, one of many masks that she wore in her job as an adult entertainer. She never knew her birth name, let alone the names of her parents in her previous life as an orphan. And this very night, Alice Nightflame was born.
Alice looked at her mother, she was indeed a pure blood demon. Two pairs of horns protruded out from either side of her head. One pair was smaller, while the other pair curved upward elegantly.
She playfully pulled her mother’s red hair, and stopped crying when the queen finally breastfed her.
Her ghostly pale skin was as white as snow, Alice felt the deep bond almost immediately when the breast milk entered her gullet sip after sip.
“I am Aleena Nightflame, Queen of Diablo. Your mother. Though I doubt you’d remember this, your father, Aleister Nightflame, is the biggest jerk of demonkind. Stubborn fool who only cares about battling humanity. But, he did it for us so the Diablo could prosper and thrive.”
Alice giggled whilst sipping the warm breast milk. Aleena was no angel but in Alice’s eyes, her beauty surpassed any being.
‘Is this how it feels like to have a mother?’
As the warmth seeped into her body, the drowsiness gave her a sense of peace, her eyes slowly closed. However, before she could fall asleep in her mother’s arms, the door was banged aloud from the other side.
“Who?” Asked the queen.
“It’s me, Catharina, my queen. I have a message from His Majesty Aleister. He ordered me to deliver this to you directly the moment I arrived at the palace.”
“Plesse, come in.” Queen Aleena swung her fingers gracefully, and unlocked the door.
A demoness in a black and white maid uniform strode in, stream blood dripped down from her fingers while holding a necklace with a red crystal pendant on her operable hand.
The midwives gasped as soon as they saw the hideous wounds all over Catharina’s body. As the Head Maid of the Nightflame Family, Catharina was considered equal to the Ten Demons General if not stronger. Her duty was to protect the Nightflame Family and its heir at all cost. If Catharina was grievously wounded , they knew that they had lost the frontline against humans.
“Our forces have lost the battle,” Catharina said calmly, notwithstanding her wounds. “His Majesty Aleister and the Ten Demon Commanders were holding the Hero’s Party and the Holy Church’s Forces at the Bridge Of The Damned. He said; “Don't worry about us, and get to safety.”
Queen Aleena received the necklace from her, holding it tightly as she reminisced the memories from the distant past. She could feel Aleister’s life-force was already infused within, which also meant that he had given up himself and let the Warping Chaos take over his body to withhold the onslaught.
However, there were no tears on Aleena’s cheeks. She was prepared for this. Both Aleena and Aleister knew that the Hero’s Party and the Holy Church would launch the Holy Crusade when Aleena was in her weakest state once she gave birth to an heir.
“Oh no, we must evacuate immediately, your majesty!” Said one of the midwives. The others soon follow, cooing the queen to save their lives.
“To where, exactly?” Queen Aleena got on her feet, standing in front of Catharina while still cradling little Alice in her arms. “Humans resent us, demons, by how we look and how we do things. We are but a bunch of pests that need to be banished from this land in their eyes. We must fight! Die with honor, or die like an animal. Your choice.”
“Then, what should we do? The enemy's forces will arrive at the Pandemonium and storm the palace by tomorrow morning.”
“Lead the women and children away from the Diablo, go further into the Southern Lands.” said the queen decisively. “Go, now!”
The midwives trembled on their feet and soon scurried away to pass the queen’s mandate to high-ranking officials within the castle.
“Catharina…” The queen kissed her baby for one last time before handing it to the Head Maid. “Take care of her for me. I named her Alice Nightflame, our last hope.”
Knowing that she would be parted away from her mother forever, Alice cried as hard as she could until her whole body started shaking.
‘Hey! Could somebody tell me what's happening?!’ Alice wanted to scream her thoughts out loud if she could, but all they heard was inaudible scrqeaming and crying of a baby.
“Then how about you, my queen?” Catharina inquired with a complexed face.
“I will stop them… Diablo might be conquered, but humans shall never colonize our sacred land. Find the Succubus tribe at the Tusa Village deep within the Silverwood Forest.”
“As you command, my queen.”
Queen Aleena transferred a portion of her mana into Catharina, healing her in the process so she could carry the duty to keep the princess safe. Once she was done, the queen bequeathed the red crystal pendant and a storage ring which already filled with coins, books, and whatnot.
“I have prepared Alice’s necessities inside the ring. Use them wisely. Find Lady Andariel, she will recognize the pendant immediately once you show it to her.”
“Of course, your majesty. I will take care of Princess Alice as my own.”
“Good… Now, step aside… There’s a duty that I need to fulfill as the Demon Queen.”
