Pokémon:Trainer's Gambit Chapter 31

The Sevii Islands are an archipelago located to the south of Kanto. It is also the hometown of one of Kanto's Elite Four members, the Ice-type specialist Lorelei. Inside the Icefall Cave on Four Island, a Lapras let out a loud cry. A beam of icy-blue light shot horizontally across the roaring waterfall, freezing everything it touched into solid ice! Large chunks of ice fell with a clatter, and the frozen waterfall resumed its flow, echoing with a chilling sound. A tall, slender woman with red hair, wearing high heels, glossy black stockings, a black skirt that reached her hips, and a pair of frameless glasses, patted Lapras's hard shell and smiled. "Well done, Lapras!" "Lapras~!" Lapras affectionately nuzzled the woman's pale cheek. In the dimly lit cave, flickering with a faint icy glow, the woman's communicator lit up. A cheerful girl's voice came through the communicator: "Lorelei! Check out the video I just shared on YouTube!" "Oh, Misty," Lorelei said, crossing her arms and holding her phone with one hand, smiling. "Is it another drama you've been binge-watching lately?" "No, it's a tutorial video about the Perish Song Strategy!" Lorelei paused for a moment. "Perish Song Strategy?" "I was thinking the same thing! I thought it was just a gimmick, but it turns out there's some real substance to it!" Lorelei chuckled softly. "There can't be that much substance. I don't even dare use that strategy in the Master tier anymore." "It's not using Lapras as the core—it's Gengar!" Lorelei was taken aback. A Perish Song Strategy with Gengar? With Gengar's fragile build, could it really last until the opponent completely loses the will to fight? Curious, Lorelei returned Lapras to its Poké Ball and headed back to her residence on Four Island. Lorelei's room was surprisingly girly, with pink wallpaper, a fluffy carpet covered in plush toys and pillows, and posters of movie stars on the walls. Though her exterior was as cold as ice, Lorelei shared many common interests with girls Misty's age, from the shoujo manga they read to the idol dramas they followed. Turning on her computer, Lorelei clicked on the link Misty had sent her. "Natsume-sensei's Battle Tutorial 05: Perish Song Team." "A Trainer from the Touran Region?" Lorelei was surprised. In Lorelei's memory, Touran didn't have any Trainers famous for the Perish Song Strategy. But when she saw the two Pokémon battling, Lorelei's attention was immediately captivated. Gengar vs. Garchomp—both were common sights in the Master tier. The commands from both sides were highly skilled, befitting the Master tier's reputation. Lorelei even noticed something familiar in the way the Garchomp moved. Her pupils narrowed. "Cynthia?" As the battle progressed, Lorelei became more convinced of her guess. She had faced Cynthia several times in Master tier battles. The Champion's commanding style and battle tactics had left a deep impression on Lorelei. Her ferocity and precision were unlike anything Lorelei had seen from other female Trainers. This aggressive, wide-open style was something Lorelei had only ever seen from Cynthia's Garchomp! But what surprised Lorelei even more was yet to come. In the video, it was Gengar that was consistently suppressing Garchomp's rhythm! Lorelei couldn't help but focus on the Trainer from the Touran Region. Who on earth was this person, able to hold their own against Cynthia? After a moment of contemplation, Lorelei adjusted her glasses and murmured, "So that's how it is..." By sacrificing offensive power and using Perish Song in the first round, the strategy forced the opponent to launch an all-out attack. Using Protect to stall, any mistake in the opponent's commands would allow Perish Song to play a decisive role. This meant that the key to victory wasn't on the battlefield itself, but in the mind games outside of it. If the opponent hadn't been Champion Cynthia, they likely would have lost their composure and made a critical mistake. A slight smile crept onto Lorelei's lips. "What an interesting Trainer." Although Cynthia didn't make any mistakes, the limitations of the game mechanics prevented her from showcasing her full strength. In the video, Cynthia tried to recall Garchomp, but Gengar's Mean Look kept it locked in place. Only then did the "Shadow Tag + Perish Song" strategy come to an end. While Lorelei was a bit disappointed that there wasn't a practical battle demonstration, she could still glean some insights from this match. "This could work in practical battles, but the conditions are too strict," Lorelei said, stretching lazily before resting her head on the computer desk. "Probably some big shot came up with this strategy out of boredom." "Still... this strategy is pretty dirty!" The video had received high praise on YouTube. However, due to the specific Pokémon required, many Trainers couldn't replicate the strategy. They could only seek advice from other Ghost-type experts. Lorelei gave the video a like and curiously browsed through the comments section. "This is Natsume-sensei's third strategy tutorial!" "Why are they all in-game battles? When will Natsume-sensei do a practical battle?" "Practical battles involve Trainer privacy, so a lot of footage can't be released." "@Morty the Clairvoyant, please give us a detailed breakdown, big shot!" Morty, the Ghost-type Leader of Ecruteak City in the Johto Region, was also a staunch supporter of the Perish Song Strategy. Lorelei had met him once, but the Perish Song Strategy wasn't her specialty. What Lorelei prided herself on was her mastery of the Ice-type. [Morty the Clairvoyant: A high-quality tutorial. To make it more accessible, the creator chose to use an in-game battle with commentary. I've optimized this strategy for double battles by using a "Gengar + Gothitelle" combo. Those interested can come watch this year's Type Expert Tournament.] "Do all Ghost-type users have such dirty tactics?" "Wait, isn't Natsume-sensei a Grass-type and Poison-type expert? How did they become a Ghost-type specialist?!" "A Master of All Types?! I'm impressed!" Lorelei couldn't help but laugh, but she was also intrigued by this "Natsume-sensei." Though the strategy seemed a bit gimmicky, the fact that this Trainer could go toe-to-toe with Cynthia was beyond Lorelei's expectations. Clicking on Natsume-sensei's profile, Lorelei found clear instructions on how to join chat groups for followers from different regions. Without hesitation, Lorelei joined the chat group using her main account, which immediately caused the group to fall silent. "No way, an Elite Four member is following Natsume-sensei?" "Kanto's Ice-type Elite Four? Too fake!" Lorelei blinked, adjusting her glasses. [Admin "The Battler" has invited you to join the "Master Trainer Chat Group."] "Red?" Lorelei chuckled. "He's everywhere, isn't he?"
