Pokemon: The Gameboy Effect Chapter 70

Charizard soared high into the sky, his massive wings beating fiercely, creating a powerful gust that sent ripples across the battlefield. The moment he appeared, the temperature of the entire arena seemed to shift, rising several degrees. His flames glowed brightly against the backdrop of the open sky, his form an embodiment of raw power and untamed force. To Zane, Charizard wasn't just a Pokemon; he was a symbol of his strength, his most trusted partner in battle. The fiery dragon had helped Zane earn his reputation as the strongest in the Battle Department , a title he had fiercely held for years. For many in the battle department, Zane and Charizard were inseparable. "Unless you can beat Charizard, you can't claim victory over Zane!" whispered several seniors as they watched the spectacle unfold. The seniors in the department exchanged excited murmurs at the sight of Charizard. Some hadn't seen him in action for a while. "I haven't seen Charizard in ages!" one senior remarked, his eyes gleaming with nostalgia. "Yeah, it's been a while. Unless it's against a senior, Zane rarely uses Charizard in any other battles," another added. A few from the Breeding Department looked puzzled. "RiverstoneUniversity specializes in water-types, right? Why is he using a fire-type?" one asked, a hint of skepticism in his voice. But it was clear to everyone watching that Zane had summoned Charizard with a single purpose in mind. After losing the first round, he was not just fighting for the win; he was fighting to regain his honor. Losing here would damage his standing, both in the eyes of his freshman opponent and the senior class. Zane wasn't about to let that happen. "It's time," John said calmly, his expression unchanged. He recalled Hariyama, knowing full well that the slow-moving powerhouse stood little chance against Charizard's speed and aerial dominance. John threw another Pokeball, releasing Frogadier onto the field. The water-type landed gracefully, its sleek blue form a sharp contrast against Charizard's fiery presence. At level 33, Frogadier was close to evolving, and its speed and precision made it John's strongest Pokemon. It was a calculated counter to Charizard's fire-type offense, a perfect match-up on paper. "Smart move from John," a spectator murmured, impressed. "I thought he might use Combusken, but Frogadier's water type gives him a real advantage here." Grace, Rose, and Ethan were the only ones who had seen John's Frogadier fight before, and they remembered it well. Grace in particular recalled how quick and strategic it had been in their last encounter, a battle that had left an unforgettable impression on all who witnessed it. "Charizard, Flamethrower!" Zane shouted, not waiting for the referee's signal. Charizard dove from the sky, unleashing a torrent of crimson flames, aiming to turn Frogadier into a crispy snack. His flames lit up the sky like a flare, leaving trails of red in their wake. "Evade, then use Water Pulse!" John responded instantly. Frogadier reacted with lightning speed. It twisted its body mid-air, propelled by powerful hind legs, and nimbly dodged the Flamethrower. With a smooth landing, Frogadier took a deep breath and released three streams of water, aiming straight for Charizard's head. Charizard flapped his wings, expertly twisting in the air to avoid the attack. As the water passed harmlessly beneath him, Charizard locked eyes with Frogadier. With a fierce screech, he dove toward Frogadier, his claws glowing green as he readied his Dragon Claw. Charizard didn't need Zane's command to know what to do. The pair had fought together countless times, their coordination seamless. The dragon's instinct took over, and he shot toward Frogadier with deadly intent. John had anticipated Charizard's swift response. "Double Team!" he called out. In a flash, Frogadier crossed its arms and multiplied, creating four clones of itself, all positioned in different parts of the battlefield. The clones blurred together, their movements synchronized, making it nearly impossible for Charizard to discern which was the real Frogadier. Charizard struck out at the nearest clone, his claws raking through the air, but it evaporated into a puff of white smoke. He quickly turned, only to strike another clone, and then another. Charizard growled in frustration, his eyes darting between the decoys. John grinned, seizing the opportunity. "Water Gun, now!" Charizard turned just in time to see a stream of water shoot out from behind one of the clones, hitting him square in the back. But Zane was quick to respond. "Aerial Ace!" Zane shouted. Charizard snapped his wings and performed a rapid flip mid-air, closing the distance between him and the real Frogadier at a blinding speed. He was coming in fast, and Frogadier barely had time to react. John's heart raced as Charizard closed in on Frogadier. He knew Charizard's aerial skill was nearly unmatched. "Smoke Screen!" he called out. Frogadier dropped a black smoke bomb, engulfing the entire battlefield in thick, swirling fog. Charizard charged forward, his wings flapping with great force, but the smoke was too dense. He had no idea where Frogadier was. "Use Gust!" Zane commanded. Charizard flapped his wings again, creating a powerful gust that blew the smoke away. As the fog lifted, Charizard expected to find Frogadier, but instead, he was met with an unexpected sight. Frogadier stood at the edge of the battlefield, holding something shiny—a golden Sharp Beak. Zane's eyes widened with realization. Frogadier had used the move Thief to snatch the item while Charizard was distracted by the smoke. "Throw it!" John ordered. Frogadier hurled the Sharp Beak at Charizard with pinpoint accuracy. The golden object cut through the air like a streak of lightning, and Charizard attempted to dodge, but it was too late. The Sharp Beak struck him square in the chest, knocking the wind out of him and sending him tumbling from the sky. "Frogadier, Cut!" John called. Two of Frogadier's clones dashed forward, each wielding a kunai. They moved like blue streaks of lightning, closing in on the downed Charizard with blinding speed. "Flamethrower!" Zane barked. Charizard, still reeling from the impact, inhaled deeply and unleashed a massive wave of fire. But Frogadier was too quick. Both clones used Quick Attack, darting out of the way just in time to avoid the flames. "Dragon Claw!" Zane shouted, desperation in his voice. "Take out the one who threw the item!" Charizard's claws glowed dark green as he lunged toward the Frogadier that had used Fling. With deadly precision, he swiped at the little Pokemon, aiming to crush it. But just as Charizard's claws were about to make contact, something went horribly wrong. Charizard's claws sank into the air, but there was no resistance—something was amiss. A sharp pain suddenly ripped through Charizard's chest as the kunai from the other Frogadier found its mark, the blade cutting deep into his scales. Charizard's eyes widened in shock as the realization hit: he had been outmaneuvered. The battle had taken an unexpected turn.
