Pokemon: The Gameboy Effect Chapter 28

"Kirlia?" Brawly frowned as he recognized his opponent's Pokemon. As a Fighting Gym Leader, Brawly's team was packed with Fighting-types—strong, sure, but they had a notable weakness to three key types: Flying, Psychic, and Fairy. And Kirlia, with her dual Fairy and Psychic typing, was a nightmare matchup for him. In this battle, Fighting-type moves would only deal a quarter of their usual damage to Kirlia. Essentially, she was a natural counter to Fighting Pokemon. But Brawly had picked Meditite, which helped level the playing field a little. The battle was shaping up to be a psychic showdown. "Are you scared?" John teased, leaning into the mental game. "Scared?" Brawly let out a laugh, clearly amused by what he considered a bad joke. "Every challenger knows I'm a Fighting Gym Leader, and many have tried using the same Pokemon as you. But how many have actually walked away with the Dewford Badge?" Brawly smirked. "Actually, it's you who should be worried. After our last battle, you trained up a Kirlia specifically to counter me. So, tell me, are you scared?" The two trainers hadn't even started the battle yet, but they were already locked in a verbal sparring match, each trying to get inside the other's head. The real power dynamics would soon reveal themselves on the battlefield. Meditite and Kirlia were also fully focused on each other, the tension mounting as they prepared to clash. The referee stepped in, signaling the start. "The battle begins now!" "Meditite, use Confusion!" John called out. "Kirlia, Confusion!" John shouted almost simultaneously. Both Pokémon unleashed their psychic power in a crackling wave that filled the air. For a moment, the two Confusion attacks collided in mid-air, a stunning spectacle of psychic energy. But it only lasted a heartbeat before Kirlia's Confusion overwhelmed Meditite, sending it soaring into the air. Once. Twice. Three times! The battle's outcome was almost too quick to follow. Meditite slammed into the ground with a force that rattled the dojo. "Meditite is unable to battle. Kirlia wins!" the referee declared. "Kirlia!" Kirlia floated gracefully down, her skirt twirling in the air as she cast a cold, victorious glance at the fallen Meditite. 'You really think you can challenge me with Confusion? You're not even close to my level of expertise!' Kirlia seemed to say, her tone dripping with disdain. John chuckled, impressed. "Looks like she's living up to her title of queen." Despite her delicate appearance, Kirlia exuded an air of authority. "Lia~" Kirlia responded, a playful glint in her eyes as she gave an elegant curtsy, like a ballerina taking center stage. Brawly wasn't amused. "It's not over yet!" he snapped, clearly irritated by Kirlia's theatrics. He threw his next Pokeball with determination. A flash of silver light illuminated the battlefield as a muscular Machoke appeared, its imposing figure flexing with pride. "Macho!!!" Machoke bellowed, muscles rippling as it struck a series of proud poses. Brawly's Machoke was impressive, no doubt. It had an almost perfect form, a testament to Brawly's training. This wasn't just any Breeder's Machoke. This was a powerhouse that could take down just about anything—except, it seemed, for Kirlia. John couldn't help but smile. This battle was turning out to be a showcase for Kirlia's true strength. "Machoke, use Bulk Up!" Brawly commanded. Machoke flexed, turning its back to the crowd and showing off its muscles in a dramatic, almost theatrical display of strength. But John wasn't fooled—this was no vanity routine. Bulk Up would raise Machoke's attack and defense. "Pointless theatrics," John muttered under his breath. He knew Brawly was trying to bolster Machoke's defenses to withstand Kirlia's powerful Confusion, but it wasn't going to work. Kirlia, with her innate battle genius, didn't need brute strength. She was a prodigy, able to turn even the most imposing opponents into mere playthings. "Kirlia, use Encore! And right after, Confusion!" John commanded with a grin. Kirlia, ever mischievous, turned toward her opponent, her face cold and resolute. With a quick flick of her hand, she trapped Machoke in an Encore, forcing it to repeat its earlier Bulk Up move. In an instant, Confusion erupted once more, lifting her into the air as her white skirt billowed around her like a cloud. With a flick of her wrist, she hurled Machoke through the air, just as easily as she had with Meditite. The ground trembled with the impact as Machoke crashed back down to earth. Kirlia's icy contempt for her opponent was unmistakable as she delivered the finishing blow with renewed vigor. "Macho~~" Machoke let out a defeated cry, unable to do anything but writhe in confusion, the apprentices watching in awe. To face a Psychic-type, one had to at least withstand its attacks. If you couldn't handle Confusion, you had no business battling it. The cycle continued. After another crushing slam, Machoke's eyes rolled back in its head, spiraling with confusion. Despite its strength, Machoke—being a pure Fighting-type—was doubly vulnerable to Psychic moves. It was no surprise that it couldn't withstand the barrage from Kirlia. "Machoke is unable to battle. Kirlia wins!" the referee quickly announced. The first two battles had been swift, decisive victories for John. Now, Brawly was down to his final Pokemon—the one he hoped could turn the tide. With a determined look, Brawly threw his last Pokeball into the air. "Let's go!" he called. The ball opened with a flash, and the dojo seemed to darken as a massive figure appeared, casting a heavy shadow over the battlefield. The ground shook as the towering figure of a Hariyama materialized, its thick, muscular frame radiating raw power. Hariyama: Brawly's ace, also named King. The heavyweight champion of his team. And, as John remembered with a smirk, the evolved form of his own Makuhita. This battle was far from over.
