"Thanks for your hard work." Gym Leader Hank recalled the swiftly defeated Poliwrath with his Pokeball.
In one fluid motion, he unclipped another sphere from his belt and released it, barking out a command simultaneously. "Thunder!"
The Pokemon that materialized was Raichu, but not your everyday variety. This was an Alolan Raichu, with darker skin, elegantly curled ears, and a long, slender tail that doubled as a natural surfboard. Unlike its Kantonian counterpart, this Raichu boasted a unique Electric/Psychic typing and the special ability Surge Surfer.
Surge Surfer: When the battlefield is under Electric Terrain conditions, the Pokemon's speed doubles.
Before John could even process what was happening, his shiny Gyarados soaring majestically in the sky took a direct hit from the devastating Thunder.
The magnificent beast plummeted like a shot-down aircraft, its enormous body hurtling toward the ground. Reporters scattered in panic, though not before capturing a few dramatic close-ups of the red Gyarados's final moments of consciousness.
"BOOM..." The ground shook with earthquake-like force as Gyarados crashed.
A fast-swimming frog like Greninja couldn't withstand a Thunder that dealt double damage, let alone a flying water-type facing quadruple damage from the electric assault.
"Gyarados is unable to battle! Raichu wins!" the referee announced, his voice carrying across the now-silent stadium.
John stood dumbfounded, reality slowly sinking in.
I never expected to be beaten by my own tactics, he thought grimly.
There was no denying it, his Gyarados flying high above had made itself a perfect target. The rain only worsened matters, but even in clear weather, soaring at such altitude was practically begging to be struck by lightning. Dodging would have been impossible.
Flying-type Pokemon feared electric-types for a reason!
'This is definitely my oversight. I should have anticipated this move.'
The advantage John had carefully built had been obliterated in a single strike.
With no other choice, John's hand moved toward the Pokeballs at his waist. His fingers brushed against the second one, then suddenly froze mid-motion.
A thought struck him, and he looked up to meet Hank's gaze.
Gym Leader Hank was already watching him, their eyes locking in silent communication.
In that moment of connection, John's arm snapped forward, hurling a Pokeball straight at Raichu.
"Dragon Rush!" John shouted.
The Pokeball burst open mid-flight, releasing Garchomp,the land shark Pokemon spiraled downward through the air, diving with unstoppable momentum!
John was attempting to catch the seasoned trainer off-guard with a surprise attack!
This maneuver was the epitome of learning on the fly, using your opponent's own tactics against them in real-time.
Hank merely chuckled at the attempt. "Volt Switch!"
The moment their eyes had met, John's intentions had become transparent to the veteran trainer. This was the battle wisdom that only came from years of experience.
"Trying to surprise me? Kid, you need more seasoning!" Hank crossed his arms with a triumphant smile.
Electricity crackled across Raichu's entire body, violent thunderbolts erupting outward, bombarding the approaching Garchomp.
Such an attack would normally mean nothing to Garchomp, its Ground-type nature rendered it completely immune to Electric-type moves.
But Volt Switch wasn't primarily an attack, it was an escape strategy.
As Garchomp's attack was about to connect, Raichu transformed into lightning, attempting to evade.
The twist? Garchomp didn't slam all its draconic energy into the ground as expected. Instead, it executed a backhand swipe before landing, unleashing a black crescent energy wave that pursued the lightning-form Raichu.
The Pokeball on Gym Leader Hank's waist , Raichu's intended destination, was struck by the energy wave, knocking it away. Raichu, mid-escape, materialized and collapsed, unable to continue battling.
Gym Leader Hank froze in shock. The reporters surrounding the battlefield were equally stunned.
The trainers in the audience, however, quickly pieced together what had happened.
John had called out "Dragon Rush," but Garchomp had actually used the Dark-type move Pursuit, a technique specifically designed to chase Pokemon attempting to switch out!
When successful, Pursuit's power doubled on retreating targets!
To make matters worse for Raichu, its Alolan form included a Psychic typing, making it doubly vulnerable to Dark-type attacks. The damage multiplier had stacked to quadruple!
With damage that severe, Raichu had no chance of surviving.
John was confident that even a regular Raichu would have been knocked out by his Garchomp's Pursuit with doubled power, but the type advantage had made victory certain.
As for how Garchomp knew Pursuit? That was thanks to lessons learned from training with Greninja.
But none of that was what truly impressed the crowd.
The reporters were buzzing with one burning question: How had John predicted that Gym Leader Hank would use Volt Switch? Raichu had just made a spectacular entrance by instantly knocking out Gyarados, seemingly establishing battlefield control.
The answer to this mystery was known only to the two trainers facing each other across the battlefield.
"You've got some acting chops, kid!" Gym Leader Hank's eyes gleamed with excitement, looking at John as if discovering a rare treasure. His fighting spirit was visibly ignited!
"And you're like old ginger, Gym Leader Hank, spicier with age!" John grinned. The comment seemed odd, but was loaded with respectful sarcasm.
Their recent exchange had been a high-level tactical mind game between two chess masters.
When John had paused while touching his Pokeball and met his opponent's eyes, it wasn't hesitation, it was calculation.
Hank had read John's tactical intentions from this subtle gesture, which was why he commanded Raichu to use Volt Switch.
In reality, John's pause was a deliberately crafted performance, a bit of "acting" designed to make the poser trainer believe he had deciphered John's superficial plan of a surprise attack.
John had studied Hank's previous battles extensively. He knew the Gym Leader wasn't someone who played conservatively. On the contrary, Hank had a keen tactical eye and seized every opportunity to gain advantage.
When facing a trainer telegraphing a surprise attack, there were only three logical responses:
A solid defensive stance. A reckless counter-attack without knowing what Pokemon was coming. Or a damage-dealing switch move to simultaneously retreat and bring in a Pokemon that countered the incoming threat.
The third option was clearly the smartest. Based on Hank's character, John was certain he would choose it.
That's why John had prepared his fake "Dragon Rush" command while Garchomp was actually primed to use "Pursuit" to defeat Raichu.
The crucial element? John's understanding that Hank would read his intentions.
This was why John had called Gym Leader Hank "old ginger"experienced trainers could predict their opponent's strategy from subtle cues.
John had used this predictability to set a trap.
Even if Hank hadn't seen through John's intentions and hadn't commanded Volt Switch, once Garchomp closed the distance, Raichu would have been finished regardless.
In essence, this was a battle of layers upon layers of strategy.
Hank thought he was on the second floor of tactical thinking, believing John was on the first floor, but in reality, John had been operating from the fifth floor all along.
