Early the next morning, John found himself on the shimmering waters of Alto Mare, preparing to tackle a new challenge: mastering the art of steering a racing boat. Under the guidance of a seasoned local instructor, he quickly realized the complexity of this unique sport.
After just a couple of minutes on the boat, John felt a surge of determination. "One day," he thought, gripping the handle tightly, "I'll win the Masters tournament."
Unlike traditional water races, Alto Mare's competitions weren't just about the Pokemon's skills—they tested the trainer's limits as well. The trainer stood firmly on the racing boat, their feet locked in place, acting as the crucial connection point between themselves and the Pokemon pulling them. Maintaining balance required immense strength, and losing focus could mean being dragged headfirst into the water.
John experienced this firsthand with Greninja. The moment his partner leapt forward, its power unleashed with an explosive burst. Before John could adjust, he was yanked off balance, crashing into the water along with the boat.
Drenched and laughing nervously, he realized this was just the beginning. Both he and Greninja were rookies at this, and their lack of coordination was evident. On their second attempt, Greninja eased into motion, slowly accelerating to give John a chance to adapt. Still, with the boat skimming over the surface, resistance grew, testing John's core strength to its limits. Thankfully, his rigorous physical training paid off, and he managed to stay upright—barely.
The real challenge came with learning how to turn. The instructor led John out to the open sea, far from the city's bustling waterways. It was a wise decision, as John spent the next hour being flung off the boat with almost comical frequency. Each time Greninja turned sharply, inertia sent John tumbling through the air, his arms flailing before he splashed unceremoniously into the ocean.
"Thirty times," John muttered, dragging himself back onto the boat. "That's how many times I've kissed the water today." He wiped saltwater from his face, shaking his head with a wry grin. "At least no one's here to see me make a fool of myself."
Despite the setbacks, John remained optimistic. He was beginning to grasp the basics, and he could feel a growing connection with Greninja. As soon as the device powered up, its indicator lit up with an intensity he hadn't seen before, pointing resolutely to the east. His pulse quickened. "A legendary item?" he whispered, his imagination racing.
John sprang to his feet, leaving his half-finished tea behind as he followed the signal. After a few minutes of winding through the narrow streets, he realized navigating Alto Mare's maze-like alleys would be faster with help. He summoned Gardevoir with a flick of his Pokeball.
"Teleport!" he commanded.
In a flash, they reappeared near the signal's source: an unassuming alleyway ending at a blank stone wall. John frowned, puzzled. The Dowsing Machine's light pulsed stronger here than ever, yet nothing about the wall seemed extraordinary.
Tentatively, he reached out. His hand passed through the stone as if it were an illusion. Heart pounding, John stepped forward, and the world around him shifted.
On the other side, a breathtaking garden sanctuary awaited. Towering trees swayed gently in the breeze, their leaves forming a natural canopy. Clear pools of water sparkled in the sunlight, home to playful Poliwag and Wooper. Butterfree and Yanma fluttered above vibrant flowerbeds, tending to the blossoms with care.
"The Secret Garden," John breathed, recognizing the place from an old legend. It was said to be the heart of Alto Mare, guarded by the legendary Pokemon Latios and Latias. At its core lay the Soul Dew—a gem imbued with Latios's very soul, serving as the energy source for the entire city.
Following the Dowsing Machine's guidance, John descended a long stone staircase toward the garden's center. However, as he approached, a sudden Air Cutter sliced through the air, carving a sharp line across the ground in front of him. He froze.
Scanning the area, John saw no sign of his attacker, but he knew better than to let his guard down. Both Latios and Latias were known to turn invisible, and it seemed this was their way of issuing a warning. He took a step back, raising his hands in a gesture of peace.
"I get it," he murmured. "No need to push my luck."
Respectfully, John retreated, his mind buzzing with possibilities. He hadn't even caught a glimpse of the legendary Pokemon, but the encounter left him exhilarated. If he wanted to form a bond with Latios or Latias, he'd first need to prove himself—and figure out their level of power.
